I started going to Texas Southern University back in 2003. Life happened and I wasn't able to finish. I e recently enrolled again this past semester in my 30s. And I can honestly say it has been an amazing decision. I contemplated on going back because I wasn't sure if I would feel left behind with younger adults knowing more technology that I do. It has been an extremely easy transition. Okay my review of the school. At first it might seem unorganized. And this school might not be a right fit for everyone. But one thing I have learned with this school is that they honestly care about the students. And they want you to succeed. The classes aren't extremely big and EVERY single professor is available to help you. The school itself isn't as expensive as other schools either. If you're considering going to college. Or returning back to school I recommend this one. But just go back and do it!! read more

Our family is deeply disappointed and heartbroken by the way a current female Texas Southern University student has reportedly been treated while pursuing an opportunity within TSU Athletics. My niece is currently a sophomore at TSU, following in the footsteps of her mother, a proud alumna who earned her master's degree from this institution and has given back through teaching, volunteer work, organizations, and community involvement. My niece has shown that same commitment. She is dedicated not only to excelling academically, but also to becoming an active member of the campus and surrounding community. She has achieved honor roll recognition multiple times and takes her education and involvement at TSU seriously. She applied for a student management position with the men's basketball program. The posting did not state that applicants were required to be male, and she was invited to interview. During that interview, she reports being told that the program does not typically hire women for the position and being questioned about why she did not instead pursue a position with the women's basketball program. Her gender should never have been the focus. Men work in coaching, management, administrative, athletic training, and support roles throughout women's athletics every day. Women should be afforded the same opportunities within men's athletics when they are qualified to do the job. After she reported what occurred, the matter has now become a dispute over what was or was not said. However, there were other students present who may have heard the interaction. Interview them. Review the original posting. Review the hiring criteria and documentation. Determine whether male and female applicants were truly afforded the same opportunity. We also want to acknowledge Cynthia Buckley for listening to my niece, engaging with her concerns, and demonstrating due diligence thus far. Our family genuinely appreciates her assistance. What remains heartbreaking is that a young woman who has worked hard academically, earned repeated honor roll recognition, sought opportunities to contribute to her university, and proudly continued her family's TSU legacy could leave an interview feeling that being a woman made her less welcome. My niece may be young, but she is fully capable of advocating for herself, and she has a family standing firmly behind her. We expect Texas Southern University to conduct a fair and thorough review, speak with witnesses, review the documentation, ensure there is no retaliation, and take appropriate action if her complaint is substantiated. There is pride, history, and family legacy attached to Texas Southern University. There should also be trust that every student will receive a fair opportunity regardless of gender. read more

I've had one of the worst administrative experiences with Texas Southern University. It is extremely difficult to get ahold of anyone, and when you finally do, it can take weeks to receive a response. I have been trying to get clear information about their aviation program for months, and the lack of communication and professionalism is disappointing. At this point, I honestly question how many of the positive reviews are from actual students, because my experience has been the complete opposite. I wanted to support an HBCU aviation program, but this kind of administration gives the school a terrible reputation. It makes prospective students feel like they are not a priority. read more

Aside from student service and financially aid passing you back and forth like a tennis ball because no one wants to actually work or help you, this has got to be the worse higher learning institute in the state of Texas. I wasted 1 year here and I wish I could take that time back because they are worthless. They had the audacity to charge me for classes that I withdrew from because I missed the deadline but fortunately I emailed the correct deadline to my personal email which was totally different from what they said it was. I am sending all of this information to the governors office and report this and no telling what other fraud they are doing. I wouldn't send an animal there. But the sad thing is that most of the instructors are awesome. read more

I'm extremely sadden by the experience that I've had with the Administrative staff. I've always submitted any documentation by every deadline. You never hear a response from their staff. You have to call back almost every week in order to get an answer regarding anything and you may get an answer months later. Most of their staff is incompetent and don't even abide by the regulations that they set. read more

My Experience was great, I love how often Thurgood Marshall students would often come by. It was the first time I was able to see Sororities on campus. Yall, we have the most beautiful culture. I wish that I had stayed and graduated from TSU, life's biggest regrets for me. It always reminded me of the Cosby Show/Different World, Hillman College. #TeamTSU. If you are a transfer student you will have a great experience here. It was such a smooth transition with bringing my credits over and graduating. The only unfortunate thing is the community within the transfer student community is not the best. It could be because I attended school during and post early pandemic. The staff is very nice and prompt for sure better experience than the average HBCU. You can also finesse parking in the parking garage for free if you commute. Do not pay for a parking pass. Park in the teacher lot of it's for short term (visiting or taking one class) and then the garage is open and free. They do not regulate the lot so if you are worried about safety yikes but I've never had any issues. read more

if i could rate it a -10 i would. let's start with the acceptance rate.. 97% that should tell you a lot vs the graduation rate is 26%. this school is more than trash they should make it a university of houston extra closet or something. TSU is MONEY HUNGRY they will take your money and give you nothing. no answer no email no call back nothing they could care less if you were on your last breath. the financial office couldn't give a single flying f*ck they don't answer the phone EVER you will be on hold til you rot. they'll answer emails when you cc anyone above them or even spam them 10+times. theyre meal plan is 7k for the same exact food every week. chicken on monday tacos on tuesday spaghetti on wednesday hard curry chicken on thursdays fish on friday. its sad. the lunch staff are nice tho kudos to them. may i not start with the campus. old dirty rotten you name it. only thing they care about is there trees if you know. lets start on the dorms! particular FRESHMAN DORMS. your visitation is 3 pm to 11pm on weekdays and til 1 am on weekends. they will take your visitation anytime they want so no you cannot have guest no matter what! the building staff is trash your ra's don't care about you at all they don't help guide or support they just gossip about your and your business. everyone at this school is unprofessional and it's like working at a daycare. if you want to waste your time by all means come to TSU it's only getting worse and the professors lol dont get me started. TSU is a waste of money please don't come here it's very ghetto students get ran over, into fights, students carry guns and other weapons on campus, it's a open campus the police stay in the dining hall cause all they do is eat never protect anything. the security guards at the dorms sleep so i'm not sure what they're securing.. i have a million reasons why i'd never choose this school again and i hope you wouldn't either. read more

Im a transfer student and this is not the ideal hbcu I thought TSU was. Im actually very disappointed that they fit all the negative stereotypes. If you want anything done, you have to do it in person. Emailing and calling will get you nowhere. (They seem very short staffed) Half of The professors ive had so far really suck.. Always late, very entitled as far as running a classroom, lack of respect for students, very low effort in actually teaching a subject, etc.. They do not contact you when there's an update on anything (fafsa, va affairs, student accounting) so unless you are consistent with checking your status on anything, you'll never know whats going on. And it seems most of the staff members keep attitudes that make u not even want to talk to them. I've transferred so many times due to moving around texas that i refuse to transfer again. Otherwise, I wouldnt stay enrolled here. On a brighter note, the campus is beautiful when the sun is out. if its raining, invest in rainboots because the tiger walk is going to flood. read more

***THIS WILL BE A BIAS REVIEW*** Ahhhh My Alma Mater, Where do I begin. I graduated in 2007 and am so happy for the experience of this school. In my opinion the media gives it a bad rap for reasons I won't go into in this review, i'll give you a clue..(it rhymes with spacist). All the professors are dedicated and focused on the success of students who want to succeed. The dynamic of this area of 3rd ward in general is changing so that can only be good news for TSU. Tuition is average among Texas schools. I highly recommend the School of Communication because that's where I got my degree in. Kudos to President Rudley. He has really changed the game and moved TSU to becoming a highly competitive HBCU. read more

I have been a student at TSU for the past 3 years while completing my undergrad and truly loved being apart of the community- however since completing my graduation requirements this year (i.e. since i am no longer a money source for this institution) I literally cannot get 1 single email or phone call returned. It has been TEN WEEKS since i first began reaching out for more info on degree being mailed / confirming my requirements are met and I have been ignored by multiple employees. Yet i continue getting emails encouraging me to sign up and pay for more classes. I'm sure if i called for that reason I would get an answer quickly. I am disappointed and this campus should be ashamed at how it treats its grads on their way out the door!!! I do not feel valued or heard AT ALL!!!!! read more

I love my school! Like everything in life, it's only as good as you make it. It's in the perfect city to grow as a young adult. Houston is a moving fast and TSU is keeping up. I'm glad I came to TSU instead of going to a PWI. read more

Don't study engineering in this college. 1st This is not accreditate course and non of the engineering company going to give you chance. Forget about job in engineering company, they will not review your resume if they see TSU, even you have a good GPA like me. 2nd - education quality is very low. Hmmm, I really don't know how to review a university. I chose to come back after 20+ years, so I obviously like it. Perhaps I'll give a history lesson. TSU is an HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities), founded in 1927 as Houston Colored Junior College. After undergoing 3 name changes, it received its current name in 1951 (formerly known as Houston College For Negroes and Texas State College for Negroes). Mikey Leeland, Barbara Jordan, Michael Strahan, Kirk Whalum, and several others have graduated from TSU. It has one of the best and most diverse law schools. 27% of all African American pharmacists in U.S. graduated from Texas Southern University. It is approved by the FAA to train Aviation Science students through use of flight simulators...that's all I have for now. read more

This is a smaller teaching institution and that provides the opportunity for personal interaction directly with decision makers. Worst service I've ever dealt with. I had to go in person about 8 times just to register for one summer class. Nobody knows what they're doing. They just sent me from building to building, it almost seemed like none of them wanted to do any work. All of the people are on their desks just watching their tv shoes while answering your questions. Then the day the class started they changed the professor, and the only reason I was taking the class there was because of the professor. The swapped professor was horrible. So I decided to drop the class the 3rd day and for three days they kept 50%, $700. Also the "counselor" that was in the student service office in the technology building seemed to care more about you signing in on her sign in sheet as if she was trying to fill a quota rather than helping you. Then on top of that she would be gone on 2-3 hour lunch breaks. Overall horrible experience, I would not recommend to anyone. read more
