I ordered takeout at Thai Kitchen and ordered the Market Pad Thai and Curry Puffs. The Pad Thai was good, but not amazing. It was a tad dry and bland, which is surprising because I find most Pad Thai too saucy. The peanut curry sauce on the side is what makes it very unique from other Pad Thai dishes in town. The Curry Puffs were very yummy! And quite large. Honestly a great deal for $6.95. They're a cross between an empanada and a samosa... but with a Thai curry twist. Give them a try! 2 of us arrived at 5pm and the restaurant was empty except for 4 people dining. There was several vacant booths and tables everywhere. The server ask us where we would like to sit and we said we would like a booth. Immediately a middle aged blonde woman, either an owner or manager butted in and said we couldn't sit there because there was going to be a supper rush and we had to sit at a table for 2. The table for 2 was small in the corner against a cold window. The manager was apathetic and couldn't have cared less so we left. Had a chance to try Thai Kitchen, when first arriving to Thunder Bay, and I am so glad we did! This place was on the radar when looking at popular places to eat here so it was a good spot, especially when craving some asian food. We ended up placing a pick up order which was ready once we got there in about 20 minutes. We ended up getting red curry with veggies and tofu. This was delicious. The curry was spicy (which we asked for) and was so delicious. Creamy and yummy! We also got the pad see ew with beef. I think this dish was okay, beef was plentiful but the noodles were a bit too sweet for my liking compared to what I have had before. Overall though good experience. read more

I haven't been here in 11 years but my curry entree was as delicious as I remembered. I ordered a dozen spring rolls for take out the day I arrived in Thunder Bay to take to a dinner and they were a hit. It was a cold and rainy day in Thunder Bay- never mind it was August- the most summer-like ke month of the year on Lake Superior's North Shore. We came looking for warmth and sustenance on a Fri afternoon- most places in the vicinity were closed. The coconut chicken soup was hot/ good, and possibly too sweet, but perfect on this leaden gray day. The pad Thai was a bit mushy missing bean sprouts, cilantro and was just kinda ok in a comfort food way. ambiance is A+, our server was new, kind and genuine- although knew very little. We were able to split the soup and an extra bowl and utensils was delivered in advance- overall the service was excellent once we were recognized as a new customers (it is a seat yourself place during lunch). Glad I found it and will probably return. Five stars at this point but will not order pad Thai again. read more

Come here for excellent Thai food near the waterfront and downtown Thunder Bay. I was pleasantly surprised with this unassuming little restaurant. The decor is generic, but the food was really great!! I recently traveled around Thailand and took a couple cooking classes there. I was happy to see lots of dishes that can be hard to find, like Massaman curry, khao soi, and larb (ground meat) salads. The medium is a true medium in terms of spice level. Also, they grow their own Thai basil. They also have a picture of Rama IX, the current King of Thailand, which is always a good sign of a legit Thai restaurant! I enjoyed the yellow curry which was sweet, creamy, and came with lots of vegetables. I also like that rice is included with curries or stir fry dishes. It's so annoying when places charge extra for rice. Who eats curry without rice? I also tried the market pad thai which had a nice tamarind flavour. Portions are generous. It seems like most people, myself included, needed to doggie bag leftovers. The menu clearly marks which dishes can be made gluten free or vegetarian, and which ones have adjustable spice levels. The place has a decent amount of seating and also offers take out. If you get takeout, don't forget to ask for some of the different sauces (e.g. siracha, peanut, fish sauce, sweet chili sauce) to add to your meal. Service was prompt and friendly. Decided to check out this particular restaurant because the yelp reviews were at a 4.5. That usually means it's pretty good. Unfortunately, the meals were just average. We had terrible service. Whenever we wanted anything we had to walk into the main service area and request it. And then we carried out whatever it is that we wanted back to our table. They were not busy while we were there so I don't know what's going on there. Maybe try another place in California. They are all very good in the southern area of California. . read more

I love this restaurant. 100% Thai Menu. No fusion, or Canadian items. I've love the menu. Small, and concise. The food is fresh. If you have to wait, trust me its worth it. If going with friends new to Thai food, I'd check out the satay, pad thai, ginger chicken, or thai basil fried rice. Great curry's, and authentic thai spiciness. They have pineapple curry, yellow, green, red, as well as a malay style served with potato's. There have been times when I have been at the restaurant even more than once a week. The food is that good. Don't forget to check out the mango salads, either with shredded pork or dried shrimp. Did I tell you the chef makes her own Curry bases from scratch? As far as Thai food goes, this place is only mediocre at best. Pair that with the prices? .. Yea I don't see myself coming back. I can understand that there may not be any other "good" Thai options in Thunder Bay, but when I compare the food here to what I'm used to in Toronto, I really just can't resist giving my critique. 1) The pork spring rolls were not good. The texture of the pork was too mushy and crumbly, and there was an overall lack of flavour. 2) The satay skewers were not good. The pork was too salty and the chicken wasn't tender enough. 3) The pad thai was a bit too wet. As a stir fry, the dish should've been drier and and less mushy. The flavour was alright but could've been less sweet. The lime wedge that they gave me on the side was rather dry and took a very forceful squeeze just to get 3 drops of juice. 4) The curry was alright but I just wasn't very happy with their chicken on an overall - it wasn't tender enough for my standards. The two good things I can say about this place is that the portion sizes for the main dishes are rather large and the curry came with a lot of fresh bell peppers. I don't think the food here is bad, per se - I just think it would be comparable to food court quality but at a much higher price point. read more

I'm not sure if I should call that a Thai food, or was I expecting too much from this restaurant? I heard some good reviews from the locals and friends, so I decided to visit the Thai Kitchen with expectations that I would enjoy its food and ambience. My response? Meh, I don't think I will be coming back. Let's get started with some minor details. Okay, the interior design was alright, nice and bright. A bit too many Buddha statues, and kinda felt like religious artifacts are being utilized as just mere props. (Should we see tons of crucifix when we go to Italian restaurants? I'm not sure) Please, respect other cultures. Waiting time was quite long (kudos to the restaurant for being busy and having many customers), we can wait 20 minutes, sure. But the wait staff wasn't attentive at all and very disorganized in arranging seats for the customers. We sat down and took about another 15 minutes for them to take our order. It took another 20-25 minutes for us get the food. No water refill during meals, not a single checkup on food quality, and why does tipping option on card machine start at 15%, (I think 5% tip was enough for the waitress' work). Okay, let's get down to the important part, food. We ordered Padthais and Spring rolls. First, Spring rolls were alright, warm, nice and crunchy. The temperature and the look of it intrigued me and got me excited until I cracked it open just to find oil and grease to overflow the bottom of my dish. The pork inside, however, the texture resembled that of wurst sausages. It was overflowing with grease and was difficult to eat without sauce. I hoped if they could put some more effort into food preparation so that I don't have to submerge my food in sauces. As for the main dish, I wasn't sure if I should call that a Pad Thai. Thai-stir fry should not be a lukewarm semi-dead noodle drenched with grease. Yes, I understand stir-frying needs oil, but it was too much, and yes, it came out quite cold. Tofu in the dish retained texture like rubber. I understand that it was fried, and fried tofu can get hard. But I hoped if they diced them properly to keep the moist inside. I usually finish my food, but despite its small portion, I couldn't eat half of it. Oh yeah, and it was too expensive for its quality. Overall, I didn't have a good experience. So please, Thai Kitchen, listen to this advice. read more

Many people will say that Thunder Bay lacks the culinary diversity of larger cities, which to some extent is true, but Thai Kitchen is helping Spice things in this town up! This is one of my absolutely favorite places to eat in Thunder Bay! The springrolls never dissapoint, and neither do the entrees! I almost always order #26 Khao Pad Krapow. Fried rice with thai basil, your choice of meat, cilantro, lime, cucumber and your choice of heat! You absolutely must try it! We just moved to a town a couple hours from Thunder Bay and that town has virtually nothing good to eat. We decided to order take out from here since Thai is my favourite food to eat. I went to Thailand on my honeymoon so I know what authentic thai is. Anyways, we ordered the green thai curry with chicken and the stirfry with basil. It came with lots of rice, which i liked. Usually you only get a small bowl. The food was awesome and spicy!! We got it in medium spicy but it seemed hotter than that. So, order mild if you are worried. If I was to have any criticism, it would be to add more chicken to the dishes and more sugar to the Thai Iced tea. I will definitely be coming back here :) read more

Came here a couple days ago, it was okay. Not very many seafood /shrimp options...and we even asked if can get the pad se ew noodles with shrimp instead of the meat options as we can't eat meat... And we were willing to pay the difference etc. However, they were very strict and said no changes. Fine. We ordered the green curry with shrimp, it was really okay... It wasnt green at all. It should have been called white curry because it tasted like a coconut milk with a couple of spices thrown in and the shrimp was very bland in it. We also ordered the mango bubble tea which wasn't so good and they didn't have bubbles either. I don't think I will return, if I am in the mood for Thai I would rather get it from Thai express in the mall because it wasnt worth the $20. read more

Pleasant enough atmosphere & staff... However the Malay Curry was the worst I've ever had. There was a long hair on my rice (which the waitress graciously replaced). The "curry" was light pink and tasted like plain coconut milk with minimal spices thrown in at the last minute. It was clear that the greyish potatoes had been boiled separately and added at the last minute as well. Just finished lunch. 3 of us shared an order of 6 small burrito sized Spring Rolls, Sen Pad Pet with Pork and Pad Krapow with chicken. The two dishes were medium spiced. All the food was spiced as described. Nothing watered down for non-Thai taste. The flavours were authentic and true. Everything was so good. This wasn't "surprisingly good for TBay", but instead one of the best Thai meals I've had in all of Ontario. The food was so, so good. Really recommended! read more

Went in as a group of 4. Only 3 other tables occupied. Our waiter barely greeted us, we waited for water, then he brought our menus. After 15 minutes I managed to catch the eye of the manager and shrugged at her. Is there a problem? she asked from behind the bar. Yes could someone take our order? (Our waiter was conversing & laughing with his co-workers in sight of us..oh he CAN smile!) He came & took our order, o you want that dish with tofu? No shrimp. Well he got tofu cuz you're not listening. Each time he put something on the table we thanked him with no response. No apologies,nothing. A business across the street just went out of business.
