This was a decent pub we all had dinner at in London on a Monday. Service is a little different in London. You typically order at the bar instead of a waitress coming to the table. One eventually came to our table after sitting awhile. I of course had to try the fish n chips. A couple of veggie burgers were ordered and a regular burger. Surprisingly happy hour was still on at 8 o'clock so drinks were ordered. The food all came at the same time and everything was cool. The fish had a nice flavor from the fried batter. To me it was similar to Long John Silvers as far as the batter is concerned, but slightly better quality overall. The fries were standard. The only thing horrible was the very bland mashed green peas. They should be omitted from every pub across the country, but I think it is a traditional item included with the fish. The cocktails were good as well as the price. The sticky toffee pudding was something else I was advised to try while in London. I must admit it was really delicious. It came with a scoop of ginger ice cream and a warm buttery toffee sauce to pour over. It was delightfully warm and sweet and paired well with the ice cream. The cake itself was moist enough on its own with notes of brown sugar and molasses. I could have had seconds and thirds of this desert. Yum! The majority of my party didn't think the food was fantastic. The burgers happened to be somewhat alright. This was a first for me having pub food and I would have more again as long as I stick to the basics. read more

I only came here because it was a convenient meeting place for several friends, and one of my friends is a regular here, so we all decided to meet one evening, and I am glad we did! Yes, there are many pubs in London, everyone has their favorite, everyone has their local, and my "local" depends on where I am staying. In any case, several of us met here. The place was definitely hopping but one of our group arrived early and grabbed a table. We all ordered drinks, I had beer which was delicious. After perusing the menu, I ordered the standard- Fish & Chips, with Mushy Peas. It came out quickly and was fried to perfection. Everybody else who ordered food seemed happy with their choices. They do not honor the Yelp check in offer but the fish 'n chips were better than the one we had on our food tour in Boroughs market! The lightly battered haddock was delightful with chips and mushed peas. Their Belgium chocolate brownie was surprisingly the best one I've had in a long time! Service was friendly, the place had a nice consistent flow of newcomers even at 21:20 on a Thursday night. Great spot for a great roast but make sure you come with an empty stomach! We came around 3pm and the pub was quite quiet. It gets busier as the day goes tho. We went on the first day of the year and the service is just as good as how you'd get from a pub if not better. There's 5 options for roast - roast beef/sirloin, roast chicken, pork belly, veggie roast, and a sharing one which include the beef, chicken and the pork belly. We are a party of two so the sharing one is perfect because we were already ready to order two roasts. Oh my god. There is so much food but we were so ready to eat. Not only do they give you two Yorkshire puddings, beef, half chicken, pork belly like they promised, they tuck in a few sausages and pigs in the blankets in the mix which is such a pleasant surprise. Everything is cooked very well - I found the beef usually tend to be pretty dry but their beef was done very nicely. We came here for a weekend lunch after hanging out in Hyde Park hoping for a great pub experience and got some of that. We were really looking for garden seating since it's nice to be outside with our kids and the fact that they had a garden was a big part of why we came. The actual garden was more of an alley in feel than a garden, which was disappointing. We got a burger, fish and chips, bangers and mash and a few pints. The bangers and mash were fantastic and the highlight of the visit. The burger was so-so at best and the fish and chips were somewhere in the middle. The beer list was decent for a London pub in that they had Guinness, a hazy IPA and a few local craft beers on tap. All in all, this sis probably a 3 star pub except for the bangers and mash, which push it up to a four for me. read more

Very nice corner pub with very good service. There were not many people in there for lunch. The haddock was cooked perfectly, except it had much more batter than other pubs I've tried in London. I was most impressed with their mushy peas. As you can tell from the close up picture, the peas were not whipped into a paste, but lightly mushed preserving the flavor of the peas. read more

TLDR: historic Freddie Mercury Vibes in the basement in a classic English pub. Cheers from a tourist. Came for a late lunch and was pleasantly surprised by the service with the QR codes given how many people complained about them. But the restaurant wasn't at peak so we might've gotten lucky. Food was solid, has a decent drink menu. Downstairs apparently Freddie Mercury penned his famous "We Are the Champions" song. Who knows if it's true but it makes for a great picture. read more

We were looking for a Sunday Roast and The Champion delivered. We made reservations but showed up earlier and were able to be seated which was awesome since the place was packed. We ordered a hibiscus spritz, pardon peppers, crispy cauliflower, scotch egg, side salad, and roast dinner to share. Unfortunately they didn't have the original yuzu spritz that I wanted but the hibiscus was tasty and refreshing. Also unfortunately they ran out of scotch eggs so we didn't get to try those. The Parton peppers were okay. They were large and seedy. Flavor was good though. The cauliflower was delicious and came with a yummy aioli but the portion was tiny. Side salad didn't taste dressed. The roast dinner however was fantastic. Now this is our first one but I was surprised at how much I liked it. I love the variety you get and it's a good portion for 2-3 people. The best part was the au jus because you get a whole jug. Seasoning wise, everything could have been more flavorful but nothing a little salt and pepper can't help! Being from California, I don't have a whole lot of experience with pubs. But if I were to imagine what a true pub would look, feel, and sound like by virtue of storybooks and movies, this would be it. The interior is cozy and dimly lit with a rather old-fashioned feel. The menu is impressive with a full gamut of stick-to-your-ribs food and some seriously amazing beers and ciders. My newest jam is Sunday Roast, which I've only had a few times in my life, and the kinds they're making here are superbly unforgettable. I got the Chicken Roast with a medley of fresh seasonal veggies and a few meaty add-ons for good measure. And let's not forget that serving of Yorkshire Pudding and wine jus reduction. I washed the enormous portion down with what must be the crispiest, most perfectly-balanced cider I've ever tasted, served in a huge glass. Add to all this impeccable service and attention to detail, and there was nothing about my experience that I didn't like. This is a must stop for me when in London, great beer and good food BUT the last time I was in, Saturday at 5pm (1700), the kitchen was "on hold" for over an hour and I was not allowed to order dinner. So love this place but this is unacceptable for a Saturday evening. I was told down stairs was full but isn't that the objective. "Colin and the team" should be able to do better than this. They did honor one free pint of beer from Yelp and that was very nice. The calamari had a very light batter and they were fresh and tasty. After too many pints, I'm guessing it is a multiple times a day tradition for patrons to sing Queen's We Are the Champions in the small garden, the basement lounge, or the large pub/dining space upstairs. They serve up traditional British fare near Hyde Park and Kenington Palace. Despite their proximity to these touristy spots, they offer solid food and drink options. They had a large beer list, and more importantly, the fish and chips with a side a mushy peas was tasty and satisfying. Bonus points for free water on the bar. The Champion is one of the many English pubs that dot the London scene. We were a group of six (two of which were children under the age of 12) but lucky for us, the Mercury Lounge downstairs was open and had seating (the main dining room upstairs was jam packed). We had the downstairs lounge for most of our visit (occasional smokers would come down to smoke in the outdoor patio off of the lounge). While we sat downstairs, one had to order at the bar upstairs. They bring down the food when it is ready. The menu was typical English pub grub. I again opted for the fish and chips... I have not quite yet found the best one yet, but thought I'd try at a place called "the Champion". It was definitely good! I upsized my order, and probably should have had the regular size. Service here was decent. The staff seemed a bit disorganized when it came time to check out. We settled the bill upstairs (I guess everything is done at the bar). No one seemed to know which table we were. After about what seemed like an eternity, the person who took our order showed up and "remembered" our table and printed out our check. We did not realize until we got back to our hotel and checking our credit card receipt that we actually paid for the table who later came downstairs after us! read more

We were last here in 2019, pre-COVID, and I left a 5-star review. Nothing has changed. The food is still wonderful and the staff still outstanding. I had to order the prawn starter like before, and it was soooo good! Note: I saw on the menu they had added chorizo to it, but I wanted it just the way I remembered it. That was no problem for Lucas, our super server. Everything else we ordered was lovely as well. One comment: Some reviewers mentioned long wait times for food and service. I have never seen a more hard-working group of servers. Up and down stairs, covering the front, the back, the garden area, they still managed to be welcoming and friendly to all (Thanks again, Lucas!). This spot is located close to the Doubletree in Notting Hill, we were anxious to get a glass of wine and sit at a local British pub. Very relaxed atmosphere, not too loud. We just had a load of bread and some shrimp to munch on as our purpose was just to have some wine and good company. My wife and I were in London for one week and came here 3 times. It was the very first place we ate, and after the initial experience we were haunted by the food and had to go back. In case you are already sold after my first two sentences and are looking at the rest of this review like lol tl;dr, I want to quickly leave you with this pro tip: make a reservation online if you want to eat dinner / want a table in the evening. One of the dishes that made us pine for the Champion after the first visit was the slow-cooked ox cheek and mashed potatoes. The meat was melt in your mouth. We're not sure what they put in their mash, but it's magical... probably some of the best mash ever. Across our visits we had the bangers and mash, mac & cheese, beef pie, ox cheek, and sticky toffee pudding, and all of them were outstanding. The atmosphere is quite nice, the bartenders are friendly, and the beer selection is better than most pubs if you are a craft beer fan... they don't just have 6 different lagers on tap like a lot of pubs. They had the Meantime (Greenwich based) Hop Kick Pils on tap, which was likely the best pint we tasted in London. read more

Lovely place to stop for lunch, dinner, or just a good beer. Randomly stopped in while strolling through the neighborhood and was pleasantly surprised. I ordered a bacon chicken burger with mac n cheese. The chicken in the burger was so moist and delicious and grilled just right I swear it got better with every bite.
