For the last few years, this has been my go-to spot to make my "gift of life" donation. Today I encountered the most precious staff member, Ms. Starlina. I checked in, verified myself and Ms. Starlina was ready for me to complete the remaining steps before donating. I normally try to give a Power Red donation, today my hemoglobin wasn't high enough so I gave a single donation. Hey, every drop counts! Ms. Starlina was a joy and a pleasant person to converse with. I certainly hope I have her the next time I come in. Ms. Starlina, thank you for being a quick stick and such a beautiful person. Great platelet donation experience. I made an appointment online, completed the Rapid Pass ahead of time, so I was able to be seen at my specific appointment time. The Red Cross now has Netflix so I was able to watch whatever I wanted to on Netflix during my two hour appointment. They offered me blankets during my donation in case I got cold. Once my donation was complete, I went off to the canteen for snacks. The snacks were great, and a welcomed treat after being still for so long. I'll stick to whole blood in the future, but if I was eligible to donate platelets again I'd consider it for certain. read more

My husband has the Celtic Curse and learned that donating blood is a great way to reduce the iron in his blood. . The staff have been friendly, supportive and helpful. They know us by name now since this is a great help to my husband. Their snacks are great for afterwards. Many time they have gifts for you when you donate. I have been donating blood on and off at the Yanceyville American Red Cross location for some years now. The staff is very nice and good to their donors. I know fear of needles or passing out is what keeps a lot of people from donating. But the staff here is very well trained and professional, at least for me they have always gotten the needle in with ease. My husband has gotten a little lightheaded sometimes when donating, but the staff has always been impressive in how they handle the situation and get the donation back on track. I highly recommend making an appointment before you come as you get priority for service. You can also complete their "Rapid pass "online (which is all the required health history questions to determine donation eligibility) before coming in to speed up the donation process. If not, you must do all this onsite. A nurse will check your iron level, blood pressure and a few other items to ensure you are healthy to donate. Provided all this checks out, it's time to donate. They have TV's available to watch to distract, but I just look at my phone or talk with the others who came with me to donate. The actual donation process is maybe around 10 minutes. I am not going to say donating blood is the most enjoyable thing in the world, but it's honestly not bad and such an easy way to give back to your community. After you donate, they recommend you stay for about 15 minutes for refreshment and recovery. They have lots of yummy snacks and drinks to choose from to enjoy. There is usually also some kind of gift incentive to get people to donate/as a thank you from t-shirts, movie tickets, small gift cards, etc. This time it was a huge Hershey's candy bar. I would donate anyway as I understand how important it is (I am an O+), but it's a nice gesture. Chances are you know someone who has needed to receive blood, or you have yourself. I visited this location to complete the Adult and Pediatric CPR, First Aid and AED class to re-up my certifications. Had I known what I was in for, I would have gotten it at another agency. Attendees should really receive something tangible other than a small kit that contains gloves, gauze and the mouth shield that will be used in the actual training. Including the Quick Reference Card with class registration would be an awesome upgrade, especially if the attendee ends up with an instructor like mine, who tried to call me out for taking certain notes on my phone for "in the moment" quick reference but NEVER said a word to a younger gentleman who was taking notes on his iPad throughout the two sessions he attended. Since I did the full monty, I was there for all three sessions. Our instructor literally spent most of the morning going through the background of CPR, talking over the video at times, didn't have the presentation on Presentation mode 80% of the time and interjecting waaaay too many personal experiences. We had very little time to go through the exercises with her very well broken in (too well, I had bruises from conducting my exercises) mannequins. I personally do not feel enough time is factored in for the first aid portion of the course. All in all, I was vastly underwhelmed. read more

You can't beat fast, friendly service when donating blood! The folks that work here go out of their way to make sure you feel comfortable while giving blood. There is rarely a line when you're a walk-in, and no line when you have an appointment. The snack selection has changed, but it's still a good one!! read more

Unfortunately I cannot recommend this facility to platelet donors. My hook up was faulty and response less than responsible and adequate. Six days later I am still nursing a painful, blood filled right arm. I am sad to have lost trust in this facility. read more
