My wife and I dined here on a RedBalloon voucher that gets you the seafood chowder and the cold/hot seafood platters. The Terrace also offers a comprehensive a la carte menu, which I can't really comment upon. Anyways, we had:
Seafood Chowder - 4.0 / 5.0. The chowder base is delicious and as good as any I've had. However, the only identifiable seafood in the chowder the night I dined here was salmon, which is a bit of an odd choice. Perhaps the idea was to play off the dill cream that the chowder was topped with, but it didn't quite work. There are a number of things that would have paired with the chowder base better than salmon; clams, mussels, prawns, bugs, and/or lobster all would have made a better fit (and made the chowder nearly perfect). Still, the chowder was an enjoyable start to the meal.
Cold Seafood Platter - 3.0 / 5.0. We found this one to be somewhat disappointing. The prawns, crab, and oysters were all fresh, tasty, and (in the case of the prawns) cooked nicely. The mussels were just slightly overcooked, and the Moreton Bay bugs were, with the exception of a single mouthful, very overcooked and rubbery. That one mouthful was delicious, but unfortunately most of the rest were tough, chewy, and bland. Then there's the question of sauce; the platter comes with large bowls of tartare and mayo/aioli. I didn't feel that the tartare sauce paired nicely with any of the seafood on the platter. The mayo/aioli was better, but still left a bit to be desired. I'd suggest serving smaller portions of sauce, and adding a nice spicy cocktail sauce into the mix (for the prawns) and possibly a simple drawn butter or bernaise sauce as well (for the bugs). Also, it was more a "room temperature platter" than a cold platter. It might be an idea to replace the lettuce base with some crushed ice instead, and serve the seafood on top of that. The fresh fruit served with the platter was abundant and delicious, and complemented the seafood well.
Hot Seafood Platter - 4.0 / 5.0. This one was more enjoyable. The scallop, prawns, and mahi were all nicely cooked. The grilled snapper was just a bit over, but seasoned nicely. The platter includes a caesar salad, which was good, and a crab and noodle salad which had the best tasting crabmeat of the night. But again sauce was an issue. Coconut prawns practically beg for something sweet and spicy/tangy to accompany them, like a nice mango chutney or at least a sweet-chili inspired sauce. But what we got was basically a rehash of the same sauces served with the cold platter.
Service was friendly and attentive. No complaints there.
Portion size is generous, bordering on excessive. We couldn't finish everything that was brought to us, giving up about 80% through the hot platter. Which is unfortunate because the menu included some delicious sounding desserts, and the ones we saw being brought out to other tables certainly looked delicious as well. But we were too full of seafood to give one a try. I'd suggest dropping a couple of prawns and a bug from the cold platter, and including a dessert with the promo voucher instead. Or in lieu of that, if you plan on dining here on the RedBalloon voucher be sure to bring a healthy appetite. You'll need it.
Prices are slightly higher than average. A number of restaurants on the Sunshine Coast offer ''seafood towers" similar to what you can get here, generally for a slightly cheaper price. But not by much. In general the prices here aren't terribly far off the mark.
Overall a good experience, but stopping short of a great one. The Terrace needs a little work on quality control (those bugs were really quite overcooked), and a bit more on flavor combinations. Particularly when it comes to sauce.
