With its chintzy decor, out of date muzak and home printed menus, Thai Classic certainly breaks the Whiteladies mould. This is not a generic 'stylish' bar, all leather and chrome. Despite the delicious cuisine Thailand and other South East Asian countries have to offer, they seem to be somewhat underrepresented on Bristol's restaurant scene. I have no doubt that Thai Classic passes under the radar of many,i which is a mistake indeed. The restaurant has a tranquil atmosphere unusual for the road on which it is situated, I can't exactly imagine it being overrun by stag and hen dos at the weekend. All the staff are Thai and it is clearly authentic down to the very last detail. The food is perhaps not the greatest I've ever tried, but the recipes were tasty and well-executed. Thai Classic certainly isn't new or modern, if anything it reminds me of restaurants how they used to be when I was a little kid being shepherded round oriental eateries by my parents. There's something very endearing about Thai Classic's little red neon archway leading you down into a little below ground restaurant. Inside is a very cosy little Asian eatery, specialising in Malaysian and Thai cuisine. There is an extensive menu for both, and also, set meals for each nationality of cuisine. I was particularly impressed by Thai set meal B, especially the garlicky pork dish. (to be honest I'm quite impressed by anything garlicky). I went to this restaurant last night with my sister. We were walking past it and saw they did vegetarian food (I'm vegan), and I had heard very good things about the place so we went in even though the look and atmosphere wasn't doing much for us. The staff were lovely and friendly and sat us at a nice and decent sized table even though there were only two of us which was nice, I hate being squashed up on a tiny table. I had to double check if anything on the menu was vegan. When I asked, the waitress looked at me like I was mad, she didn't really seem to know what I meant but just pointed at the menu and said "yes, you can order it!" We ordered the vegetarian set menu (£16 pp, minimum 2 people) and as I ordered I double checked with who seemed to be the manager if everything on the vegetarian menu was vegan, and she said "No! Oh, I'll go and check". She didn't seem to know what I meant. She never gave us the verdict so I assumed it was all good. The food was great, flavorsome with lots of textures and colour BUT the mushroom soup was definitely cooked with some kind of fish broth or fish sauce! Why was this dish on the vegetarian menu?? Don't order this if you're vegan/vegetarian, it was very fishy tasting. It was very delicious though and too late for me to send it back. The fact that I checked twice if it was vegan and then it wasn't is very dissapointing. Apart from that one hiccup we had a great evening, service and food was great! Admittedly, I only had this place for delivery. However, the food speaks volumes about them. I don't discount places based on decor anyway. Delivery was fast, driver was courteous. Food was excellent. I found the sugar in the corner of the pad thai strange but really good. Spring rolls were awesome and so were their dipping sauce. Very good. read more

I ordered from here for no more reason than the menu sounded nice. The reviews seemed a bit mixed so didn't know what to expect. I ordered two Thai dishes, two from the Malay/Singapore menu and a couple of starters. The Thai dishes were really really good! The red curry was strong and silky and fragrant, the chicken with sweet Basil was just delicious! Unfortunately the nasi goreng and mee goreng were totally forgettable. The starters were a hit. This is a small Thai restaurant with a distinct lack of aesthetic taste or sense of interior design. It has old fashioned wallpaper (not the new trendy heavy patterned wallpaper either) and plastic tablecloths. Not the best impression to make on your customers. The food and service more than make up for the shortfall in ambience however. The menu is large with choices from Thai, Malaysian and Singaporean, with so many choices it's hard to believe that everything is freshly made, but putting that to one side, it tastes pretty good. I went for the mixed starter for two, which was a delicious collection of small thai bites including the obligatory satay chicken, spring rolls, pork patties and a mini basket of peanut, prawn and pork. The plate was decorated with a very 70's style tomato crown, but tasted pretty good. Having difficulty remembering what I had for main, but think it was pretty good. All in all, a half decent restaurant that would probably get an extra star if they had a makeover. read more

I came here expecting big things. I was let down. Walking in the restaurant it was empty. We sat down and ordered a few beers, a starter to share and some mains. The food was slow, and not particularly hot when it arrived. But the most disappointing thing was the portion sizes which were so small that we ended up ordering two more mains and sharing them. Now i am happy to admit that i have a larger appetite than most people however i rarely have to order another main. Make of it what you will. read more

Compared with the huge amounts of Indian & Chinese takeaways there are to choose from it makes a nice change to get a Thai curry from Thai Classic in place of the usual Indian curry. I usually stick with the basics (which they do very well), i.e. a red or green curry; packed with ginger and coconut and great for hangovers. The prices are great too, I always expect to pay less for a takeaway here than anywhere else. There's something really authentic about this restaurant, from the staff to the food to the interior. It's reassuring to know that this restaurant has been there for years and that each time you go you are giving your money to the same family who set up the business. They do provide a lovely, genuine atmosphere for couples and groups, but I can usually be found picking up my takeaway on the morning after a slightly larger night out. read more

Thai Classic was a great find - I love Thai food and this restaurant really exceeded my expectations. You go down some little steps to the entrance, and if you are lucky you will be able to get a seat there and then, but they often get booked up - especially on a Friday or Saturday night - so it would be worth booking ahead. The restaurant is fairly small, but has a cosy and authentic atmosphere, and when I last visited everyone seemed to be in good spirits enjoying there food. The service is excellent, and you are taken good care of by the staff throughout your meal, with regular checks that everything is okay for you. I had the classic Thai red curry - which wasn't too spicy as it sometimes can be - and the portion sizes are perfect, just the right amount to fill you up! I shared a bottle of their house rose wine with the meal too, which was delicious and made it all the more enjoyable! I would definitely recommend this restaurant to people who want to experience quality and authentic Thai cuisine - just remember to book! read more

When I was eating here, I swear the music replayed itself about 3 times round the CD. It didn't do anything but make me laugh and like the restaurant abit more. Anyway! About the restaurant itself - I loved the very thrown together Thai-centric decor, it feels like you're in someone's home in Thailand; very humble indeed. The staff here are so friendly, and happy to recommend the best dishes for your meal. The food itself was very authentic and tasty, cooked by a Thai chef. There's nothing particularly special about Thai Classic Restaurant, other than perhaps, on a personal note, it is the first restaurant I ever ate in, in Bristol. It was chosen because my friend and I were short on cash and hungry, rather than for any perceived culinary expertise that the establishment may promise. It is after all on Whiteladies Road in Clifton, a place where the price of things doesn't reflect the quality. We preferred to take a shot at something that didn't cost too much so we could lessen the odds of being disappointed! Besides, we couldn't afford anything else! These days Whiteladies has a number of good and affordable eateries, but during a recent trip to Bristol to catch a performance by Insomniac Jack, a band that I used to book on a regular basis when I hosted music nights in Stokes Croft, I was in a hurry and headed for I thought to be a known entity! Perhaps it's because my perceptions of the place are inaccurate, but I have to admit to being pretty disappointed with the food. Pad Thai is my favourite Thai dish, and it's what I ordered five years ago. With forty minutes to order and eat I opted to duplicate my previous experience. The food came quickly, which is clearly to their credit, but wass bviously to the detriment of the quality. My plate looked like it had been assembled from a number of precooked ingredients, rather than being cooked as a whole from scratch. It tasted okay, but the vegetables were more than a little stewed... so they managed to get the flavour right, but the texture was miles away from where it needed to be to get anywhere close to being authentic! Perhaps what was more disappointing than the quality, was the quantity that I was served. I had a hole to fill and needed something substantial, so when my soggy splodge arrived on an oval dish the size of a side plate, my spirits withered to the consistency of the bean sprouts! In its defence, there was plenty of chicken, which is probably the most expensive ingredient within the dish... but I'm pretty sure that they have adopted a policy of keeping the serving sizes of the mains to frugal proportions to ensure that they sell starters and desserts with every meal. I neither had time or the interest in having a starter, and so I left feeling pretty short changed! I bought sandwiches from the 24 hour garage on the way home! This restaurant was so busy on a Thursday night that they were practically turning people away. If you want to pay over the odds for pretty substandard food, then it's better that you make a reservation to avoid disappointment... A bit of a catch 22 if you ask me... I reckon I'd have been less disappointed by being turned away, than I was by the food! Please note that I am used to eating my Pad Thai from street stalls in Bangkok... perhaps I have been spoiled!? read more

I went to this place with a large party. The staff was helpful and friendly and tried to be as attentative as possible considering the large group. There was also a short show with women dancing. The food in general wasn't good. I wasn't enthused with my dishes. There was a set 2 course menu which was good value for money. At the bottom of Whiteladies Road, just along the road from the BBC, Thai Classic is nestled in among a spot of the road which has 4 restaurants side by side (they must get along as they've all survived many years in this position). Offering Thai, Malaysian and Singaporean cuisine, the lady who owns the restaurant is really friendly and is always extremely well dressed in a beautiful exotic dress. The staff are happy to explain anything on the menu, and if they don't know, which happened in our case, they won't hesitate to go and check with the chef. I went for the most traditional dish on the menu, which claimed to be Thailand's favourite dish - steamed salmon with curry, kaffir lime leaves and coconut milk, all wrapped in banana leaves. It was purely delicious - aside from the novelty of the dish itself, the salmon was cooked to perfection and the combined tastes of the mixture were divine. The prices are more than acceptable; for two people I paid a little over £30 including drinks, which is very reasonable for this part of town, this service, and the quality of food. Having spent many happy hours in Thailand - eating far too much lovely food in little family run restaurants, corner cafes and from street vendors - I love going to Thai Classic on Whiteladies Road. It instantly takes me back to Bangkok and beyondIt isn't about the fanciest decor or the trendiest tables and chairs. It is about the friendly staff, welcoming atmosphere and absolutely delicious food at really reasonable prices. Be warned that the menu is vast (including a few Malaysian and Singaporean dishes) and you could spend longer choosing than it takes your food to come! Everything I have had thus far as been pretty authentic in my humble gastro opinion and tasty. So give it a go, even if it is for the drunken noodlesan apparently v popular dish! read more

For anyone with experience of Thai food cooked in Asia (or Australia for that matter) I think you will be disappointed by this place. I have eaten here twice. The first time I had the lunch special Pad Thai. It was okay, the main problem was it was quite oily and quite a bit of oil remained on the plate. I can't help but feel the recipes are a bit cheap when it comes to choice of ingredients. Next visit I had chicken satay starter and green chicken curry for main. The chicken satay was fine. But the green curry was pretty bad. First it was very watery, like a soup. Also it was really salty (way too much soy or fish sauce). The chicken looked bleached and a bit nasty (precooked). The aubergine was horribly overcooked. It's not meant to be like this I assure you! The rice was also overcooked ...i'm pretty sure it was not advertised as sticky rice! Other details: Service was pleasant and meal was served quickly. Both wine glasses were dirty and menu was wet (!). I think two visits is enough to make up my mind not to go again. read more

This is my favourite place to eat in Bristol. Hands down. The lunch menu is fantastic value for money, and it's the best Thai food I have had outside of Thailand!! Everything about this place is heart warming, sweet, gentle and I think another reviewer hit is spot on the head when they said "endearing"! family run business, they are unfailingly attentive, funny, polite, and always great with a sincere smile on their face. The decor is dated, simple, homely and cliché - and yet I prefer the ambience of the Thai Classic to any other restaurant in Bristol. There is no pretence, no falseness, and this is reflected in the prices of the dishes and the charmingly funny soft Thai pop music! In the evening the atmosphere changes to a quiet, comfortable understated and intimate, but can get a little loud with big parties on the friday and saturday night! The food here is cheap, really cheap, particularly the excellent lunch menu which I have enjoyed in its various forms for years now - the choice is excellent, but I keep coming back to my old favourites... crispy spring rolls, and chicken with chili sauce, tender, aromatic and piquant. Though the "wet" green and yellow curries, along with the "dry" red beef curry are truly sensational as well. I have great affection for this little gem of a restaurant, it is modest, and sweet, but the food is authentic, un-westernised, and truly addictive. I urge you to pop in one lunch time and give it a try, you might end up becoming an addict like me :) read more

Thai classic is a little restaurant on whiteladies road that is a delight to eat in. There is a little area out the front with a few tables. It is nice to sit outside in nice weather but by being on whiteladies road it is actually really noisy with both lots of cars and lots of people (especially on friday and saturday nights) so I would recommend eating inside instead. Inside the decor is, well, different with yellowy patterned wallpaperr and basic table and chairs, but the atmosphere is fantastic. The staff are really friendly and smilyey and happy to recommend that suit your tastes if you ask, especially as the menu is huge. But the food is authentically thai and really really tasty. The vegetarian options are good and the menu leaves you struggling to choose just one thing, but whatever you have it will definately be good, and all at resonable prices. They also do a lunchtime special deal which is great value as well. It can get a little noisy inside when it is full - which is usually is when I have been on a weekend evening. read more

Travelling Salesman being all over the country and whenever I am back in Bristol Thai Classic would be the restaurant I would go to whenever I fancy Thai, Malaysian or Singaporean Food.
