Ah, Tesco. Based out of the UK, unknown by most Americans, it's like Super Target meets HEB meets Meijer meets Costco meets your local suburban mall, crammed into the city center. Granted, I was there nearly a decade ago, friends tell me it's still the same. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, yanno? I did a lot of shopping there, obviously for food. But adding to that, like Meijer and Super Target, Tesco has a massive supermarket coupled with a massive department store and this one is multi-level. At that time, they carried some of the same brands that Target had in the US, such as Cherokee and Merona. I recognized these, as a Target w**re (loud and proud, baby!). I bought several pieces for my 6 year old twins (age at that time) and the clothing held up really well. They loved starting the first grade in clothes that came from "our other country". They were passed down to a younger cousin when they outgrew everything...at the age of 11. The clothing held up that well. Really good prices, a good organics section for an international chain big box store (organic is called 'Bio' in Europe), pretty decent layout, all my experiences with that store were good. Don't expect American style customer service at the check out lines. It's NOT America, the lines move really fast and the culture is VERY different in the CR than it is in the States. Learning a few key phrases in Czech is always helpful and will improve your interactions with locals, including those working the registers. read more

As a American, I grew up with supermarkets, they're the place you go, when you need food and such. Then at some point in our lives, our normal supermarkets turned into super-stores, where you have places like Costco, Sam's Club etc, Target, etc... a place where you can just about buy everything you need, one stop shopping. While we were on vacation in Prague, we were curious to see what the Checz Republic considers a supermarket. Just a few blocks down, there was a Tesco. Upon walking in, it looked like a cross between a Costco and a Super-Target. The complex was a multi-level entity, where the street level and upper levels were more like a department store and the bottom layer was your market. The supermarket reminded me of the Korean markets you would see in Los Angeles. The only difference was, we were in international waters, so it still had the same feeling. The shelves were stocked with familiar items that I've seen at other ethnic markets growing up and a bunch of local favorites. The whole experience was interesting, to say the least. read more

I love Tesco in general because they have a good variety of self branded products that are excellent. Considering they do not have branches in Germany, spotting one in Prague brought a smile to my face :-) This one has many of the classic English products along with a wide range of local beers and so on. We ended up doing a bit of Christmas shopping here for non perishable grocery items and things you cannot easily get in Germany. Prices are reasonable and whilst more than what you would pay in the uk, however, better than what we would pay for the same in Germany. read more

I ended up here more times than I care when I was in Prague for New Year's. It's conveniently located near public transit and tourist attractions. The supermarket/grocery portion is located in the basement or, I suppose, the first floor. The rest of the floor is your basic department store where you can buy perfume, clothes, shoes, gifts. I bought a pair of cheap shoes but they were no good in the rain since my socks would be wet even stepping through small puddles. You get what you pay for! I did have problems using my American debit/credit cards here and ended up having to withdraw cash. The workers all seemed to speak English. The grocery portion of the store was hit or miss. Maybe because it was around New Year's, and many tourists around, the fruit and vegetable shelves were sometimes empty. There was a wide selection of freshly-baked breads. I was jealous that in America, we don't get such a wide varieties of freshly-baked breads in our supermarkets, let alone as cheap as the Czech Republic! Also well-loaded sausage, meat, and fish sections. Know your grams and kilograms! On New Year's Eve, the store was obviously crowded with locals and tourists grabbing last minute food stuffs and alcohol. One Aussie I met in the beer aisle asked how much Czech koruna (CZK) to the Aussie dollar since I had a conversion app on on my phone. I'm sure he was pleasantly surprised how cheap beer was. One bottle of Gambrinus came to 8,9 CZK or $0.39 USD! (at the exchange rate at that time). How do they afford to sell beer so cheap? Much cheaper than bottled water and soda! It's like encouraging the population to drink beer :D There is a self-checkout aisle, but if you're buying items with no barcode (i.e. fresh bread, pastries, vegetables), avoid it unless you know the Czech name. I also had a hard time using my American debit/credit card at self-checkout so ended up using cash. read more

Enjoyed this supermarket inside the shopping center. Pretty much had everything we needed and a wide selection with reasonable prices. A short walk from City Center made it easy. Our chip credit card worked great. Friendly service. read more

This was a bizarre experience. Instead of motorway services they have tesco! They sell tyres and live carp! these are a traditional christmas dinner and they keep them in the bath until despatched. It was like going back in time. The consumer goods are quite old fashioned by our standards but it is a novel experience just the same. Food was good by the way, some kind of stew. read more

I LOVE this market!! The Czech love their chocolate, their bread (Including pastries) and liquid bread (aka beer), their dairy, and their liquor. Well, this place is the Library of Congress of ALL of these. And, they are all offered a prices to make an American think that he died and went to supermarket heaven. read more

Excellent location, in the center of Prague, close to trams and tube stations. Great place to shop and find moreless everything from items to daily use as well as presents from you visit to Prague. Also serve fast food. All at reasonable prices. read more
