Have you ever lost your soul? Not in an emo vampire sort of lame way. But in a deep longing and aching in your bones sort of way? That is what it feels like to be an Chinese person in (North-East) England and NOT HAVE ANY RICE. For nearly 3 weeks. I felt like I lost a special part of me. We came here with Papa, Sarah and the BF. It's located upstairs with a darling view of the street. In the early evenings, it's the thing to do to ride your little motorcycle around the town square, over and over and over again. Maybe there will be some leisurely girls hanging out in the square. Maybe they'll think your bike is cool. Sarah picked out the chicken yellow curry immediately because "it had potatoes" and a meal must have potatoes the way white must be on rice. I picked the basil beef. And Papa picked the pork something or other. We got 2 orders of coconut rice and 1 order of regular rice between the 4 of us. And we started off with a double order of the veg sampler platter. Veg sampler platter: Fried stuff platter. Everything was fried. Seriously. And nothing was green. Sarah was shocked and appalled when I told her that potato does not count as a veg in the 5-a-day fruit and veg guidelines. Free Shrimp Chips: Papa and Sarah claimed that it was imitation. Of course it is. Of course. I opened my eyes very wide and had no reply. The food was all very very tasty. I would have preferred a green curry because I think the flavors are brighter and slightly spicier. But the basil beef was well seasoned and the veg accompanying it was perfectly cooked. Viewing the food with American eyes, the servings of protein were about or less than 3 oz per dish. There was a lot of veg filler. And the servings of rice were typical sizes. Not having had rice in about 3 weeks, I rolled around the grains of rice in my mouth like honeyed wine. Rice. It's part of my soul. read more

When you can find this restaurant open (it seems to have very variable opening hours), the food is second to none. For some reason it's never very busy, which I can't understand, because I've always eaten delicious Thai food when I've visited - freshly prepared and well presented. The prices are reasonable too. It's a funny little restaurant, perched as it is in one upstairs room, but it's clean and neat and the staff are very friendly. The decor is a bit dated, though, and it's not very private - the tables are quite close together. The food is traditional Thai, and absolutely gorgeous. Any of the restaurant's faults are outweighed by the quality of its food. read more

I have heard many people rave about this place, but I have only ever had bad food there. Granted I've only eaten there twice, but the food was either dry and minimal, or far too runny and like dish water. During the week its usually so quiet that its lacking in atmosphere and at the weekend its busier and therefore the service isn't as good. I would suggest everyone gives it a try for themselves though, as like I said, everyone I've spoken to says its nice. read more
