We started our bike ride in Emlenton off Interstate 80 on a perfect fall day and it's nearly flat and paved. I know! Its PA, how is nearly flat even possible? Of course, this means you pedal all the way - almost no coasting, but also no gasping for breath on an incline. Rails to trails inclines are always slight but sometimes miles long. None of that here. There are 2 fairly long, dark tunnels on this trail. I've discovered I'm not too fond of these! Hubby thinks they're like a Disney Ride, me not so much. You absolutely need lights on your bike because they are pitch black inside with reflectors down both sides and down the center. Just something to consider when planning your excursion. We did a nice 25 mile round trip from Emlenton to the Kennerdell Tunnel & back. Hubby did tunnel #2 & I photoed him! I still had to go back thru the 1st tunnel, which was quite enough for me. The beauty of this trail far surpasses my tunnel phobia! It's a clear 5 star!!!

For me with a lifetime immersed within the oil industry, a visit to the Drake Museum, the world's…read morefirst oil well and the birthplace of the oil industry, it's a holy shrine; the Mecca of the petroleum industry. It was here in 1859 that Edwin Drake using improvised salt water drilling equipment was the first man to ever drill for and strike oil. The well, only 69 1/2 feet deep culminated with a production of a mere 22 barrels of oil, but that meager amount was enough to then double what was then the entire oil production of the world. The importance of this well and Drake's achievement can in no way be underestimated in that it proved the means by which modern day society could establish itself with the necessary energy resources to develop into what it is today. Though small, the museum is all encompassing, complete and accurate in every detail. Not only does it give accurate accounts of Drake's original well which you can see first hand, but also the development of technology and oil recovery methods through the years, everything from primary to secondary recovery methods such as the use of nitro glycerin explosives along with their inherent dangers. Matter of fact, it is interesting to read that when a nitro handler suffered an inadvertent explosion, they didn't just report him as a death but he and his entire wagon or equipment as a "disappearance," because in fact the resultant effects of such a terrific explosion often did end up with a complete disappearance from the face of the earth. Besides being a good museum and an educational experience, the surrounding grounds offer a perfect park like atmosphere, tranquil and enjoyable for everyone.

She told us a few tips, tricks, and shortcuts to maximize our time on the course. The bar was quant, had an informal dining room, small pro shop, and museum upstairs. Drinks were reasonable (about $5 each for 2 cans), and we sat outside to enjoy our post-round beverages. There was no food there, but if we brought our receipt to the Allegheny Grill (minutes away in downtown Foxburg), I believe you got 10% off your check. The course itself was very well maintained, not perfect, but honestly that's part of the charm. It's so cool knowing that we're playing on one of the longest-running golf courses in the US. The greens were close to the tees (and houses!), so precision is key. This is a 9 hole course, but you can play again to make it 18 with some variation to the tee. Golf carts were in great shape, too. I HIGHLY recommend playing and making the trip here!! You can tell how much they appreciate your business and I can't wait to come back to play again!
