She is, however, lacking on the thorough analysis of issues, and not great at all on the pediatric end of things -that being said, she does not advertise as such. Sadly, my family has noticed massive differences in treatment based on the quality of our insurance (better and more thorough when the insurance is good, less attentive when you self-pay). This was underlined by 3 things, 1) Dr Manus' patronizing comments during consultation. 2) her office literally forgetting about any kind of checkups/follow ups for you or the kids when your insurance is "not good" but doing it when it is. 3) An effort to collect fees for things nobody does. Unfortunately I have observed this enough that I don't believe it's a random event. I am sure some of these shortcomings are a result of the economic pressures this doctor's office is under. Unfortunately I am in no position to properly control the "quality" of my insurance, and yes, I understand doctors have bills to pay.

Dr. Manus is patient and will listen to every concern you have no matter how small, and she is extremely knowledgable. I like that she doesn't over-prescribe medication, and always lets me know about different courses of treatment. She is sensitive and kind and just a wonderful person. My mother and brother have also been patients of hers and were similarly pleased. I cannot recommend her enough. The reception staff is efficient and if I have a health concern and am unsure of whether to get an appointment a nurse will always call me back that day and normally within an hour or two. They also will not hesitate to tell me if I don't need an appointment, which is great because it saves me the hassle and $ of having to come in. I have never had a billing or insurance issue and despite having changed insurances several times every PPO I have ever had has been in network. Note that this office does not accept HMOs, however. Sometimes there is a bit of a wait between the time when you see the nurse and when the doctor comes to the room. But usually this is not the case. In 13 years of visits (about 3 times/yearly) I only recall them running very behind on a handful of occasions. Overall the wait time has been consistently reasonable, and I am usually in and out of there in under 45 minutes. Parking is somewhat inconvenient as it is everywhere in downtown Oak Park, but there is a village parking structure nearby that is free for the first two hours on week days.

Despite me having a very strong family history of endometriosis and having many of the symptoms, Doctor Blumenthal told me that it would have to remain a "question" as to whether or not I had endometriosis. Doctor Blumenthal refused to run any of the tests that my mom or I asked for. I did not feel that Doctor Blumenthal listened to me. When I told her I was in pain she said that was "normal." Not sure if she did not respect or listen to me because I am young or what the issue was. Regardless, I left her office crying and without answers. This experience made me very nervous to go to other doctors for fear that I would be treated the same way. No doctor should ever make anyone feel like this, I recommend that you go to another doctor.

I was having really difficult OBGYN issues and needed help (fast) Like any MD, first time time patients have to wait to see them. It took a month to get in. But a personal referral is worth the wait and so I did. Was I ever surprised by her bedside manner! I have always sought out female docs for my OB needs as I think they will be more inclined to be comforting, caring and respectful. They have the same anatomy. They have to go through the same exams. At 37 I've had many OB's. Never in my life have I been treated more like a piece of meat than I was by Dr. Blumenthal. She is short, to the point and abrasive. Every time I had a question she cut me off. Instead she informed me of her "plan". I would have an internal ultrasound to further investigate the source of excruciating pain in my pelvis. Her diagnoses was that I had a fibroid near one ovary and a cyst near the other. She would give me birth control and by eliminating the periods it would solve my problem. Case closed. Next. Her answer to my plea for pain relief was Ibuprofen (as if I hadn't tried that and every other OTC on the market- non of which helped). I tried to explain this was affecting my life, my job, my marriage. If I could fix it with an OTC why was I seeking professional help????? The day of the ultrasound she went through the procedure calmly but speaking to the tech and not me. I was in pain and she utterly disregarded it. My husband was with me, holding my hand, coaching me to breathe and squeeze him if it hurt. What a good man. When she was done with me she told me to dress and left the room. She didn't however warn or offer me something to catch all the fluid that was about to gush out of me when I was upright. Such a small and common sense thing. But when (the patient) is in pain and worried - they might not be thinking of these things and the doctor knows full well what will happen when you get up. NOT telling me, seemed almost crude. After several months of following her strict instructions and taking her birth control pills, I was bleeding daily instead of once or twice monthly. The pain was increasing and now on top of it I was always bleeding. You can imagine what this does to intimacy (not to mention being on birth control being non conducive to the baby making we told her we wanted to start this year). But NOOOOO - we had to listen and follow the plan. My husband accompanied me to every test and visit, and she talked down to him as if she hated men or something. I tried to nicely explain to her OUR plans and wants. Instead she challenged me and said, "do you want to get better or not?" Very Alpha female, VERY. She then decided I needed an endoscopy. She would put me under for in- house surgery (looking for signs of scar tissue around the uterus that she thought was the problem). I agreed to the surgery and even made myself available the very next day (since it was her "surgery" day and it was "best" for her). What a waste and detriment to my overall health. She found nothing. When I came out of the anesthesia I was totally disoriented. The pain was excruciating. I began to howl in pain as I was waking up and her team actually had the nerve to start yelling at me "SHUT UP, SHUT UP". Then they slammed the door closed on me, leaving me alone, writhing in pain with my knees up to my chin and didn't come back for at almost 5 minutes with something for the pain. I felt like they were punishing me for making noise. Dr. Blumenthal didn't bother to talk to me post op- instead she talked (down) to my husband in a very rude and dismissive way. She told him that she didn't see anything and gave him a name and # for another "specialist". Basically passing the buck. THANK GOD. My new doctor (Dr. Tu) is a great listener and very forward thinking. He's great to my husband and leaving no stone unturned as we work together to figure out what the problem is. (I will be writing a glowing review on him next). But as for Dr. Jane Blumenthal at Northwestern University Hospital I couldn't be more disgusted. FAIL. FAIL. FAIL. Ladies (especially those getting up near 40 that want to start a family) avoid this doctor like the plague. Her bedside is atrocious, she has NO compassion, no listening skills, and I question why she's even in medicine. There are docs out there that are apathetic. They're tired of the system and I know the system is flawed. But there are also doctors out there that CARE about their patients and work diligently and compassionately to provide health care (even in a flawed system). Pass on this doctor. She is past her prime (if she ever had one). Oh and I just found out she is no longer doing deliveries. So it's impractical to go to her if you want a family anyhow.

I explained that I completed all of the paperwork online and was told that the doctor still won't see me and need to reschedule, which I did. I was told that I don't have to come earlier because all of my insurance information has been submitted online. When I arrived for my rescheduled appointment 10 mins before the appointment time I got a phone call (as I was walking into the building) that my appointment is canceled because I didn't check in 30 mins ahead of time. They were very rude and completely disregarded the information that the same staff told me just a week ago. Very unusual and unprofessional.

For the most part, I felt Dr. Shirley was patient and willing to answer questions without rushing or interrupting you. I was pretty satisfied with the whole experience, and only withhold a fifth star because of the price. I have not been to the doctor in a looong time, and am only going now because my current employer has a health reimbursement account for me. In other words, my complaints could be totally unjustified as I am ignorant about current medical pricing. That said, my physical included a flu shot, tetanus shot, EKG reading, hemoccult, and urinalysis. My total came to $359. Maybe the reader of this knows if that is reasonable or not. If not, maybe one way to save money would be to get the flu shot (Influenza vaccine + Pneumovax vaccine= $57 at Dr. Roy's) at a public clinic and get the rest done with the doc? Anyways, it seems like a lot to little old me. All in all, if you have good insurance or are sick of substandard care at the low-income clinics and have the money, I'd definitely recommend Dr. Roy. UPDATE: I originally went to Dr. Roy in Feb. 2007. It is now almost May, and I am having real trouble with the organizational/secretarial aspect of this office, so I'm taking back 2 stars. The next week there is a voice mail greeting from the actual secretary saying messages will be checked several times a day. I have left 3 messages over the past 2 weeks and still no response. Medically I had no problem with this office, but if you are in any sort of time-sensitive situation and/or getting tested at a clinic unfamiliar to this office, the one-secretary setup probably isn't going to be able to handle it, technologically. They don't even take credit cards here.

I asked if I needed a specialist and he said no b/c his mom had the same thing and so he was familiar with it (wtf?). When I saw Dr. Roy, she was very warm and welcoming. She is also smart and asked about my full medical history including whether or not I flossed! :) She gave me a mini-gynolocical exam and then referred me to an endocronoligst (female) who is the bomb! Since then, I have seen Dr. Roy for a few other things and she is awesome! She doesn't order a bunch of unnecessary tests and is very knowledgeable. Thanks Dr. Roy!!
