We arrived on time for our 6 pm reservation and asked if we could taste a couple of wines before ordering a glass. This is common practice in most restaurants, but our server told us we had to go to the tasting bar and pay for a tasting at a separate cost. We reluctantly went along and each chose a wine. I asked if we could buy a bottle to be consumed at the table, but was told that, although they could sell me a bottle, we could not open it or drink it in the restaurant, so we just ordered a glass of wine. We were quickly served our salads and bread board and placed our entree orders. From here on in it was totally downhill, It took over an hour to receive our food, while tables all around us with people who had arrived after we did were served, ate, and left. Our server didn't even come over to see if we were OK, wanted anything, etc. It's like we weren't there. When the food finally arrived my pork loin was dry and overcooked. My wife's pasta was fine, but nothing special; the dessert, a blueberry crumble, was excellent, but it was nearly 9 pm by the time we reached dessert. This was supposed to be a special birthday dinner, and we chose this place because of our past experience here, but it was a real let down this time. Considering how much better other winery restaurants in the area are, particularly Grand Pré, we'll avoid Luckett in the future.

At that time, they had only one red and one white wine, and I don't think those wines even had names. I don't recall there being any food service. What a joy to return and find that it has expanded to include a fantastic restaurant offering gourmet meals. The food and wine, Tidal Bay in this case, were superb. We shared an outstanding salad and bread service; my wife had the duck confit, and I enjoyed the best salmon I've had in ages (and I eat a lot of salmon). My wife loved her dish, and we enjoyed the dessert plate of Italian pastry, ice cream, and berries, topped off with a great cup of coffee. Service was first rate, and our server could not have been more attentive. I wish we had eaten here more than once, but we'll be back on our next visit to Wolfville.

Tastefully set among grape vines, this winery is both modern and high end while very pleasantly unassuming and not pompous. The tasting is offered as self guided or with a presenter. Since we had our dog with us we were seated outside on a beautiful deck, with a breeze, shade and amongst luscious greenery. The self presentation and tasting is done in a very stylish way and we only wish other wineries followed suit: We received flights of reds and whites in a beautifully designed wine glass holder (see pics) along with a tasting notes for each wine, and the recommended order to be tasted. We were able to go through them leisurely with no pressure and ended up buying three bottles that we liked the most! Following the tasting we continued with a self guided walk through their vineyards which ended in a spectacular overlook of the Grand Pre area, The whole experience was perfect, from the setting, the service, and the walk. Absolutely a must if you visit the area even for a brief time.

This past weekend I went to Ironwood Farm's Pig In A Day event with Chris Velden and Rupert…read moreJannasch that was promoted on the Slow Food Nova Scotia site. The price was $25 for Slow Food members and $30 for guests. I didn't know what to expect as I'd never been to anything like this, but it was a seriously awesome time. There was a small group of us (~8 people) in an outbuilding on the farm, and Chris walked us through basic butchering of the pig, where different cuts come from, different uses for different parts, and of course talking quite a bit about the value of knowing where your food come from. Chris also showed us how to make cured meats like bacon and prosciutto, and of course sausages. The whole session took about 3-4 hours and was a really great opportunity to connect with a chef of his experience in such an intimate environment - not to mention the farmer who raised the pigs, Rupert! Rupert, was there throughout as well to talk about the challenges of farming today, and also the fun and satisfaction that can come from making good quality food locally. At one point Rupert talked about how the pigs he raised would play together in the field and run around and race him when he rode by on his four wheeler - you could tell that Rupert cares a lot about his livestock and their well-being, and you knew those pigs grew up happy. Snacks, cider and coffee were served throughout, and lunch was provided as well (Pork loin, roasted potatoes, roasted beets, sweet potato and carrot and some seriously amazing blueberry almond bars for dessert) everything (well maybe not the almonds) in the meal came from the farm, and was prepared by Chris and his wife.. and it was phenomenally good. Honestly the food was so good that I would have paid $30 just to eat there! I have to admit that for a long time I wasn't a pork fan - I always found it dry and flavourless - but that has everything to do with how the pigs are raised; you just aren't going to get excellent pork from the supermarket because in the world of mass meat production, the pigs are raised for quantity not quality. Rupert's pork is rich, flavourful, and worth every penny; the meat is so different that I can honestly say I never tasted pork until I had free range. I'm going to go next year and bring my daughter (who will be 3 next year), so she can "meet her meat" and understand where her food comes from. Parents need not worry, as unless your child is particularly sensitive, Pig In A Day isn't gruesome or scary in any way. Just a tip: Wear warm clothing and long underwear - it's chilly!
