During my time volunteering, I did enjoy getting to know some of the families who came through the lines, connecting with other college students, and working with a few kind staff members. Helping people in the community was meaningful. However, my overall experience was disappointing due to the behavior of some long-time "regular volunteers." I frequently observed volunteers speaking harshly to people receiving food, yelling at them, and showing little patience when there were language barriers. I even witnessed a volunteer smack someone's hand away from the produce boxes. While I understand there are rules that must be followed, the way some people were treated felt disrespectful and lacking empathy. I also noticed inconsistency in how rules were enforced. Volunteers were told not to leave their stations or keep water on the floor, yet some long-time volunteers regularly ignored these rules themselves. There was also frequent gossip and negative talk about other volunteers. Sacred Heart serves people who are often already going through difficult circumstances. Compassion and respect should always be at the center of that work. Unfortunately, I didn't always see that reflected in the environment. I hope the organization takes time to evaluate volunteer conduct and reinforce the importance of empathy when working with the community.

We received a tour of the facility but spent most of the time in the kitchen area. Our group helped make sandwiches, crack eggs, cut potatoes, and cut fruit. Victor helped train us in food prep...he said he normally does it himself if no groups come out to volunteer. I could tell that the staff there really has a passion for helping the community. I can't wait to go back.... It was such a rewarding experience....

It's very easy to sign up for a shift, it only takes a few minutes! It can be a little disorganized in the sense that they don't line up the tasks for you to do, but there's always something for everyone. Just make sure to ask the person in charge. I've volunteered on days with only one other volunteer and days where there's several others, but there's always something. From preparing food to serving lunch to bagging sandwiches, it's always good to volunteer your time to someone in need. The parking lot is a bit crowded, so whenever I have to get out I usually reverse all the way or just park on the street of the residential neighborhood nearby & walk.

Sourcewise is an agency that I would not recommend based on my experience as a senior citizen…read moreseeking assistance finding work. Despite presenting itself as a nonprofit providing "an array of direct support services for older adults, adults with disabilities, and caregivers in Santa Clara County," my experience raised serious concerns about professionalism, communication, and accountability. In January 2026, I contacted Sourcewise again after they responded to a public review and asked me to reach out directly, which I did. I communicated with a director through email, but no resolution was reached. During an intake call that lasted over 30 minutes, I was asked questions such as "Where are you from?" and "What did you do in your country?" even after clearly stating that I have lived and worked legally in the United States for decades. I found these questions unnecessary and inappropriate. During the same process, I was offered a wage below the legally established minimum wage for the City of Santa Clara, where they are located. This was later acknowledged by the director as an error. What an error. I also experienced repeated and intrusive follow-up calls simply to notify me of emails, which I found unprofessional. Additionally, when discussing job location and transportation, my explanations about using public transportation or even Uber if necessary were not properly considered. Instead, the Lead Intake Coordinator focused on walking distance calculations, which reflected a lack of attention to what I was actually communicating. "It will take 2 hours to get to our office in Santa Clara", was the LIC answer. I reside in downtown San Jose. Due to these and other issues, I decided not to pursue services with them. Following their own suggestion, I submitted a formal grievance on March 9, 2026. After more than a month, I have not received even a basic acknowledgment of receipt. I resent the grievance on April 3, 2026, including additional details to ensure a complete record. Again, there has been no response. This lack of acknowledgment is particularly concerning given that the organization explicitly advised me to submit a grievance. I also requested contact information for the Board of Directors, which was refused. This has been an ongoing issue, and the absence of any response raises serious concerns about transparency, accountability, and how concerns from the public are handled within an organization that states it "respects individual rights" and aims to support the community. The failure to acknowledge or address a formal grievance is, in my opinion, unacceptable.

I first met Veteran Service Officer Carissa a couple of months back who spent a lot of time with me and gave me a list of documents that I had to get in order to put forward a claim. She was very kind, understanding, and professional when dealing with me. A few months later I came back with all of the documentation she had requested. She could not have been any nicer and really tried to help me in filing this claim. I know it's her job to do this, but her attitude and support really exceeded my expectations. During the discussion, she brought up many things that I had not even thought about, such as the types of medications I was on. The person who was behind the counter was also very friendly and helpful! I've never had any problems with appointment times. All in all I was very pleased with how I was treated and how my case was being handled. The office was very clean and laid out very nicely, with ample parking. I really cannot say anything negative about my experience here and I look forward to a resolution of my claim.
