I can never see my doctor or matter fact any of the other doctors. There's no appointments available on chart..even when you call 99% time your doctor can't see you. I like most of the doctors but what the point when you can't see them. In a process of looking for another place/doctor to go. And no one really cares even your doctor. The physician Anna Cullotta is unfit to practice medicine. She is the first physician in my life where I can confidently say she does more harm than good. She is not only ineffectual slow and indecisive, the decisions and prescriptions she does make are often second grade and at worst harmful. She is unsympathetic and has little regard for patients well being. Avoid at all costs. read more

Dr Chen from Michigan Ave internists LLC I had a first apptmt and she disappointed me in every way : first off no one took my vitals : no blood pressure or pulse ox reading by any nurse . No nurse walked into room before her . Dr Chen had zero bedside manner and as a first apptmt with her as I told her I picked her out as on their website they claim she has " chronic pain and woman's health as a interest " but she denied that and look puzzled . During the apptmt I gave her a large part of history of serious medical problems and other severe medical issues and she was uninterested and didn't ask important questions and was uninterested . I had to prompt her to discuss the severity and high level of dx medical problems but she didn't even suggest blood work or even connect dots of multiple diagnosis's that I have been struggling with for over 10 years. I don't think she looked at my records and did not do chart review as she shld do upon seeing a new patient as she had no familiarity with all my records in sent for a first time visit . I expect this from a md to know the chart and records. I would not waste time on this doctor who had no ideas that wasn't helpful and did not seem to LISTEN to her possible long term patient as I was looking for the captain of my ship but the total lack of interest and walked out of apptmt so disappointed and told person at front desk I would like to explore other doctors as I was won't see this doctor a second time and he told me they don't allow switching doctors ?! I told him it was my first apptmt and I see this as a patient interview and this doctor got a grade as a F. I told him have manager call me to see if anyone else could help me with choosing a better match for a md and no manager could make time to walk out and discuss with me . I found Michigan Avenue Internists a few years ago through Zocdoc. And I wouldn't hesitate to recommend coming here! Dr. Ballintine is hands down one of the best doctors I've ever seen, and I feel so lucky to have her as my primary care physician! Someone once told me your primary care doctor should be like your healthcare quarterback, managing all your concerns and sending you out for referrals as necessary. Dr. Ballintine does just that, with quick and easy referrals to Northwestern when needed and most things managed in-house. She's helped me with everything from migraines and anxiety to infections and annual physicals. Working in healthcare myself, I know I'm a bit of a doctor snob. But Dr. Ballintine exceeds my expectations for what primary care should look like. She's thorough (but not overly so), personable, and remembers each of my healthcare issues (likely thanks to great documentation -- also a plus). Appointments are easy to schedule, and she's quick to respond to messages on the patient portal. Literally zero complaints. Bonus: Michigan Avenue Internists just recently moved to a new office, and it's BEAUTIFUL. read more

I would not recomend this practice to anyone. After Dr. Redinger left I was transitioned to Dr. Ballantine. The annual exam with Dr. Ballantine consists of answering questions, and some blood work. No breast examination or any other examination. Although, she advised me to "contact my gynecologist " for breast examination. Approximately a year and a half ago she switched my extended release Venlafaxine ER to immediate release Venlafaxine without informing me. So, for year and a half my disorder was not treated at all!!! I suffer from anxiety, and immediiate release Venlafaxine is only approved for major depressive disorder. I experienced many withdrawal effects, including bumbing my head into the door! I did not realised that I have been taking a different medication until a pharmacist pointed to me. For the last couple of months I have been trying to be seen by a different physician at the same practice without success. Also, my decission not to see Dr. Ballantine anymore has been questioned by the office staff (in a very interrogatory way!). This is simply alarming!!! read more

Very poor experience. I had an appointment at 9:30but unfortunately got stuck in traffic. I arrived at 9:41. I had to wait in line to check in and was told the doctor wouldn't see me even though I was only 11 minutes late. There was ZERO indication that the policy is so strict that a doctor would actually cancel your appointment if tardy. Everyone does their best to be on time but when I explained I travel weekly for work and it's impossible for me to find time to see a doctor, there was no mercy. I also explained that I have anxiety that I needed to sort out with a doctor before my next trip, no compassion. The doctor that refused to see me after many pleas and only TEN minutes of tardiness is Dr. Valentine. I will not be a returning patient and recommend others understand the lack of humanity this doctor exhibited. read more

For my 1400th review, I thought I would review my doctor's office. If you have Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance, then you are covered going here! I originally came here for a dermatologist appointment. I was impressed that the doctors here all have laptops that they carry with them to every appointment to capture anything and everything about your medical history. Coincidentally, I was looking for an internist, and when I found one, they were part of this medical office! This office has a high tech way to capture the patient's medical history that is helpful to both the doctors and the patients. Through their internet portal, I was able to access my medical history, prescriptions prescribed, and even medical tests that I've had done--to include the results of the test. Each time I come here, the reception staff is very fast, efficient, and friendly. I usually never have to wait very long when I come here for a visit. There was one visit when I had to wait about 30 minutes but the doctor was very apologetic about the wait. During my last visit, I had to have a lab test completed. The results came back within 20 minutes and the doctor was able to consult me on my issues IMMEDIATELY while I was still in the office. I was blown away by how fast they work here. I think having their own in-house lab really helps this office. This office makes me less afraid and less annoyed to see a doctor! Yay! read more

I am in the process of sending in payment for 2 bills from Michigan Avenue Internists. From early November of 2017-late January of 2018 I was in an out of this office with various respiratory illnesses (I am an asthmatic). I kept getting put on different inhalers and antibiotics. Come February...I call the office because I have a 104 degree fever, can barely move and am coughing up orange sputum/phlegm that tasted like metal. They tell me to hold off and come in after 24 hours. I go to a new doctor and am sent immediately for a CT scan and diagnosed with pneumonia. It took me over a month to recover. If I had stayed with this office, who knows what would have happened. Needless to say, I am sending in payment with hesitation, as the care I received was obviously not very specific or focused to someone with a history of respiratory issues. In addition, be prepared to wait to see your practitioner...at least 30+ minutes beyond your scheduled appointment time. read more

Finding an internist in Chicago is far from easy so I turned to yelp to help me find one. I scheduled an appointment with Dr. Desai after noticing a swollen lymph node. With no pain or any other symptoms I was pretty chill entering the office. The office was decent, not the nicest/most updated. Dr. Desai came in l, and from the beginning seemed very rushed. I felt she never actually listened to me, and she felt that from feeling a couple different swollen lymph nodes that she could confirm it was one of two things.. Oh just mono or HIV! And that blood work would be able to confirm that. I sat there for a minute.. HIV!??? Seriously?? She asked me multiple times if I use protection and I confirmed "yes" I also explained that I was tested within the last year and that it would not make sense, including the fact that I had NO symptoms of HIV. I also told her I have zero symptoms of mono! So after 5 nights of no sleep assuming the worst I received my blood work back.. No HIV, no mono.... What a joke. And sadly a total relief. (Loosing my mind at this point) Got second and third opinions at this point (other internists and specialists) all which said don't worry about it, get it checked out just for the sake of your own peace of mind. All results came back solid. Dr. Desai calls back after receiving my ultra sound results (after they've been looked at by other doctors) saying that I need to get to a specialist ASAP because it could be cancer.. (At this point I'm laughing). Explained to her that I got second opinions and I'm not worried. She asked me for the names of doctors, and then I explained to her how I thought her way of handling the entire situation was completely unprofessional and that she should not tell someone they have a chance of carrying HIV until she knows 100%, or at least 50% for heavens sake. I told her how I had panic attacks that week and could not sleep. Her response? (At this point Looking for an apology for her to redeem herself from receiving this review).. "There are other doctors out there you can see, you don't have to come back to me. " Wow really? Didn't know I had options! Bye bye Michigan Ave Internists! When I moved to this city almost 3 years ago and needed to find a doctor.. I did what any sensible person would do. I did not ask one of the 2 people I knew in the city for a recommendation..pft! No, I looked at the list of potential doctors.. and picked the one who had gone to Medical School in my home town! Cause that makes 'em qualified right? Well luckily Dr. Allison Reddinger has turned out to be an amazing physician! She is very thorough, understanding, and kind. Never condescending, which I find extremely important. I have always left feeling very well cared for. As for the office.. The staff is always quite friendly. They do their best to get you in quickly. I've been squeezed in a number of times when feeling ill. The only issue I have ever had was the one time there was a mix up at sign in and I was left in the waiting room for an extended period of time.. but that was partially my fault. All in all.. it really is a great location for those who work in the loop and are looking to squeeze appointments into their lunch hour. read more

The doctors themselves seem competent, but their staff was sub-par. I've been to see Dr. Peters and Dr. Sabin and also I've been to this office to receive vaccinations before going out of the country. When I tried to make an appointment for an annual gynocological exam the staff said they had no way of looking up my insurance to see if that type of exam was covered. I don't know if what she was saying was true, but she didn't offer any solutions and just kept saying "well I don't know." I also received some vaccinations there. I was asked few questions and don't recall having to show ID or anything before I walked down the hall to their lab. The lab technicians shot me up quickly with the vaccine and then let me walk out. One of them chased me down the hallway, however, to ask me if I was pregnant. I told her I was not and she sighed in relief. I wonder what would have happened if I were pregnant and they just didn't ask me to be sure ahead of time!! read more

I went to Dr. Allison Reddinger based on a recommendation from another doctor, and I couldn't have been happier. Dr. Reddinger was kind, attentive and thorough. There's nothing I hate more than feeling like I'm being rushed in the doctor's office, and that was the exact opposite of the way I felt with her. Also, the staff at the office was efficient and polite - they got me in and out in about an hour. Perfect for anyone who works Downtown and needs an internist. read more

Let me preface my review by saying I'm a physician and had a primary care practice until June of 2015. This is, in short, the best primary care practice I have EVER seen. I have been a patient of Dr. Vermylen for a few months now after I arrived in Chicago. I also see Dr. Sabin as my immunologist. They are both phenomenally accessible by email and phone. They're normal people who are physicians and spend time speaking candidly about health issues. I think part of it is a reflection on who they were during their training - namely, Chief Residents at Northwestern's IM residency program. It's a nationally recognized IM training program and to be a Chief you're generally recognized as being one of the best trainees and a good leader. read more

I just had my first allergy consultation and general physical with Dr. Sabin. What a great physician! He listens to all my rambles and rants, and he's very thorough, quick, and compassionate. I've been to plenty of doctors and offices that are not very friendly or competent, and this was a much different and more comforting, helpful experience! I was impressed, all the doctors carry laptops with them, and the patient portal is very easy to use and intuitive. All of the staff, even at the front desk, is very personable and friendly. I felt very comfortable and cared for going in, and plan to see Dr. Sabin as my primary physician for long-term. Another thing to add, if you have some apprehension about shots and blood drawing, don't worry with the nurses who work here! All of them are so friendly and make the procedure quick, painless, and almost fun :) It's VERY hard to find veins on my arms, but the nurses who worked with me were experienced, professional, and calming throughout the whole procedure. read more

After not having seen an internist for a decade i had to get some tests done for work so i got an appointment with Dr.David Vermylen. He is new to the practice and one of the finest doctors i have seen! very caring and took the time to listen to my concerns with patience. Did all the required tests and got back promptly, shared the results on the web portal which is totally cool thing for patients to access information and communicate with the physician. Dr. Desai is great. Very personable and candid. I've also seen Dr. Peters and Dr. Toppel for dermatology issues. I preferred Dr. Toppel. Dr. Peters was nice but I felt Dr. Toppel did a better job at explaining skin issues, medication, and treatment. She made me feel very comfortable. My only qualm is sometimes I have to wait 45 minutes plus to get into an appointment. Even when it is scheduled at 9:45 am, shortly after they opened. If you can, I recommend scheduling the earliest appointment possible to avoid any long wait times. read more

I have been seeing Dr. Reddinger for many years. She always takes her time and is informative. In her absence, I also saw Dr. Sabin who is equally great. My bf and friend both see Dr. Sabin for allergies and also found him to be helpful and kind. They are quick to help and willing to work through issues with you. I have used Dr. Reddinger to refer me to different specialties and she is happy to suggest a few to try. I have always had great experiences with the staff as well. Checking in they are kind and I found their phone system quick and efficient. They have an off hours line to page an on-call physician who will call back immediately on the weekends and handle your issue over the phone. I honestly cannot speak highly enough. I am surprised by some of the reviews. Part of the reason I like going here is the front desk staff- it is difficult to find competent and kind staff in Chicago. read more

This office has a crazy phone system to navigate, but once you get past the number pressing, it's a great experience as far as doctors go. I've always been seen within a few minutes of my scheduled appointment. I see Dr. Desai, and for the most part I have been very satisfied with her. She is always very friendly and recaps the details of my previous visits and results at the start of each visit. She has been thorough with any tests and has referred me out to both a very good eye doctor and dentist. Sometimes I feel like she is a bit overly cautious, but I would must rather have someone who wants to be certain of my health than a doctor who doesn't take the time to investigate. read more

I was looking for a new doctor after having a number of disappointing experiences when the Michigan Ave Internist were recommended to me by another doctor. I called them on a Thursday afternoon and had my first appointment 3 days later. It was great! For my initial consultation I scheduled to have full physical completed. I showed up early to my appointment so in lieu of waiting, they had me go into their in-house lab to start my blood work. Afterwards I was met by a nurse who took my height and weight, then I was seen promptly by Dr. Louis Hiotis I found Dr. Hiotis very knowledgeable and pleasant. He was very through in his review of my medical history and immediately identified a way to help with me with my hypertension. While I have only had one appointment thus far, I am encouraged by what I have seen. read more

The five stars is for Dr. Hiotis. Pleasant personality (especially considering that he only deals with sick people every day). He seems to really care about your well-being. I have never in my life been so happy with my doctor than I am with Dr. Desai! Granted, in the past I had a pretty terrible family doctor. For example, she would ask me how I'm doing on a medication I was taken off of four years prior! Also, she not only brushed off my health concerns, but she'd make me feel silly for bringing them up: "Dr. M, there's something else I wanted to ask you. See, I haven't been able to sleep in about two weeks." "Cut down on caffeine. You'll be fine." "But I don't dri..." "You'll be fine. Now don't forget to stop at reception on your way out." Dr. Desai is the EXACT OPPOSITE of my previous doctor. She listens to me ramble very patiently and seems genuinely concerned about my concerns. I have been going to Michigan Avenue Internists, and specifically Dr. Shirley Ter Molen, since 1999. She is wonderful - absolutely a great listener, takes my concerns seriously, fits me in even when she absolutely does not have a spare moment on her schedule, and follows up with me personally for test results, medications, recommendations on treatment (including one trip to the ER). Did I mention she came to see me in the hospital when I ended up being admitted for 2 days? (I know - she's supposed to do that. But I have to tell you it was a real relief to see her and know she was in charge of my treatment after a parade of total stranger-doctors.) She has taken excellent care of both my husband and I. Last month, I also saw Dr. Greg Ewert in the same practice as Dr. Ter Molen was off on the one day I could come in with a long-lasting illness. Dr. Ewert was also great - exactly understood my issue and provided a treatment plan that got me back on my feet. Just an outstanding practice. I agree with another reviewer - the phone system is a bear to get through, but once you do they are very helpful at getting you where you need to go. read more

1st time patient to Dr. Hiotis for a physical exam. The office is in a great location in downtown, easy access to city transportation. The office was clean and the wait was not long in the sitting area. I was asked to enroll on Dr. Hiotis's web site for follow up information. Dr. Hiotis was pleasant to work with and did a good job for basic primary care and a physical exam. I did blood work and never received a call back after the exam, letting me know the results. I was able to get the results on web site though. Dr. Hiotis made time for me when needed. He is a kind man and caring. I would recommend him for primary care needs. I had an appointment at 8a.m., arrived 10 minutes early. Checked in w/ an indifferent receptionist. Sat in the waiting room w/ a LOUD tv set on and one or two other clients. Both were called in; two more clients came in and were called for their appointments. Finally I went to the receptionist at 8:20 a.m. and asked about my appointment. She checked, said, "yes, they know you are here" After another 5 minutes of the LOUD LOUD TV and being ignored, I left. read more

I had a great experience at Michigan Avenue Internists. I saw Dr. Desai and she was great! She took her time during my appointment and I felt she was very thorough and answered all of my questions. I never once felt she was in a rush to see another patient and she spent almost an hour with me. She was fantastic! I have definitely found my new doctor. Also, the offices were very clean and the staff was friendly. there was one nurse who did seem a bit grouchy, but she could have been having an off day, you never know? I would definitely recommend this office and Dr. Desai as a great GP. read more

While the doctors seem knowledgable, the wait time is ridiculous. I've been here twice to see Dr. Peters. The first time I came to the office was during my lunch, and I waited an hour before I was seen. Needless to say, I was late getting back to the office. The second time I scheduled the last appointment of the day and I also waited an hour to be seen. I had to leave the office to feed the parking meter for additional time and come back. read more

I moved into the Loop about 3 years ago, and was looking for a primary care physician and a dermatologist. I thought Michigan Avenue Internists would be the perfect place for me. I was able to get a quick appointment with Dr. Hiotis, and the initial exam was fine. The first opening they gave me to see the dermatologist was 6 weeks in the future. Dr. Hiotis called back about a week later with the results of my blood work, which was fine except for a slightly low blood iron level. He said he could order another test to investigate the condition further, and I assumed that he had done so. I called a few days later to ask about the status of the new test. I ran through phone tree hell trying to leave a message for the doctor. And when the doctor finally called me back, he didn't recall who I was or the test we had discussed! Fast forward to the dermatological visit with Dr. Peters. Pleasant guy, but seemed rushed. He spent 5 minutes or so doing a general exam and calling out blemish codes to his assistant, and then did a biopsy on a spot I was concerned about. He said he would have biopsy results within a week. A week passes, and no biopsy results. I call the office, and go through their phone tree hell to try to get in touch with the doctor. After several attempts, the only way I was finally able to leave a message for Dr. Peters was through the after-hours answering service. I think they intentionally make it very difficult for patients to contact the staff directly. I'm sure they are all fine physicians, but the whole practice seemed very distant and inaccessible to me. I didn't feel like I was treated like a person - after the brief face-to-face appointments, I was just another chart to be dealt with. I wish there had been an option to e-mail the doctors or their staff directly - it would have been so much easier. Maybe things have improved since 2007, but I haven't been willing to go back and find out. I'm still looking for a good primary care doc and dermatologist...anyone have any suggestions? read more

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Dr. Shirley Ter Molen. She has been my Primary Care doc for a few years now. She takes the time to sit down and talk to you and always remembers things about you. Meaning you're not just a number to her. I had a bout of anxiety last summer and was unsure about spending a ton of money out of pocket to visit a psychiatrist. She was happy to sit down and talk to me about what was going on and told me about my options. She wasn't pushy about any drugs and I felt like she genuinely cared about what was going on in my life. Most doctors will just hand you a script and maybe a psych reference and get you out the door. I couldn't be more grateful for her. Michigan Ave Internists also offers an online email exchange system that you can use to contact your doc and pull your records/results from. I've used this many times to quickly ask the doctor questions or even just ask if I should come in (sometimes it's not even worth going in because there is nothing they can do for you). Dr. Ter Molen always gets back to me quickly and it's nice not having to wait for a call back or struggling to get an appointment when you feel lousy. If you're new in town or just looking for a new doctor I would highly recommend Dr. Ter Molen...although I'd like to keep her all to myself. read more

I went to see Dr. Reddinger this morning for a physical and she was super nice. I wanted a physical before I train for the Chicago marathon and I haven't had a general practioner since I was a kid. She spent a great deal of time with me going over everything, medical history, family history, surgeries, issues I have, etc. It's very refreshing to not be rushed in and out like I'm used to. And she was very easy to talk to and didn't judge. I'll definitely be back. read more

I showed up today for my appointment on time, did not have to wait long in the waiting room, they let me finish my paperwork in the exam room and I didn't have to sit around waiting for the doctor either. At first I was a little put off by the receptionist answering the phone, but we got through and I managed to make an appointment with Dr. Sabin a couple of weeks out. I got to the office and appreciated how quickly I was able to get in - before I even completed my form, and Dr. Sabin came in like a minute after that. This has got to be a record. I feel like I'm usually always waiting for the doctor so this was a pleasant surprise. Dr. Sabin was very thorough, addressing all my questions and concerns and summarizing them at the end. I always knew I was allergic to nickel, but never thought about it in food. He gave me a list so at least I know and aware. I'm sure some of that is the culprit of me being more itchy at times. Crap, now as I sit here I just remembered I forgot to pick up my prescription that he already called in before I even left the office. They have online access that allows for communicating to patients as well so that we don't have to play phone tag. What an efficient office! read more

I saw Dr. Hiotis on a recommendation from another doctor for a physical. I've never had one before so I had no idea what to expect. I thought he was very nice and thorough. He put everything into a laptop instead of writing it all down which makes sense to me since we are all trying to save a few trees nowadays. I had a complete blood workup and a tetanus shot after meeting with the doctor. He called me back a week later (after 5:00 on a Friday) and all of my tests came back high so he had me come in to redo a few of them and they were then fine. When I went in the second time I was not on the list to see anyone in the lab but they had no problem getting me in. I also spoke with and received help from their billing department so in all, everyone was very helpful. In the 2 visits, I did not spend more than 5 minutes in the waiting room. read more

My husband and I have been going to Dr. Peters for dermatologiy and Dr. Hiotis as our internist for years. Highly recommended. Both are very nice, personable guys who really listen to you. Hiotis helped me kick a recurring (3 years) sinus infection by getting me off antibiotics. We are really happy with these docs. read more
