History
Established in 1971.
As the Sixties rushed to a psychedelic close with a blaze of love and chemicals heralding the dawn of a New Age, a right-on group of friends had their stab at creating a new order. They wanted to establish a way of trading goods that broke away from the ideas of money commerce and to that end founded On The Eighth Day.
Located above a boutique on the now demolished New Brown Street in Manchester City Centre, it opened as a craft exchange and alternative centre. "On the seventh day God rested, on the eighth day He (She or It) created something better" was the idea of the moment at 11pm, September 11th 1970.
The shop has now developed into an ethical, vegetarian grocery & health store with nutritionists, natural beauty experts, foodies and wine buffs on hand to share their knowledge with a widening customer base.
The Cafe has developed into a 60-70 seater eaterie with a daily changing menu which serves slow cooked, healthy, hot food as well as cold sandwiches, quiches and drinks.
Meet the Business Owner: Co-op Member A.
We are a Workers Co-operative and so the business is co-operatively owned and democratically managed by the Eighth Day workers. Most of the full time workers at 8th Day are members of the co-operative who work in either the shop or café AND manage the business. There is no top-down management system and we all earn the same; all members are expected to self-manage, and manage each other - often difficult, but worth it! The trade off: a sense of ownership of the business; playing a part in making decisions that affect you (the worker); empowering members to drive the business forward.
