Having lectured at and worked with students from Texas State San Marcos, I definitely think that this is a top-dollar value for those looking to get a 4-year degree. Their programs in communications, business, physical therapy, and geology/geography are particularly well thought of. I can't speak to the housing situation, but the campus itself is beautiful, with the hilly terrain, well landscaped areas, and the San Marcos river itself. And yeah, while it does have a rep as a party school, so does UT at Austin, and that doesn't seem to hurt anything. (grin!) If you're a parent considering this school for your kids, it's worth a visit at the very least.

It's been great thus far. The campus is nice with little animals everywhere and the river to swim in after or before class. Take your change of clothes. The parking for non residents is so far that is my only complaint. read more

Attended 2021-2023. The only positive thing I have to say about this university is that the campus is beautiful. They charge students to blink here. Parking tickets, paid garage parking if you don't have time to take a bus across town to get to the campus and hike to class. When I was attending, the construction was so bad on the roads I popped a tire on a rock and was stranded for 4 hours. Professors are absolutely terrible. They are condescending and rude. The course work is absolutely ridiculous across majors, a lot of professors don't clearly define projects but then grade you as if they did. Healthcare Administration program professors mock students and spread misinformation, try to make students fearful of their future careers and financial courses are useless to the job, an old man talking about his "knowledge" about healthcare finances. Required reading: the book he wrote. Project management course, I worked on a commercial for the school, professor took off points because she didn't like the commercial and said it wasn't "relevant" to healthcare administration because I didn't include stock images of an administrative job. I had to call professors out regularly for their unethical and insufficient grading. All of this during my two years there, and I had at least two professors openly mock me as if I was dumb. The last straw was them telling me to work 40 hour weeks in residency that I had to secure from their "approved list" with no pay or promise of a job in the end. Changed my major the next week. One professor told me I would be "working at McDonald's" if I changed my major and another mocked a response I had to the lesson in a sarcastic tone both in front of the class. I felt totally embarrassed and absolutely alone, overworked and overwhelmed while attending this school. I wish I could get my money and time back from this university, but in the very least have my degree that I worked so hard for. One psychology History & Theory course in particular held me back from graduating because professor gave over 100 assignments during the semester and took off points because she didn't agree with your opinions, on opinion based assignments. Begged her and asked what I could do to bring my grade up multiple times during the semester and she refused consistently and failed me in the end. Tail end of COVID. $1000 to retake the course. I spent more time trying explain myself to these professors than I ever should have as a college student, it's their job to grade properly and set students up for success, instead they use their position to bully students. They withheld my degree over this one class and the professor has been poorly reviewed for years! Over 120 credit hours earned and thousands of dollars, please send me my diploma! read more
The only knock I have against TXST's NSO is the king hike from the parking garage to the new student center for the orientation. In this Texas heat, that was a bit inconsiderate. That aside, the new student orientation was very well organized and seamless!! I loved that they had incoming freshman partner up as roommates for the two day event. And upper classmates were everywhere assisting and directing during the event. Breakout sessions were informative and interactive which is a huge plus in my book. Students with registration holds were allowed to resolve them during the event and were offered assistance. The kids got to sample what their next four years would be like on campus. A huge benefit for kids traveling away from home for the first time read more

If I could give them zero stars, I would. This year was my first year at Texas State, and my experience with going to Texas State was awful. I moved to Chautauqua Hall in October and thought my roommate and I would have a good year. It was the complete opposite. My roommate would let people spend the night in our room without my permission, which could be up to one to five people. She would let friends access our closet and even close the curtains. When I would go into the closet afterward, I would notice that my things would be around, or a friend would move stuff around on my closet shelf to make room for their items. There also were times when her guest felt comfortable utilizing my side of the room to store their stuff and even leave food and drinks on my furniture (This is the item that I brought from home). She and her friends would come during quiet hours, and it would be loud, and it could be on a school night. She would also Turn on lights, blasting loud music, make a bunch of noises, and bring friends in. She would also let a guy stay in the room and spend the night and would even do sexual things while she was asleep, and she would even leave for 30-45 minutes without the boy. She gives people her keys to let them come in and out of our room as they please; there's also a cleanliness problem with my roommate. Drinking and smoking would occur as well, and it would be constantly to break our roommate agreement and housing policies and rules. Even the day she moved out, she told me to leave while she packed to move because she could control herself with me now in the room, and she moved her and mom's damaged property in a week. I have spoken to the RA, the RD, and housing, and they are fully aware of the situation but have decided to take their precious time with this situation. Their only resolution was for me to move campus into a different building with an ant and mold problem, not to mention I have a single mother with an autistic brother who we just recently found has an enlarged heart with scarring in it. We have mentioned our situation to them but didn't get any resolution other than me moving out. I don't have any friends I know here, and not only that, I was going to get an upcharge of $3000 to my bill for them to put in a single room. UPD is very disrepestful as well and no help.I want to warn other people about the housing issues that Texas state. read more

My perspective is a bit different from everyone else's, but Texas state is the worst school I have been to, and I have been to 5 schools. The most inconsiderate people I have come across in my life, after being to over 30 countries, have been at this school. Both faculty and student body alike. First they tried to deny me residence even though I am legally a resident, they tried to make me pay more for tuition (out of state) just because I lived over seas. I did IB, not AP, and international program and there was ZERO consideration for that. My first 30 minutes on campus a group of students in a red truck drove by my friend and I screaming slurs and curse words at us before speeding off. The dorms are terrible, I have been in most and they are very bad quality. The school also secretly went into my laptop, after gaining access to my info through wifi connection, and proceeded to ban me from the wifi network because I had a pirated movies downloaded on my laptop before I ever even got to the school. None of their business considering it is tolerated in the country I JUST came from. There is also ZERO diversity on this campus. I came from a school where my friends were ALL from different countries, some even mixed race from different countries. Here, I only see black and white. There is zero diversity from other countries, only American, no foreign students, and for good reason because those students would hate America if they went to this school. There is nothing to do nearby the campus, only bars that half the student population can't even get into because they're underaged. The parking is the absolute worst here. It is god awful and a damn shame how badly they're taking advantage of all of these broke college students. I left my truck in the same place for 3 days in a spot I wasn't allowed to park in, because paying 480 dollars for a parking pass to park outside of MY OWN HOUSING is absolutely absurd to say the least. Highway robbery, and a legal scam. I racked up tickets, never getting emails saying I got tickets, until I conveniently went to go to my truck after not driving for three days to go on a 2 hour drive to see my father before he left the country for 2 months, and I come to find out with zero warning I had been booted. 400 dollars in tickets and a booting fee. Making me late by two hours, because it was a 20 minute walk to the parking services office in Texas heat, and then a 20 minute walk back. Not to mention the ridiculous walking times in horrid daytime heat. Outlook and canvas are the most unusable platforms I HAVE EVER come across, and there was no explanation as to how to use it. I also tested positive for antigens, which does not mean I have active covid, they wouldn't let me on campus for 10 days because of it, and I never even actually had covid. They couldn't even afford PCR tests, so they just bought antigen tests in large quantities from CVS. The exact same kit. Then, I missed classes because of this since I missed the first week of school, and my teachers temporarily dropped me from their classes because of "attendance" when I let them all know I was out for "covid". The dorms also ALWAYS smell like weed and tobacco, its a sickening smell to have to walk out into the hallway every morning and smell this, the students can't even be considerate enough to use a odorless dap pen, they have to smoke the literal plant in their rooms. And nothing is ever done about this. I also got a package shipped from a friend, and they LOOKED IN THE PACKAGE, and shipped it back. Then I got a letter in its place from the school saying why. Completely illegal. They aren't the police, they have zero jurisdiction over ME, MY STUFF, OR WHAT I DO. This school is an absolute nightmare. If you're international, forget it, don't even bother, if you insist on going to Texas for uni go to St. Andre or University of Texas at Austin. DO NOT go to Texas state. I wanted to go to this school to save money for my parents, and then transfer somewhere better. But to be honest, this school has completely discouraged me from the college experience. The insanely high acceptance rate shows too, not very high level of education, and too many people who don't care about their education at all. They just go to the lowest tier parties I have ever seen instead. The one good thing I have too say about this school is my RA was very kind to me, and she seems like a really good person. Other than that, terrible school, its ran like a business, a place to get money, not a place to learn. It is safe to say I will be dropping out soon ,or taking a gap year and going to another college overseas or elsewhere in America, the amount of stress this school has caused me makes me sick. read more
(Disclaimer: this review is solely based on a campus tour.) I visited this school with my sister and in the beginning I was hoping the campus would give me that WOW-factor which it didn't. At the time, my sister was interested in the nursing program which we learned from the campus tour, the nursing program itself is located at a different campus. The campus staff was very nice, but didn't know what they were talking about, instead they showed us a slideshow of dorms and admission, however they didn't know a lot of information about transfer students. Now, they had a lot of information for freshmen students, in which, they seem to cater more to, but for transfer students they didn't have transfer scholarships and all the scholarships were based off of SAT scores and top of the high school class, not good for non-traditional students. Every question I had about transfer students, the staff always responded with an, "uh, I'm not sure", even the admission counselor was completely dumbfounded. However, the campus itself has a lot of stairs, most of the building aren't appealing, I understand that coming to school for aesthetics isn't a main concern for most people, but for me it is and if everything looks dull - I can easily get bored with it. Moreover, it mostly reminded me a bigger version of San Jacinto College - South campus. The campus does lack that scenic vibe and I understand the staff does say there's a lake on campus, running through the campus, but it isn't actually - more like off-grid. School spirit wasn't booming and the traditions didn't catch my interest. My sister on the other hand, didn't seem as if she enjoyed the school either. The tour was short and we didn't view all of the buildings. Oh and the layout - when driving to the campus tour was confusing. No signs or simple directions on how to get to the building. read more

Quite honestly they lie about caring for their students. Financial aid refuses to process independent students and gives you a timeline and lies about the timeline over and over until they drop you from classes because you can't afford to drop 1200$ at an instant for your tuition. Fees added into your bill are a violation of my rights to choose what I spend money on. All around unpleasant as hell and I haven't even started classes yet. Everyone who works in the business office and financial aid has been completely pathetic at helping a self supporting, independent student who barely affords to feed herself. I will be doing a deep probe and finding out who needs a job and who does not here. read more

absolutely terrible school. no teachers. old equipment. they make me pay $580 to take an internship that's required for my degree. why do i have to form out that much money to do an internship that they don't even help me find? I'm not using any Tx state facilities because I'm 4 hours away and I still have to pay that much. just another way for them to scam me and other students (who are already in debt) for more money. but I have no other choice but to fork out the money or else I don't get a degree. absolute scam read more

This is a brutally honest review of this university that I don't feel is biased in any way. I transferred to Texas State University from Texas Tech University two years ago and am currently employed by the University so I feel very justified in the review that I am about to give. As a student, I have never experienced such unprofessional professors who do not care about their student's success or how their classrooms are managed. So far, I haven't had a professor that made any sort of lasting impact. Classes have been cancelled due to protests in the quad that the majority of students and even some professors want to attend, rather than teach. Professors have not shown up to office hours to go run personal errands, leaving multiple students waiting in the hall way just to have to leave without getting any help. My family and I pay very good money to attend this university and there has been dozens of instances where my lectures have been cancelled due to political discourse and personal errands on campus that professors and TAs would rather attend. On that note, the political issues on this campus are OUT OF CONTROL. There are protestors chaining themselves to our statues and staying out there for well over a week shouting at people, using the restroom in buckets, and acting just straight up crazy. There are multiple extremist pastors from different churches that come and stand in our quad shouting racist, homophobic, and hateful things at students who walk by. It is vulgar, inappropriate, and instigates many fights and protests, which interrupts classes and causes deeper issues. Both right and left wing extremists have made the campus unbearable to live on. From a pre-med student standpoint, the advisors here have no desire to actually have their students get to medical school. They advise students to cram their semesters full of 18 hours of STEM classes without regard to keeping their GPAs up. None of the pre-med / pre-pharmacy advisors are actual doctors or pharmacists or have even attended professional graduate programs. I am a biochemistry major and my advisor was an English major who is trying to instruct me on how to go through my career. I have transferred out of the university to the University of Texas system because my schedule that was created for me by my advisors had me taking classes in two different cities an hour apart during peak traffic hours and only thirty minutes apart. As an employee of the university, I have never been happier at a company. The Student Health Center is such a home to me and is so caring towards all of their patients and employees. They are extremely inclusive, reliable, and willing to help any of their employees. There are events for staff to bond and to grow closer as a group with a mutual goal. I've had the honor of being both a patient and an employee and both sides of the spectrum are awesome. It is super affordable and is a judgement free zone. I am incredibly sad to leave my current position and will miss it dearly. read more

Please read the following email sent this morning Just going to inform you that this email is full of complaints and issues but honestly I have never really had a positive experience with TXST Financial aid office. I'm going to attempt to ask a question that you are probably going to refuse to answer but I'm going to try anyway (because I'm a glutton for brick walls). IF he accepts the loan awards that he was offered will that cease any grants from being added to his award package to aid him in paying for his tuition this semester? He says that he was advised not to accept any awards until his appeal process (verification paperwork, parent statement, etc.) was complete because that would essentially lock awards for this academic year. T/F? Since he was advised accordingly (by both an academic advisor and financial aid), he is now in a bind because he has no money to hold his classes with ( either borrowed or personal) and was told this morning that even IF he elected to accept his award today, it still would not process in time to ensure enrollment in his classes for the fall? T/F? The advisement staff on this campus have fallen short of the mark on this one. Undergrad finances (in my experience through my university alma mater and alma maters of my colleagues) are never an issue. There is so much money available for undergrad degrees for families with household income less then 100,000 annual that it is beyond my understanding as to why we have to battle (literally, to the point that this office makes attempts to make me correct boxes on an already filed and accepted by the IRS, income tax return!) EVERY semester for financial aid. These are Grad school finance problems! Only when seeking a graduate degree does "free" money become scarce. TXST may be a public university but your policies and operations are aligned as a private university. At this point I am just trying to get my son to complete the time and energy he has invested here. Its too bad that when he does FINALLY complete his studies and graduate there will be no love or allegiance to this campus. Just so long and good riddance! Furthermore, I am requesting the name and contact information for the individual that leads this department. In a day and age where so many campuses are offering a "free" undergrad degree, the stress that we have experienced every year since he started here seems highly unnecessary and honestly almost discriminatory. However, I don't know the personal testimonies of others on campus. I do know that I will always share mine. read more

The Texas state geography department is absolutely wonderful. Professors are highly qualified and care for their students. It seems everyone in this department is always willing to help. My negative experiences with professors have always been outside of the geography department. Beautiful campus too. I love that I've had so many classes incorporate the river into our lessons. Can't wait to graduate May 2019. read more

I've been at this University for almost 3 years now. It has some pros, and some serious cons. Pros: The campus is lovely and easy to navigate. The professors and services are student-centered The Liberal Arts, Sciences, and Education programs are state of the art and well known nationally (yeah Geography!) The Facilities vary widely in quality, but the student center, rec center, and several other buildings are state of the art and beautiful. Cons: If you are like me and don't like drinking or partying, you will have very, very few friends and very, very little to do. If you are a good student, you will feel pretty alienated and end up doing more than your share of work in group projects (as in 100% of it). The students in general are immature, narrow minded, and lazy. The professors give extra credit and easy exams, grade inflation is a major issue, leading to a degree that is less valuable. Its located in San Marcos. There is very little vegetarian food on or near campus. It isn't a very good research institution overall, but some departments are top notch. The Frat scene is completely out of control (I lived on "Ragewood" for over a year...) The clubs that do exist typically have around 10 members and rarely if ever have social events. If I could redo my college choice it wouldn't of been Texas State. If you are at all introverted, uninterested in parties, or interested in challenging yourself academically, this simply isn't the University for you. read more
Atmosphere? You mean constant rotating freshmen? If you're going for a post-post secondary degree, you'll be miserable. Everyone is 12 and you feel even older. It's hot, and a long walk to anywhere near campus for commuters. Screw class if it's raining, you'll be drenched. It's a hikers paradise, everything is an uphill climb, steps and staircases are everywhere. Traffic is awful. Teachers, don't really seem to care. And too many write their own books you have buy, and can't resell. Graduation rates: 4-Year Graduation Rate: 27% 6-Year Graduation Rate: 56% That's awful. Not that I care, but it's a smoke free campus. Freshman girls fall into 3 categories: 1. neon-bike-shorts-tank-top-flip-flop-causing-plantar-fasciitis-non-support-giving-messy-took-30-minutes-to-look-like-this-high-on-the-head-ponytail-with-somehow-still-in-place-although-it's-102-degrees-outside-perfect-makeup TX State girl. 2. The how-the-hell-are-you-climbing-this-campus-in-heels-jeans-and-why-the-hell-are-you-wearing-a-long-sleeve-cardigan-it's-100-degrees-how-the-hell-are-you-not-sweat-soaked-and-how-is-your-hair-not-a-frizzy-mess TX State girl. 3. The Northface wearing crowd. It's a huge movement. These people wear Under Armour in the summer. 4. The vocal fry-scoop-scoop-baby-talk-sexy-voice-vocal fry-like I use "like" too much girls. (Note: sometimes these girls are one the first two girls also.) 5. The I-talk-really-loud-on-my-phone-because-I'm-so-important-and-so-is-every-mundane-conversation-I-have. (Note: these girls are also the first two, and ALWAYS are also the 4th girl.) On a final note, I've been to 3 universities in my time, and never have a seen some many students not dying to get off campus. The students here just freaking LOVE hanging out on campus. In bikinis, speedos, and board shorts, on empty lawns beside even the smallest amount of water. I just don't get it. THIS IS A PARTY SCHOOL. NOT AN ACADEMIC ONE. read more

You know that feeling when you really need to pee? Well, for children of the 1990's and 2000's we were told that in order to succeed in life you needed a college degree. Didn't matter what kind (within reason) but life didn't start until you got it. Texas State knows this, and since their conversion from Southwest Texas State University, they have turned a previously student centered institution into one of commercial success with an emphasis on the business end. In other words, they act like the college experience is a four year long need to pee. From the on campus living to the ridiculous excuse for a student government (all frat boys/sorority girls) the focus is NOT on research, but on graduation quotas. Just like public high schools in the state of Texas. It is not quality, but it gets the job done. Problem is, once you have the degree, you look back and wonder if you could have done it better. Had you held out (it) just a bit longer, you might have gone to (in) a nicer place. PROS: Beautiful San Marcos campus (when there isn't construction) WONDERFUL History and Mass Communications Departments w/ PhD holding faculty who believe in mentoring while teaching. On a hill, so there is zero city traffic. Also near the river, which fills with college girls in the Spring/Summer. Always nice... CONS: Easy admission standards, seriously easy. , Idiots are everywhere, generally distinguishable by their backward hats or loud, inappropriate bragging in the presence of faculty. Oddly, this is socially accepted. They allow on campus soliciting from off campus vendors, meaning you WILL be harassed EVERY class day. This increases every semester. They don't accept a lot of transfer credits, even from nearby Austin Community College. They will also LIE about this in order to encourage you to transfer, so do your research. I'll always cherish my time at Texas State University, but it's not worth the same price of tuition as The University of Texas. read more

Let me start by saying the teachers on this campus are amazing. The issues they have is the Round Rock location is considered the ugly step sister ! I got recruited from ACC North Campus with a list of services Texas State offers their students. They didn't state none of those services are in Round Rock. I got offered a work study scholarship. I applies to the 3 jobs they had, but my hours didn't work for them. San Marcos although had over 28 jobs being offered to the students. Over an hour and a half from where I live. So if you don't live in San Marcos or are a returning students who has to work, this is not the school for you !! read more

My son and I went from Houston To visit Texas State University for their prospective student "bobcat day". We registered in advance and scheduled sessions from 9 AM to 2 PM. But when we arrived, there was no signage anywhere or guides telling parents where to park or where to go. Parents and students were wandering around aimlessly looking for where to go for the program. Even though we arrived over 30 minutes early we were more than 30 minutes late by the time we figured out where we should be. Once we arrived at the registration building it was one huge chaotic mess! There was a school representative, a woman, who was standing in the lobby screaming at the top of her lungs without a microphone or megaphone nobody could hear her and there were people packed in and wandering around without any sense of purpose or direction, Because like us, they didn't know where to go. For a school that is trying to woo you into attending, I was thoroughly disgusted and underwhelmed. How is the school going to teach my son to be organized when the University itself is so completely and utterly disorganized! I decided I was not going to trust my sons education to Texas State University and we left immediately. read more
Review is for prospective parent student campus tour only. This was my 10th tour with my daughter covering schools in Texas, California, Washington and Nevada. This is by far the worst and totally unprofessional and unappealing for a parent. I cant believe a school of 36,000 students has such an unimpressive presentation. It includes a brief slide show, with pictures of dorms (comment we wont show you these) the student rec center (comment- they do their own tour we wont go there) honors program facts (comment, if you score below national average on the SAT and keep a 3.2 GPA your in our honors program) The student who gave the presentation- says, last semester I screwed up and slept during registration so I missed out on some classes I wanted, but we have free wifi at the river park so thats cool. I get it its a party school but seriously sad to see tax dollars support such a lame presentation. The administrator for the campus tours needs to wake up. read more

Felt like I was still in high school. Kids are constantly talking when the professor is lecturing- it's ridiculous. I was there for a year and only really enjoyed one class. I just feel like no one really takes it seriously and it's just a big joke. I'm sure the higher level classes may not be the same but the atmosphere is just not good. Parking is horrible. At freshman orientation we had the sheriff talk to us and he told us not to leave our beer bottles out on anyone's yard. Yes, underage drinking happens and it's inevitable but that was so out of line and inappropriate. I would never recommend this school to anyone. read more
Eat 'Em Up Cats!!!! I graduated from Texas State a whopping NINE years ago (oh.mah.gawd.........it feels like only yesterday) and my experience here was life changing. I honestly dont even know where or how to review this school so I will start with the ONE negative and that is the sports scene. Here in Texas, we all know that football is king and the sports department is ummmm how shall we say it...lacking. I honestly think that if Texas State had a halfway decent football team that was in the Big 12 or SEC people would start to show my alma mater more love. It's sad but true. Now, as far as academics are concerned, perhaps this is not the school you want to attend if you have aspirations to become an engineer or vet (go to A&M) but there are some pretty amazing degrees that you can obtain here. Ah yes, lets also not forget that a former PRESIDENT of the United States graduated from Tx State! I loved everything about living San Marcos as well. The scenery here is absolutely stunning----from the gorgeous and fragile eco system found in the San Marcos river to the seemingly endless amazing summer days floating the Blanco River from 101 to Dons. Meandering down Belvin street gawking at all the beautiful victorian mansions or going on a Sunday drive up the devils backbone. The landscape is spectacular but the people are just as beautiful...like seriously I was jaded by all the pretty people that reside here. Not only is most everyone here appeasing to the eye but I met some pretty awesome folks here who pretty much catapulted my husband and myself into our careers and life outside college. Texas State University is a big school in small(ish) town that gives you the true "college experience". When my children get a little older I swear I will begin grooming them to obtain their higher education from this school. LOVE LOVE LOVE. read more

I fell in love with Texas State! It holds an amazing atmosphere, it's a small town with lots to do! It's awesome how it really does have the feel of a college town, yet we have two major cities right next to us (san antonio & austin) not even an hour away! I am not in a sorority or frat..I don't party all the time. That doesn't mean you'll be a loner!! I met my best friends here. It's a REALLY diverse campus so no matter what kind of person you are, there will be a place for you at TX state! I do admit though...parking sucks! read more

I have been going to this university since fall of 2007. I'm currently a masters student here. I also received my bachelors degree here. So, I think I can provide a pretty good review of this university. So, here goes: The good: Texas State has a beautiful landscape. It really is one of the more scenic campuses I've seen. I've actually taken several photos and panoramas of this campus. Professors (generally speaking) are very student focused. Professors here WANT to see you succeed. The campus as a whole is student centered as well. There are many opportunities for campus events to increase your cultural awareness, and to network with others. I received my bachelors degree here in clinical laboratory science. Texas State is one of the few universities in Texas that offer this program. The program is very good, and the professors that teach it have even won awards and grants from some big name companies like Abbott. The chair of the program is (was?) the chair for the Texas Association of Clinical Laboratory Scientists (TACLS). There are many opportunities for student employment on campus. Texas State is the only university in Texas to have a former president for an alumni. Texas State also has a large number of Piper professors. Texas State has a diverse range of undergraduate majors. You don't have to buy your books on campus. There are several off campus sites, and you can purchase them online and other places as well, which is many times a HUGE discount over the campus bookstore prices. The technology available to students is fairly up-to-date. Texas State has a HUGE library which includes more than just books. You can even check out movies and DVD's. Off campus, there are many locally owned shops to shop and eat at. If you're the kind of person that likes to support local business, you'll be pleasantly surprised here. TONS of coffee shops, both local and chain within the city of San Marcos. As a GLBT person myself, I will say this campus was surprisingly GLBT friendly to me. There are several resources and groups available for GLBT students. (GLBT meaning gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender) Outside of campus though? Not so much. The campus is very accommodating to just about any kind of student or their needs. The not so good: Parking is HORRENDOUS. While they are working on a new "master plan" involving new construction and the addition of new parking garages, parking is still (and probably always will be) an issue, since the campus is land locked. The campus bus routes are sometimes long and inconvenient. The mentality of students--a lot of students dub this school a "party school" and in my opinion, do not have the college mentality one would expect from "adults". A lot of students come to class unprepared, do not read the materials, do not do the assignments, work in groups only to have the "overachiever" do all the work, ask ridiculously dumb questions in class, and whine and complain so professors extend deadlines. I think the professors need to be a bit stricter with students, and I think the students need to grow up and act like adults. If they continue to think this type of behavior is acceptable, they're going to be in a for BIG surprise when they hit the "real world". NO ONE in this town seems to be able to know how to drive! I've seen more accidents in this town and on campus due to wreckless student driving and/or drunk student driving than I have even in some larger cities. I don't know HOW many times I've nearly gotten into a wreck. Students don't seem to know the proper procedures for 4-way stops, they walk out into the middle of the road, they drive the wrong way down one-way streets when drunk (I've seen it first hand), they pull out in front of people, turn in front of oncoming traffic, etc. A lot of students here feel they have some sort of God given sense of entitlement. Working in a service industry off campus, I can tell you, some students are rude, are on their phone while ordering, and talk down to people. The fraternity/sorority wars. It's immature and stupid. Enough said. Many of them also have an elitist mentality which resembles the typical "popular kids" of high school. Most *mature* adults don't care about the greek letters after your name. Some even refer to non-greeks as "GDI's", which stands for "God damn independents". It's not a positive, endearing term. It's alienating. The campus isn't especially graduate student friendly. A lot of eateries are closed for night classes (which most grad students have). Parking is horrible for grad students because all lots become a free-for-all after 5pm. There aren't many graduate programs and even fewer Ph.D. programs. This university isn't really a research type of college. Dealing with ANYTHING regarding paperwork/administration or financial aid is a hassle. The hills. Oh..my..God..the hills! If you want some huge calves, come here! read more

PERSPECTIVE STUDENTS BEWARE!!!!! Perspective student make sure that you read ALL policies before you pay or agree to any contract. The administration is incompetent and find pleasure in being condescending and rude. Almost all departments are unorganized, but in this case residence life is the worst. Good Luck read more
I came here, got my degree and left. Now I am working full time in finance, and enjoying life. I had a great experience here and recommend this school to anyone. I don't agree how they say it's a big party school, yeah I did party but as much as any other student! I LOVED living on campus and walking to school, especially the nice little exercise we can get because the food on campus is so good I could have almost gained 50 pounds! read more

It was fun while I was here but I am glad to finally be finished. People will say its a party school but what college isn't. I enjoyed my time here and couldn't have seen myself anywhere else but here in the hill country. Be ready to walk or have another means of transportation because parking is a big pain. Also make sure to find a good academic advisor. read more

Parking is always a challenge but for the most part everything on campus is pretty easy too get to. We spend quite a bit of time in this area and love the great energy of the student body..........that sounded kind of creepy. read more

Alright so, I am a student at Texas State and I absolutely love it. The campus is beautiful and the people (generally) are very kind, and there is a little something for everyone. The education program is absolutely incredible. I also hear that we have a great business college and that the theater department is top notch. The town pretty much relies on the school and the school does its part to support the community. I will say that tx st is fairly frat driven but as someone who has been here for four years and has never been really bothered by it I dont think its that big of a deal. I truly love this school. I believe it to be student driven and I would recommend it to almost anyone. read more
Texas State is magical. From the caring professors, to the breathtaking landscape, to our award winning programs, Texas State has it all! Nestled in a jewel of a town, San Marcos, Texas State is the perfect distance from both Austin and San Antonio. San Marcos is large enough to house standard "Big Box Marts" (Wal Mart, Target, HEB) while also having that small town feel with dozens of home grown shops, eateries, and the best Outlet Mall in the country. If you don't like exercise, Texas State is not for you. The campus is in the smack dab of the largest hill in San Marcos and was placed there as a gift by the community back in 1899. With big name places on campus to chow down (like Pizza Hut, Einsteins Bagels, Starbux, Chick-fil-A, and Blimpie's (just to name a few)) you'll never go hungry. If you're even remotely considering Texas State, GO FOR IT. read more
I enjoyed my undergrad at Texas State. The rec center was a great place to workout, but on the opposite side of campus.I really enjoyed the effort my professors put into teaching classes. Parking services was never an enjoyable time, but what school has a friendly parking services? Grad school at Texas State is difficult and stressful, but worth every moment. If you are thinking of going to TSU, check it out. read more

I transfered to UT-Austin before graduating, but I missed TXState and San Marvelous when I left. I recommend this school to anyone interested in Business, my major. As a business owner, I'd gladly hire a qualified bobcat any day. My all-time favorite math teacher: Bandy, business calculus All-time favorite philosophy prof: Gordon Favorite Business prof at TXState: Dr. Bell I was proud of the grades I made in both my core and business classes. The staff and students here are amazing and understanding. I'm currently an international student from England, studying to become an elementary school teacher. They have made the entire process very smooth and simple for me! They offer so many services for students, including discounted medications, mental health services, disability services and also offer great councillors. I would highly recommend this college. I have greatly enjoyed my courses so far this semester read more

Just a comment about a review that I read about them catering for new freshman only. I agree with the reviewer that they need to place some emphasis or at least have campus tours catered for the transfer/non-traditional students. As a non-traditional, returning student, that was the sentiment that I have experienced when I first returned to Texas State to finish my bachelor's degree. I was given minimal departmental advising and left alone to figure out everything myself. Even though I've pull though with my degree due to persistence. It would have been helpful for them to advise me of the resources available to me without the expense of taking another class. Be warned that all students are required to take the University Seminar class (US1100) whether they are a freshman or transfer student. (There are two different versions of the class). This is a one hour (half semester class) that is supposed to inform you of the available resources at the University. You are also required to read and write an essay on a reading of the chosen book for the semester. (The "Common Experience" chosen topic, which changes every year.) That being said, I did enjoy my time here. The professors in my department (Computer Science) were helpful. I hope that you will find this helpful. read more

Texas State University - San Marcos looks like a great school from the outside. If you consider joining the Occupational Education Degree program, consider who you will have to deal with each semester before going this route. The problem is that the have the absolute worst person (Administrative Assistant) Patty Gibbs, doing all the important work for the students. What do I mean, she has a bad attitude. You don't know what her job is and she wont go out of her way to let you know who she can help you. One moment she acts like counselor, degrading you with comments, and the another, she is trying to send you off to someone else because she don't want to be bothered with you. Either she is over worked, or has been there to long and has a bad attitude. I think she is too comfortable in her job, and they let her get away with whatever she wants to do. I know this to be true because when I brought up an issue with her to an Advisor, they said Patty is Patty, and I will let her handle her area. When I told him she wouldn't take paper work that he told me to turn into her, there was nothing else said after that. When a college wants to enroll students into a program, you should have energetic, eager to help personnel interacting with the students. This person is like the front door, and the first impression sorta like. She is not this kind of person. You practically have to beg her to do anything for you. She doesn't respond back to you, and throws out unnecessary comments to try to belittle students. If she can get out of doing work for you, she will. Even her tone in her emails is of an elitist type attitude. I dread each semester just because I am forced to deal with her. There are so many other schools that offer good programs and this one as well. I recommend you look into those because college is hard and stressful enough. On a good note, Dr. Harkins and Professor Weathersby are good Advisors at Texas State University. Dr. Harkins especially will ensure you understand and are moving in the right direction. Texas State does not know what they have in an excellent employee as Dr. Harkins. Good luck read more

Texas State was the worst six years of my life. The only good thing about going to Texas State was experiencing God and His Love for me through His One True Church, the Catholic Church, and by the intercession of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary and that there were kind people who cared about me and accepted me. God is hated at Texas State, His rights and precepts are despised and ignored(except when a professor wants to attack it). Texas State, like many judaic-masonic colleges in the US, don't teach reality to their students. They teach them a nightmare and call it a utopia. I was part of the student body, but my voice was hardly ever valued, and was disdained by "open-minded" professors who themselves despised the truth. The feminism promoted at Texas State was not only false, since feminism is false always, it was annoying and obnoxious. Many of my psychology courses emphasized communist thinking by consistently bringing up race, class, and gender. Many of my philosophy and a few of my English courses were anti Catholic(I've sat in classes where the teacher blasphemed against God, Our Lady, the Saints, attacked Christians and the Holy Faith) Texas State made me more insecure than I was about myself. I felt that I had to be someone else. What I learned and discovered about going to Texas State was that I did not belong there and that it wasn't for me. I didn't fit in at all with what Texas State valued, and ultimately that's a good thing. However, since what I loved and valued was not taught there, it has set me back spiritually and psychologically. I suffered spiritually and psychologically by going to Texas State, but nobody cares. Much of time is now spent after looking and applying for jobs, learning about the Catholic Faith, harp playing, hand sewing, knitting, writing stories, poems, and proses, reading books that I actually want to read, transcribing, French, and healing spiritually and psychologically. Texas State ate me and spit me out. If you're Catholic, I don't recommend going to college, let alone Texas State. You're better off staying at home. read more

Bret Bryon, a lecturer at Org., Wkforce, and Ldrship Studies in the College of Applied Arts, in a DM he sent to a woman on Facebook Messenger: "Plastic and reconstructive surgeon...and leftist cunt. Fuck you. I hope Kristi Noem deports you, whore." This university continues to use vague wording saying he "no longer teaches classes" but refuses to definitively state that this monster has been terminated. We must assume that they still have him on the payroll somewhere and are doing what they can to support him while keeping the appearance to us that they are supporting the woman he said those words to. You know, stand behind the bigot while trying not to affect their revenue. YOU CAN'T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS. Prospective students and parents of prospective students: if this is what you want to represent your higher education and your reputation throughout your careers, while giving them tens of thousands of dollars, then you get what you deserve. In light of Rudy Martinez's racist opinion piece in the student newspaper and the Dean's slap-on-the-wrist response I am not inclined as a native Texan to send my children to this school. If the roles had been reversed, all manner of Hell would have rained down upon the author of such an opinion. As long as liberal progressives run our public institutions such tolerance of fascism parading as anti-fascism will continue to worsen. Clearly there is no limit to the moral relevancy of the Left. From his perspective violence, intimidation, and exclusion are justified. Using "repressive tolerance" (Herbert Marcuse, guru to 1960s radicals) against those he deems fascists, Rudy Martinez is creating his own Gleichschaltung. read more

this is a terrible university. do not go here. they accept way too many students, causing the campus to be overcrowded, and student services inefficient. financial aid, student business services and registrars office always have huge lines..cafeterias on campus are loud and obnoxious...and if u are a psych major, the staff at the psychology department do not know how to do their job; im sure people with down syndrome could do a better job. from what i have seen and heard, state universities suck. i believe it is worth spending extra money to go to a nice, small private school. it will be worth it in the long run. read more

Raymond Fisk won't clean up his mess and finish murdering his niece. it seems his Texas State University state of mind has him believing that all his used victims die of starvation after he rips their wallet, but some of us are left to sit in it.
