I used to visit this bar all of the time in college. I've been out if Montgomery for three years now and decided to take a walk down memory lane while here for a retreat. The cover was 5 bucks which I paid via the bar since I didn't have cash. I initally ordered a Sidecar and the bartender didn't know how to make it so, I switched to a simple Mardas cocktail ( vodka, cranberry and orange) That ran me $17! Let's face it - Montgomery isn't exactly the first place that comes to mind when thinking about cities with a rockin' nightlife. That being said, The Alley Bar represents just about the most you could expect out of Montgomery's meager offerings, so putting it on the scale with bars from other cities is a bit unfair. In terms of Montgomery however, this is clearly THE place to be on a Friday/Saturday night. This place is generally pretty crowded with a wide array of people. Because of it's popularity, expect a $5 cover charge at the door. Kind of annoying, but hey, there's nowhere else to go, so take it or leave it. Knowing that they're the hip bar to go to, The Alley Bar clearly recognizes it's need to cater to a variety of customers. It features a rather typical bar with bar stools and high tables, but is flanked by several swanky lounge couch areas. In a large adjacent room is a stage for live music with cheap plastic tables and chairs for the audience. Oh, and can't forget the (totally random) "ice bar" in a small room where they serve liquor in ice shot glasses and provide fur coats to combat the constant 40 deg temperature. Basically The Alley Bar has something for everyone it seems Because they cater to everyone though, you'll see just that - everyone. Twenty-one year olds, colleges kids, recent college grads, 30-, 40-, and 50-year olds. You'll see them all. So don't expect to go here to check out your own demographic, because they'll only make up a small slice. Prices are average, although they do have a decent selection of beer (draft and bottled). I didn't have any mixed drinks, so unfortunately their mixology skills will have to be reviewed by someone else. In short though - a fun place to go to with friends, to people watch, and to maybe catch a decent live band. If you're looking to go out in Montgomery, this is your best bet. EDIT: WOW, I almost forgot to mention that the cops watch this place like hawks. MEAN hawks. I made the mistake of channeling my inner schoolkid and climbed a bit on the tall watertower that's right outside the bar. Apparently this is a source of great irritation to the Montgomery cops who decided to berate me for climbing on "their" watertower. Not that big of a deal, except they approached me with their tasers drawn. Pretty much a HUGE wtf there. I could have been the next taser-victim sensation on youtube. Damn, so close! But really, make sure you have a ride home and don't do anything stupid outside the bar, or you may get tased! read more

Had a great time at this bar on a visit to Montgomery last month. It's located on Commerce St. in Montgomery, which is the main drag downtown. While visiting another venue, I was informed that the monthly jazz set was happening at the Alley Bar that evening. Happy to have walked up that evening. The venue is large, with a stage a 2 large bars. Love that they have tables, high tops, and sofas for lounging with your friends. Beer selection is good, there is also a large full bar in an adjacent room, and an ice bar. The ice bar is like a freezer with a full bar set up. You can purchase shots that are poured in an ice shot glass. It's customary to slam your ice shot glass onto the concrete floor when you finish. I found the bartenders to be cool, and I met a few cool folks in the audience that evening. There is another venue/bar that is affiliated called Aviator. Can't comment as I didn't venture over. I will definitely go back when I'm in Montgomery. read more

Good bar. Decent crowd. Some days it can be really packed and it may take a min to get your drink. The bands and DJ's are cool but I wish they would mix up the music more because it's a very diverse crowd people when you go there. It's usually country bands but the bands that they booked are really good. The drinks are slightly overpriced at times but the bartenders are very friendly. I once got a free drink because me and one of the bartenders were auburn fans. But that's how they are. If you're lucky sometimes they will give you a drink free of charge if their in a great mood. Great atmosphere too. I made a lot of friends here in the past couple of years. Everybody is cool. You have your drunks and sometimes the bathrooms can be pretty nasty. But this is the best bar in town. I come here a lot on weekends. If you want to just chill, drink, and listen to live music, this is the place to be. Alley bar feels like it should be somewhere that is not Montgomery, AL. There I said it. Everyone was thinking it. Even the people who are there all the time. It's the reason they're there. That point aside, I enjoyed myself every time I visited this esteblishment. I would recommend not being there on nights they charge a cover, but then I'd be recommending that you miss out on some pretty cool local music and at least one opportunity to have a good time. Decent bar. As other reports say, this is as good as it gets around here. The atmosphere was pretty nice with plenty of tables and seats. The music wasn't extremely loud and there were tons of LCD monitors to give a good sports bar feel. Alcohol prices were decent. Not good at all. Half of the taps were down due to a cooling problem. Not a big deal. Half of the remaining taps were not stocked. 60 handles and only 7 beers available. And you can't order canned or bottled here, you have to go next door. Finally just ordered a Johnny Walker red on rocks. $12 for 1.5oz. I asked the bartender if that was for real, she apologized and said yes and that it was her last night. She was the loan bright spot. Abysmal. TERRIBLE SERVICE. Traveling on business and visited this location with colleagues before heading to dinner on 11/6/19. The bartender was buried in her phone and sitting on top of the back bar the ENTIRE time we were there. No engagement or opportunity to buy additional drinks. I ended up paying the bill and really struggled with the tip portion of it...I am a really good tipper and will tip well if appropriate. I wanted to leave a note on the receipt and let the bartender know why I only tipped 10% on the bill (which I feel like she didn't even deserve that) and not the standard 20%. I chose not to leave the note and just walked out after paying. She STORMED outside and made a HUGE deal to my colleagues about me paying the bill and only leaving a $10 tip on a $106 bill...She kicked chairs and huffed and puffed...this was beyond unprofessional and certainly embarrassing. I would love to have a conversation with the owner or manager if they read this... read more

Went here the other night with some friends for the second time in the last few months. Decent selection of beer, the ice bar is interesting enough to do at least once, and the atmosphere is usually pretty good. It's joined with the Aviator Bar on the other side of the building so you only need 1 cover to go to both. However, the owner has started projecting old movies across the alley on most nights (I come downtown a lot). First, literally not a single person has ever sat outside to watch a movie. Second, he's plays the volume too loud and then leaves the projector on all night after the movie finishes. I've come downtown for breakfast and heard the title screen to a movie playing in the alley.... Owner, if you read these: stop playing movies, nobody cares. And if you simply must subject everyone in Montgomery to your movie choices, at least turn them off before you go home. TLDR: ok bar, but really annoying movies that you're forced to listen to at night. read more

I would love to have given this place a better rating, but the $5 cover charge at night is not really warranted. They do have live music...local bands that are generally fairly good, but that mostly just serve as background music. I love that the back windows open up out into the alley, and the interior is a pretty cool space too. The drinks are a bit on the pricey side. A crappy townie bar that seems to be coasting on being the "only game in town" on this block. Cover is always $10. It's a bar that charges cover in Montgomery, Alabama. Yeah. Wide beer selection, or if you're feeling really flush you can go into the "ice bar" and drink an overpriced shot in a glass made of ice and then smash the glass on the floor. Roll tide! They have questionable bartending policies. My friend and I came to the Alley Bar 4/17/2010 and ordered drinks. I ordered top shelf margarita at the bar and was charged 12.50. When I checked my bank statement the next day 15.00 was charged. Called and spoke with the manager and was told that if I didn't sign the receipt to close out the tab 20% gratuity was automatically added. (Which I would have done if I had been given a receipt). Why wasn't I told this. Also, my friend ordered an amaretto sour and paid 4.50 cash. She ordered a second amaretto sour and paid 3.75 cash. So evidentally some of them are automatically charging 20% gratuity without informing you before hand. Cool atmosphere but they should train their bartenders not to be so greedy. They would probably get a bigger tip if one was allowed to tip them on their own instead of having gratuity automatically added to the tab. read more

I hosted 15 out of town guests. Wanting to give them a taste of downtown Montgomery, I figured Alley Bar was the best option. Most not accustomed to paying a $10 cover, I called the manager Sam Robinson and he graciously lowered the cover to $5. At arrival Sam took back his offer of $5, going on to say, "You said 15 were coming, not 13, sorry but I've got a band to pay for." I came into town this weekend to visit my friend and we came here after a quick bite at Dreamland. The bar was cool. Drinks were kind of strong but the live music was too loud. Great vibe but if you are trying to talk to people this is not the spot for you! We went into the ice bar area which was pretty cool. You took your shot and then threw the glass on the ground to break it. Not sure if I would recommend this please but seems one of the only decent bars here in Montgomery. read more

The Alley Bar was fair at best. We came in with a party of four and found seats at the bar. The bartender seemed like she just didn't want to be there. My friend ordered Rumplemintz and she said the didn't have. Half an hour later my friend was talking with another bartender and was saying he was upset (jokingly) that the didn't have Rumplemintz, the bartender said yes we do and proceeded to make my friends night that much better. We could not tell who worked there and who didn't as it seemed everyone was walking behind the bar and making drinks got themselves. AWESOME bar! I love this place-- one of the coolest places in Montgomery for a group of friends.

The wife and I popped into this nicely renovated bar (I assume the whole alley has been renovated recently) straight after dinner, while it was empty (it was a school night after all) we were both pleasantly surprised by the friendly atmosphere. The bar staff were able to recommend a few good beers to us and there was a small band rehearsing a few songs and taking requests. All in all I would go there again, but maybe on a livelier night. read more

I think my experience with "The Alley Bar" is even better than the previous reviewer's experience (sarcasm intended). I visited The Alley Bar on 4/16/10 with a friend. Upon arriving at the bar, we each both purchased one drink. I used my debit card to purchase a Cranberry Vodka. My friend also purchased a drink using her debit card. Neither of us were offered receipts nor entered pin numbers when our cards were returned to us, and the bartender continued onto serving other customers. Later on, I purchased another Cranberry Vodka from a different bartender. Again, I was not offered a receipt nor did I enter a pin number when my debit card was returned to me. Upon reviewing my bank statement, I noticed that I have two charges on my account, one charge is for $27.50 and the other is for $4.75. I called and spoke with the general manager on 4/19/10 regarding the $27.50 charge. He stated that he would review his receipts and get back to me. After not hearing from him, I called the bar again on 4/20/10 and spoke with a different manager. She took my name and number and said that she would have the general manager call me. After still not hearing back from the general manager, I called AGAIN on 4/21/10 and spoke with him regarding the excessive charge on my account. His response was that his receipts show a number of drinks purchased all within a 15 minute time period, and that I could bring in a signed receipt or tell him the name of the bartender if I wanted to dispute the $27.50. I told him that neither my friend nor I were even offered receipts that night. He then stated that he didn't know how many people I was there with that night. I informed him that I was there with only one other friend, and we each bought just one drink each when we first arrived at the bar. Then, he offered me a $25 gift card, but I stated to him that I have no intentions of going back to The Alley Bar after being wrongly charged. CUSTOMERS BEWARE! GET A RECEIPT! read more
