There are several wine and liquor stores in Lake Placid (based on how people seem to socialize there, there certainly seems to be enough business to sustain several liquor stores....). Of them all, Terry Robards has emerged as my favorite. They have a pretty decent selection of wines for their size, including some interesting and non-typical selections. The people there know the stock well, and when I went on a Sunday and had a question about a purchase and the salesperson DIDN'T know anything about the bottle I was interested in, she called the owner (impressive). They are very friendly - significantly friendlier than the folks at the other stores, based on my experience. And they are very dog-friendly, which I really like. And they give a 10% discount on wines, and 7% on spirits (why they don't just lower the prices, I can't say - I assume there's some reason they do it this way). In any case, Terry Robards has emerged as my favorite liquor store in Lake Placid (and it doesn't hurt that it is in the same small plaza as the Mini Euro Mart, which I love - if you're going to have people over for drinks, you can get everything you need in one stop). read more

Great little wineshop with friendly & helpful people working there. Prices are a little high but it's still cheaper to buy a bottle to drink in your hotel room vs drinking a $14 glass of wine from the hotel bar! The owner's dog was there - very well behaved & has his own doghouse outside! read more

Tim made my first time experience of buying alcohol online a memorable one. Before, i was very nervous and skeptical of buying alcohol online but when i received my first purchase, i was sold. The packaging was really well done and the bottles were well protected. And it only took 3 days for me to receive my bottles which is fast! If you've never bought alcohol online, i highly recommend giving this place a try and also their app is amazing and easy to use! They're very friendly and accommodating when i made my first purchase using their app. This place will be my go-to whenever i need a bottle that i cannot get here in my state. What a great wine shop!! I had been to their old location and wasn't impressed. The new place is beautiful! Great selection and lots of samples. We've worked with Tim on wine selections and he's very knowledgable and excited about wine. They seems to always have a bottle or two open for tasting and from what Tim told me, they do some big tastings about once a month. Amazing experience at Terry Robards. Spent the weekend in lake placid a few months back with my wife and our first stop was to to Terry Robards. My wife and I are both Bourbon enthusiasts/ collectors so we decided to check out the local spots. The manager was a great guy. Very personable and knowledgeable. I told him of some of the rare bourbons that we have been hunting for which is when he excused himself and came out with one the bourbon I've been looking for for a while. Not only did I buy it but it was for a very fare price. Overall his whiskey selection is very good and prices were great (especially compared to the other stores in the area). Would highly recommend them would not wast time at the other Liquor stores in the area. read more

A friend and I stopped in to see if they had any local wines this past Friday. When we arrived the two women working asked us at least three times if they could help us find anything. Both of us are native speakers of English so I am not sure why they had such difficulty understanding the word "No, we're just looking." Finally, my friend relented and mentioned that she was seeking some local wines. The one woman jumped to point out that although they only had two local wines, one was from Alexandria Bay (not all that local at nearly three hours away and not part of the Adirondack region). My friend picked up the other bottle of wine reading the title and the clerk IMMEDIATELY grabbed a bottle and said that she would put it on the counter for my friend. Mind you, all she did was pick up the bottle to get a closer look and read the title on the label. She said not one word about wanting to buy it. Meanwhile, as I was walking the same woman came over and started pointing out various wines, talking over me as I said I was simply looking but if they had Raw Power I would be interested. After talking over me and failing to hear me, I decided enough was enough and both my friend and I left. I noticed the other employee closely following another customer, and the look of annoyance on that customer's face was painfully obvious to me as I was having the same experience. Avoid. In the Town of North Elba, if you want to drop off a donation to the food pantry, participate in raising money for breast or testicular cancer, hold a meeting of your volunteer committee, stuff envelopes for your elementary school's event, or catch up on the town's news, you go to Terry Robards Wines & Liquors, named for the oenophile Terry Robards. Terry Robards is a wine writer and scholar. His life is a series of stories that should be told while sitting with your interlocutor in recliners by a glowing, fragrant fireplace. His first published book was The NY TIMES BOOK OF WINE, ©1976. He was one of the first American writers to specialize in writing about wines and certainly the most prolific and influential. You could arguably say that today's Millennials' obsession with wine has one of its deep roots in Terry Robard's work. The Robards shop is big enough to dance a Virginia reel in. You can't mistake the fact that it is a liquor store, but it is golden, bright and cheery and serves as far more than the local package store. It serves as an unofficial Lake Placid networking hub. The walls are lined with gleaming bottles, above which are displayed vintage advertisements, photos of Terry through his long storied career, maps, and curated wine ephemera. You could wander the store gazing and letting your thoughts meander. It's like a museum of wines. The center of the room is punctuated by inviting wooden display racks featuring rows and tiers of wines. Once a few years ago, Julie Robinson Robards, the co-owner and Terry's wife, hosted a jewelry swap here, for Breast Cancer Month. We each brought jewelry from home that we were willing to part with, and Julie displayed the collection elegantly, like canapés at a tea party. We guests, all women, moved around the store chatting with each other and sipping complimentary wines. The silver cat pin I'd donated was snapped up for $10, which went into a tall glass container in the center of the table. I got a set of pink pearls for $50. (I bargained, even though it was for charity.) The charity we were raising money for was the local hospital system, Adirondack Health. In all, over the course of the month, Julie's breast cancer fundraising efforts yielded $1,200 for the hospital. Julie specified it was for the comfort of women who were sick. A subsequent Testicular Cancer Month fundraiser and No-Shave November also raised over $1,000 each for parts of the hospital system. Julie is a musician and antiquarian. She loves raising money and volunteering for the community. She goes on to tell me, "Our other big fund raiser was the one we did for the 40 starving and neglected horses that were found in Essex and were eventually taken in by Crane Mountain Valley Horse Rescue. The generosity of the people was overwhelming. We topped $4,000 for that one." Tim Robinson, the store manager, co-owner and Julie's oldest son, comes breezing in with his young daughter Rylee, whom he picked up from the elementary school. Tim's a community-minded man who volunteers for the Lake Placid Business Assocation (LPBA), Shipman Youth Center, recently joined Lions Club, and helps to run Eat ADK Restaurant Week. Sometimes when you come in the store there's dogs: Famous Caymus the black lab mix who modeled for a famous vodka company, Holly the elderly spaniel and Baxter the white Scottie dog. On a rainy spring mid-afternoon, the customer traffic is steady. April greets everyone warmly. "It smells like a campfire," she advises a couple who are thinking about bourbon. The customers ask: "So you don't have one of these open?" They ask about the baby bears that escaped from the Adirondack Wildlife Refuge. April reports that the bears needed to be walked home three miles through the woods once they were found. "Thanks so much, we love your store, it's great!" Another customer says he wants a bottle of Malbec that the restaurants charge $15 a glass for. He leaves with the Malbec, a High West Campfire and a Hetta. April's patter continues: "It drinks almost like a Scotch." "We also have a sake section." "Have a great night." read more

As a Bourbon collector these kind of stores are the worst. Employees take bottles of hard to get whiskey and flip it on secondary markets. Least you could do is figure out a fair way to offer it to you loyal customers instead of just flipping it for extra profit. read more

My boyfriend and I come up to Lake Placid for about 3 to 4 weeks throughout the year. Every time we do we have to stop in here. First they have an amazing selection and knowledge to help you choose but second they are SUPER awesome people. We always are treated to a great tasting, great laughs, and amazing service. I love this store. They are in a new location, so look for them over on Saranac Avenue. They have an outstanding selection of wines at every price point and a knowledgeable staff that can help you pick out something from smaller purveyors that you might not have previously been aware. They also have a great whiskey selection (my personal favorite), and recently helped me select a bottle of Hirsch Small Batch Bourbon that I love. Great place with really great staff. read more

Tim and staff @ Terry Robards are super friendly and helpful. Always have a good selection @ different price points to suit your needs. They frequently host tastings which feature great wines and local foods, so keep an eye out. Went to a seminar on Ports and learned a lot, including that apparently I do like port, I just hadn't tasted the right one until then! read more

My favorite liquor store in town. Absolutely love it there. Friendly and helpful staff. Kind of confused by the bad reviews below. Why is it a bad thing for an employee to try to help you. Weird complaints. Just ignore them. This place is the best. For sure. They deserve a 5/5 rating. read more
