Sent two daughters through HCHS. I felt compelled to write a review because the negative comments out there do not reflect our experience, nor the experience of anyone we know. Both of my daughters were able to play their favorite sports, academically challenged, well-prepared for collegem and accepted into Texas A&M's Mays Business School. The school did an incredible job supporting them both academically and the individual attention went beyond expectations for thier specific needs. Tutoring is free/included and easy to access before school after school, during lunch and ILT. Every parent-attended event blew me away. The campus gives a mini-college vibe / nostalgic high-school feel, wrapped in Christianity. It's a SUPER small enrollment ~550, which means it won't be/can't be everyone's cup of tea. If negative comments are giving you hesitation, please don't let that sway you. Go see it for yourself. Do a shadow day, watch a show, visit a pep rally, or attend a home game. You'll feel the energy, see the warmth in community, and the heart of this school immediately -- and ONLY then will you know whether these are "your people," too. I attended HC for all four years of high school. If you value your child's mental health and future success, do not send them to Houston Christian. This place was my hell. I've been graduated for a little over half a decade and I'm still in therapy for the things that happened to me here- I struggle to leave the house most days because I'm so deeply afraid of others due to the constant torment I endured from faculty, staff, and students. I was not a bad kid. I was an A/B student who preferred to keep to myself, but I was deemed "weird" and that, of course, meant I was fair game for bullying. Admin was aware and did nothing (in some cases they participated in the abuse). I had a guidance counselor tell me my clinical panic disorder could be cured if I "prayed to Jesus more" (this quote is from Mr. Chavez, if he's still there). During this same conversation he told me "no one is going to save you" if reference to the fact I was seeking help for my constant daily panic attacks (btw, this has made seeking help for anything as an adult exceptionally hard since I default believe I'm not worthy of help). During my time at HC, I tried to kill myself a good 5-6 times. Admin does not care about students and is willing to turn a blind eye to the bullying that often runs unchecked at this school. When I was a senior a group of boys took a photo of a girl they didn't like, filmed themselves pissing on it, and posted it all over social media. They faced no repercussions. There was an other incident where another boy told a gay student that he should be put to death, and when they gay student reported it admin did nothing because "being gay is against student handbook rules". I don't have time to go through all the messed up things I witnessed at HC, but that's barely scratching the surface. This school destroyed my teenage years and I still feel its effects years after the fact. I feel like this school took something from me that I'll never get back- be that innocence or the ability to trust others. And since this is a review, what about this place's academics? They're bad. Like really, really bad. I still can't to math above basic algebra and I basically had to reteach myself US and world history because they teach such a small, biased view of the subject. Mr. Harmon is not a good history teacher- he only cares about teaching the side of history he believes in. He's also extremely racist and singles out students of color, often to make racist jokes about them on the daily without regard for said students' comfort on the matter. The Bible curriculum is also trash. I love Christianity and the Bible, but once again, this school teaches a small version of Christianity that is simply ahistorical. The version of Christianity taught at this school is almost heretical. Don't get me started on Chapel. Some of the most horrific things I hard at that school were said by guest speakers in Chapel, probably because I later learned that their screening process was basically nothing. We had a couple speakers show up either drunk or high (I'd honestly say those were the most entertaining). Things were so bad that by my senior year I learned to "fall asleep standing up with my eyes open" during Chapel. I thought this was a fun trick at the time, but I've since learned what I was experiencing was dissociation. Since leaving HC I've gone on to have significant mental health issues, the worst of which being Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. This disorder affects almost every aspect of my life, and while I'm in therapy and working to get better, that does not change the fact that HC did this to me. Living with the fact that I will never receive justice for what happened to me eats me alive. But, the best I can do is try and help people not make the same mistakes my parents did. So, if you're still reading this, I beg you, do not send your child to Houston Christian High School. It's not worth it. read more

I would NOT recommend this school! I look back every day with regret that we ever enrolled our child here! We made a decision to enroll our kids in Christian schools, cause we never wanted to look back with the, "I wish I would have....". Now I am looking back wishing I would have sent her anywhere else! Not all students were treated the same, or according to same rules. Rules absolutely were NOT consistently applied. I felt it depended upon how much money a family gave "extra" to school. I caught school administrators in lies a number of times. I saw so much swept under the rug, or inconsistent application of their LARGE handbook of rules, when my daughter was attending there. The rules were fine, they just chose not to apply them consistently, and thus my daughter ended up in an environment I very much was trying to avoid by placing her there. Honestly, the students went out of their way to break rules, cause they knew for the most part they were not going to be help accountable to them. So sad! They also claim to be a "Christian" establishment, but very loosely (cafeteria style) adhere to Christian principles. Too much caving to popular Worldy fads! And, adding insult to injury, not all teachers are professing Christians. This place needs to loose CHRISTIAN from their title, cause they are fraudulently using it in their name. read more

I recently graduated from Houston Christian High School. I transferred from Strake Jesuit College Preparatory between my freshman and sophomore year. Without a doubt, I can say this school is a disaster. The administration is incredibly hypocritical. A handful of students are terrible people. The school employs a handful of ill-equipped teachers, but the majority of the staff is kind and eager to teach. The only reason I give this review more than one star is thanks to the Theatre Department. Bobby Linhart, the director of the Theatre Department as of 2020, is incredible. I was the lighting-designer for the department from 2018 to 2020. I sincerely miss the atmosphere Bobby Linhart created. If your child is worried about entering high school, I implore you to encourage him or her to join the Theatre Department or any part of the Fine and/or Performing Arts program. All of the friendships I made during my time at HC were through this program. All of the students who participate in the musicals, plays, etc. are kind, generous, and incredible. Students have passed a culture of acceptance and encouragement down through the classes for over a decade. If you consider your child to be an "outcast" or awkward, please make sure your child joins the Performing Arts program at Houston Christian. Overall, the school is a disaster. Racism, sexism, homophobia, and intolerance run rampant through the halls of this school. If you are considering sending your child to this school, PLEASE reconsider. read more

I am a Student that currently attends HCHS. I learned about this school at HSES. I am glad that I am a Student here because of the Sense of community. The only thing I would warn others about is the English II Reg. class. If you go to this school during your sophomore year, take English II Honors. There is a much bigger workload from English II regular compared to English II Honors. I do not know how this is possible. This school year, there Is a new Dean. Dean Prince, Prince Dean, Prince, whatever you want to call him, he is perfectly fine with it. I would recommend this school to anyone interested in sports because the way this school's schedule works allows any student to participate in up to 3 sports that wants to. There is also a New Head of School, so if anyone had any problems with any previous Head of School, there is no longer any problem regarding that Head. I would also recommend this school to anyone interested in Fine Arts because you are able to take 2 Fine Arts and Participate in up to 3 sports, all in one school year. All in all, I would recommend this school who needs a sense of community or is looking for a smaller class size. read more

This review is only for the sports facilities, we don't have kids in this school. My son had a lacroose tournament at this location and I was amazed at the sports areas. First they have an actual lacroose/soccer field, complete with covered benches, scoreboard and everything. This might not seem like a big deal, except that most of our games are spent in folding chairs on the side line with no idea what the score is! read more

After researching and visiting 6 schools, we chose Houston Christian for our son. And let me tell you - BEST decision ever! Here's why: ***Small class sizes. He has classes from 8 kids up to 14 kids in a classroom. And the kids don't just sit at their seats, staring blankly at a teacher who teaches. They are up, moving around the classroom, and can often be found sitting outside in the courtyard with their teachers for class. It is truly an interactive environment, which my son loves! ***No bullying. This is a big deal for students these days. And the fact that there are so few discipline problems, and no bullying issues in the four years we've been on campus, is amazing. It truly is a loving environment, where the kids really want to be at the school. *** Top notch education. My son has been challenged for all 4 years, and is currently applying to Ivy League schools along with other top-tier schools across the nation. The teachers actually CARE about the kids - both in and out of the classroom. *** Fantastic sports programs. My son has been able to play three varsity sports, which he would've been hard-pressed to do at any other school in town. The fact that HC students can balance a tough academic load along with top sports, is a testimony to the school. Part of it is thanks to the block-scheduling. With only 4 classes each day, students can find time for many extracurricular activities. *** Christian foundation. If I'm going to pay the money for any school in Houston, I realize I wanted to choose one where my son would be getting an amazing foundation of faith, character and values. He is strong in his beliefs and has turned in to a fantastic Christian leader, yet another reason we are so thankful we chose Houston Christian. I have a child that currently attends Houston Christian and I have to say that it is the biggest regret that I have in their educational experience. In the less than 2 years that my child has attended, there have been 2 sex scandals, one of which was public and in the news and there has been an incredible amount of turnover in the teaching staff. At one point my child went almost 2 months without a teacher in one of their classes because they abruptly quit and the school was forced to fill that spot with a completely unprepared substitute. Another one of my child's teachers wrote a social media post about their sexual desires toward a student and continued to teach there despite the administration being aware of this. Furthermore, the school is very intolerant of students that don't hold their views on politics and religion. I am only keeping my child enrolled there because they have made friends and are doing well academically and I don't want them to change schools this late into their high school years. I would strongly recommend not sending your child to this school. read more

My daughter is a transfer this year starting her junior year. HC has been the most wonderful experience. The staff, students, teachers, and coaches are simply wonderful. My daughter is the happiest Ive seen her in years. Coming from a huge public high school, she was good academically but lost in the social life. I truly thought that's just how it is. I know realize how wrong I was. She is excelling in academics, making new friends, and prepping for college. As a former student of this school, I can say without a doubt that there is a sense of privilege in the faculty/staff, administration, students, and parents. Not everyone is entitled to this at this school. Psychological trauma that I now have to deal with as an adult came as a result from traumatic events in the school. First though, school policy and operations have led to the following: There was a major scandal the year after I left in which some of the faculty were found to not have proper certifications to teach in the state after a parent hired a private investigator to investigate one of the teachers. Athletics are seriously lacking, but that may be more of a product of private schools competing against other private schools. Academics are set to an unusual grading scale that cannot possibly aid the student a the learning environment. Fine arts are incredibly censored, totally missing the point of what art is and how it relates to education. If you are of any denomination other than Baptist (I was raised Methodist,) be ready to learn only about that denomination and what is wrong with your denomination. As for personal issues the following were experiences at the school: A night before a review game, I studied so hard that the next day I was answering every question correctly before anyone else in the class. After a few rounds, the class and the teacher told me that I could not participate because I was doing too well. Now tell me, how does that make your child feel about themselves? Not good is the correct answer. In the school yearbook (2001-2002,) I was left out for reasons that were not made known to me and was not refunded the money I spent for a yearbook. Above all of this, I was attacked in the hallway by another student for making a comment about him tucking his shirt into his underwear. After being forced to sit through my World History class with my attacker, I went and spoke to the principal at the time, Dr. Estes. The student was put in ISS for a week and then released back into the school. The next year, that same student who attacked me in the hallway was expelled from the school in a football hazing incident that resulted in a freshman being left on the street next to the school totally naked. Had the school dealt with the student in an appropriate manner, I feel that that freshman would have not had to deal with that traumatic event. If you have suffered from any traumatic events relating to Houston Christian High School, be aware that the statute of limitations in the state of Texas runs out two to four years after any sort of legal recourse relating to psychological and/or sexual trauma. Delayed discovery of these problems also has some limits on it as well. So, all in all, this is place is not a college prep school or really a school. It is a religious organization that has chapel once a week that thinks that education should be privatized and turned into a profit. And that, my friends, is even more dangerous. No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. Matthew 6:24 On a separate note, and something that I think is incredibly important to a school campus is there is NO SCHOOL COUNSELOR. Our daughter is a 10th grade transfer student who came from another well-known private school in town. Houston Christian has been a great fit for her. As a transfer student, she was welcomed with open arms and easily assimilated to HCHS. Our biggest hesitation about changing schools was that we didn't want our daughter to go "downstream" in terms of the curriculum and academic strength and vigor. Thankfully we've found the academics to be just as challenging as her prior school, and she is taking pre-AP classes that are the right fit and level. Probably our favorite thing about HCHS is the culture - there are no "groups" like her prior school, and we haven't found the school to be "clique-y"; a very welcome change! read more

Houston Christian has been an outstanding experience our family and our two sons who have now graduated from Houston Christian. The academic rigor they went through at HC prepared them well for their college careers. Both sons participated and took advantage of the leadership programs and extracurricular offerings that HC provides. They were pushed by the faculty to take chances and learn what worked for them and what didn't. Because of the size of the school, they were afforded opportunities to try different clubs and activities, not having to focus on only one sport or one area for their entire high school years. A school that does not live by Christ's message of forgiveness. They also have a blind eye when it comes to bullying. Many of the teachers there care but the administration does not. What rules apply to some students, do not apply to others and honesty is not the best policy when asked a question by the administration. They have shown that those students that lie can get away with breaking the rules and those that admit to a misstep are punished much too harshly. If you want your child to have a good Christian education, you should look elsewhere. read more

Having worked at other area preparatory high schools in the Houston area, Houston Christian is dynamic when it comes to leadership and encompassing faith in all areas of education - whether it be athletics or the arts. The leadership program by far is the most extensive I have seen. It is well received by HC students, many even consider it their favorite class. Five different dimensions of leadership are taught, backed up by activities that create an environment that allows them to utilize the leadership training they have been taught, including an opportunity to lead a workshop on leadership to their peers. HC students come away more confident, prepared to serve, and stand firm in their beliefs. Schools from across the country request information from HC on how to begin their own leadership program which is quite impressive. As a Christian school, Bible is a mandatory course and is well received by students as well. Not only are the students given knowledge of the Bible, they are also trained in other areas of academics, athletics and the arts to put this knowledge into action in everything that they do - being the hands and feet of Christ. With an exceptional Chapel program led by two chaplains, the spiritual program is by far the best I have seen. This is so important for young people today. read more

Someone with a heart for the souls of those students needs to take the scales off their eyes and look at the message HCHS is sending these teens about Christianity, Instead of empowering students in the faith, they are turning them off and away from Christianity and a God who treats the "bad souls" with disdain instead off lovingly drawing them to Himself. Many, many students are thankful to be rid of the religion taught and exemplified at HCHS as they go out into the world after graduation. I hope HCHS knows that as many as they think they have helped, they have also hurt as many and have made it hard to convince those students that the true God of the Bible is not potraited accurately by HCHS. read more

This has been a great school for our sophomore. At parent night we were thoroughly impressed with every teacher. There are great extra curricular activities -she's in choir, theatre, and swimming. As we were choosing between sending our kids to public school or sacrificing and sending our kids to HC, the word that kept coming to mind was "shine." Where would our kids have the chance to stand out, to shine? Hands down, HC. Our children have had so many opportunities that would not have come their way in a larger school, and we are eternally grateful. The teachers, faculty and staff are vested in the kids here. They know them by name. They want to know what they are interested in, and what their future goals are.
