This is my first time doing any kind of self defense or martial arts, but Mrs. Sensei makes all the women in the class feel very comfortable no matter their experience level. She is so patient and kind and such a mom figure to all the ladies in the class! Mrs. Sensei says she likes to keep things "old school" and doesn't pump up the place with music as we practice, giving us the ability to focus, pace ourselves, and ask questions along the way. She clearly explains the concepts of our drills so we know why we're doing what we're doing. She is always open to answer any questions about the exercises and meets each woman where they are in their fitness journey. Kempo also gives back to the community twice a year around Valentine's Day and Halloween, offering free classes to kids who may not otherwise have tried or been able to afford a martial arts class. It's great to see that it really is "family fitness" there! Many of the women in my class have children in Kempo's kids' classes and bring their kids out to their different events they host (like movie nights!). The location is easy to find in the Hung Vuong Shopping Center next to the Tutti Toscani's restaurant and Soccer Post store. I even took a buddy of mine to a class, who attends a different gym, to check out how amazing the environment and instruction is with this location. He couldn't stop talking about how technical the instruction was and how great the team members were. This school is part of a network with some of the best gyms in the State of New Jersey. Professor McHugh, Coach Tony, Coach Pete, and Coach John are all extremely well versed in BJJ and have a true gift for teaching the technical side of BJJ. Positions and submissions are broken down to the basic elements with steps to ensure understanding prior to moving on to more complex technique. The instruction is absolutely top notch and they accommodate all ages and fitness levels. I was never an athletic person growing up, but I never felt overwhelmed or left behind. But the teachings itself was great. The kickboxing class and jiu jitsu class only had a handful of students on your average weekday. I learned a lot in those two hours and have a whole new appreciation for those who practice this sport. My neck was so sore the next day. Special thanks to the guy that was my kick boxing partner and the guy that slammed me to the floor and put me in that neck submission for bjj.... all really eye opening. Everyone was nice and welcoming. If you do decide to join, they have the 3, 6, 12 month options. You'll be paying the most if you go with three months, about $180 per month. Plus the initiation fee which is pricey. This is also Not factoring additional equipments you may need. If you're financially able to, I think it's worth the investment if you're looking for a new hobby or looking to try something new.
