I have always loved this course but today my mind has been changed. Picked up a tee time with a friend and just wanted to have a relaxing round of golf with our significant others. We showed up 15 minutes early to find out that even though we were paying for everyone to play, the fact that my girlfriend doesn't have a set of clubs disqualifies us from playing. I understand there are rules but the fact she probably wouldn't have hit 7 balls during the 18 holes and was only there to enjoy the weather and watch me play really rubbed me the wrong way. I have talked this course up so much for the 3 years I have lived in Aiken but my opinion on this place has absolutely changed. I understand if this was a tournament or there were people backed up to tee off then this could be a problem. That was not the case today. I think I will play Midland Valley from here on out. read more

Aiken Golf club is a leftover from the gilded age. This 18 hole, par 70 walk and cart club was built in 1912 in downtown Aiken. The semi-private course was designed by Donald Ross and remodeled by Jim McNair. The narrow course, with deep roughs, trees and undulated greens, is a true-shot-maker's dream. It ws the first club to offer a forward tee for women. Call for reservations and fees. Golf Digest awarded this club 3 1/2 Stars in 2008 and listed it on their Best Places to Play in America. While it doesn't get quite the next door Palmetto Golf Club does(built in 1892), it is a great old school course that is a joy to play at a reasonable rate. It has the feel of an old Irish course. Very walkable, nicely bunkered, narrow to make up for its short length. Just fun and a very welcoming test of golf. read more

I rate golf courses on 3 items, course condition, pace of play, and value. Overall Aiken GC is an average course. It's ridiculously easy and very short. Management keeps it in good shape, and is recommend it as a "change of pace" course in the Aiken/Augusta area. 1- I played the day after Thanksgiving and being it was winter the course was in surprisingly good shape. The greens were smooth and fair. The fairways and tee boxes were ok, not country club conditions, but perfectly suitable for a public course. 2- Took just about 5 hours to play, which is far too long for a course that's only 5800 from the tips. We never saw a Marshall and there was a 25 min wait on the first tee. 3- I paid $38 in a holiday and that's not a terrible deal, however, I'm not sure what Aiken rates typically go for. This course is not a "championship" course, it's more of an executive level course and I wouldn't pay much more than $40. read more

I like this course. I'm 70, and the length is a good challenge for me. The staff is pleasant and helpful and the course is in good condition all but the driest days. It is storybook pretty and an heirloom from a nicer age. read more

Hidden gem. Old school. Golf as it was played 50 years ago. Short, fun, but not easy. Greens are undulating and interesting. Elevation changes, large strategic trees add to the challenge. No bad holes. Staff is welcoming, friendly and cares about the golf course and guests. Prices are reasonable. Usually in excellent condition. read more

I play this course frequently. I am 68, have a 7.6 index, and play a LOT of golf courses. I LOVE this golf course. It is NOT a high end private course, but you knew this. Maintenance is 95th percentile for a public course. If you read the card, you would think it was a pushover at 5800 yards. It is NOT. It has the feel of Augusta national - Gorgeous high pines framing the holes and elevation changes that give the holes heroic looks. Here are three typical holes - # 2 shortish par five, hard dogleg right in the last 100 years. WIDE fairway, but if you are on the right the 80 ft high pines block you. Occasionally, I can make a run at the green, but most often, I am laying up to 80 yards or so. Then, I have a wedge to a small green with a LARGE false front.Miss this, and I am done. Go long and I have a downhill putt that can easily catch the false front and wind up off the green with a hard chip. #3 is a long par four. The fairway is narrow, with woods right, and creek left. The small green has a pond right, and I am normally, from the whites, hitting a 4 iron, 5W or 3W to the green. Green is tiny in the front, and heavily sloped. You do not want to be putting from above. #4 short par 3, about 130-150 yds, but uphill about 30-40 feet. Tough club selection. Two tiered green with small forward portion and big hill in the middle of the green. If you go safe and play long, you will be doing well to keep your first putt on the green. The course is steeped in history, and many historical photos are present in the clubhouse. Fred Astaire' greens fee chit, for one. In the historical society, there is a photo of the first 4 masters winners on the steps outside the clubhouse. AND - it is cheap. Don't miss this one. read more
