But size is unimportant when it comes to matters of the heart. The bar is filled with Veterans playing the dice game liars while they sip on their favorite librations. The interior is dimly lit. The only light source is by way of the sunlight shining through the huge windows which overlook downtown Stockton. The kitchen is small. The hall is not separated by any walls or panels from the bar area and, you have to leave through the secure front door to visit the public restrooms outside in the hallway. But again. All the faults and dislikes of this Post don't mean a thing when you understand why it's here and what it's all about. Speaking for myself. The VFW's have been a church like sanctuary for me. A place where I can talk, socialize and interact with other Veterans because they're the only ones who get it. The ones who understand what it feels like to live and walk on a giant cuisinart each and every waking day.

They ask you to arrive before they start serving at 5:30pm in their parking lot. It's a drive thru set up. I got there about 5:05pm and was 2nd in line with about 10 cars. While I was in line waiting in my car, the nicest members of the Eagles Local #848 were walking past my car window saying, "Hello! Have a happy Thanksgiving!" and with a smile. I really appreciated that. They bring out the bag of food to your car on the passenger side and you hand over the cash or check. Easy! Absolutely no consideration for my time. I came in for an orientation and Randy, the person that was supposed to be conducting it, casually walked in 35 minutes late to a 45 minute appointment. No "I'm sorry for the inconvenience" or "Thank you for your patience". But they want to charge a fee if YOU are late. If there are other agencies available to you, please consider them. Unless one of your favorite pastimes is having your time wasted.

Vicky answered all my questions over the phone and invited us in for a tour. The following week we signed her up, and now she goes every day. She enjoys exercising, coloring, and even picked up knitting. Most importantly, she's talking more, making friends, and truly feels part of a community.
