The chicken and leek pie was 10/10, best I've ever had. The fish and chips however we more like 4/10. Over battered and left the fish in more of a mush, do not recommend. If you're looking for a good pub experience. The Duke has it!

The bartender was incredibly friendly and helpful! When I ordered one of their cask ales, she let me know it might taste warmer and flatter than I'm used to as an American (I'm a beer enthusiast who has been to England before so I knew this, but could definitely be helpful information to other Americans). My son was psyched to see they had J2O, his new favorite British drink. We ordered lunch from the Thai restaurant next door (the two businesses are connected) and sat at the corner table by the fireplace. The food was excellent, the beer superb, the atmosphere cozy and quaint. Everything I could hope for as an American looking for a traditional English pub. Of the many pubs we went to during our trip around England, this was one of my favorites.

It…read morehas a traditional, local charm and when we visited on a Sunday night was packed by locals and visitors. Luckily we found some stool seating by the front and were able to enjoy some beers and take in the ambiance. There's an upstairs that is accessible by a very very narrow staircase which even has handles for support, all part of the fun lol!! Beer: We tried out the Guinness (great pouring process!), peroni, and a local ale which the bartender allowed me to sample. He was very helpful and walked me through the different ciders they had in stock and even how you could add fruit syrups to sweeten the flavor. What makes this place even more memorable was the helpfulness of the young guy bartending. He helped us plan how to get to Gatwick airport extremely early the next morning and we owe him a big one!

Despite having to sit near a guy who had to make sure all of London could hear him, it was great. We both got a couple of beers and I got the Lord Nelson, a burger with with bacon and egg. It was really good, but impossible to eat like a hamburger. Service was great!

I take a seat and wait for server to come by and take my order. Fifteen minutes or so pass, and several servers walk past me. No one stopped to bring me a menu, or even acknowledge that I was waiting. Finally, I saw the same server and asked her was anybody going to come by to take my order. She told me that orders are to be placed at the bar. I asked her if the kitchen was still open, and she said that they also don't serve food. Jesus.... If patrons have to order their own cocktails, why are their servers present at all? Moreover, why isn't there any signage indicating to patrons that this establishment is both self-seating as well as self-service (well, placing your own order at the bar)?

There are lots of pubs to choose from, but The Red Lion has political history and even surprise visitors that come by.
