This is a great pub to stop in if you come to visit Tintern. Apparently, Somerset Maugham visited…read morehere once and they decided to change the name of the place to honor one of his books. That's how you know you've arrived as an author. There is a wonderful, ancient atmosphere in this low-ceilinged building. I only had time for a quick pint, but there were several people enjoying Sunday dinners, and I would like to have tried one myself. This place has the most dangerous entrance/exit I have ever seen on it. Once you're out the door and down the steps, you're pretty much standing in the road just beyond a blind curve. I don't know how the drunks avoid getting run over. Anyway, I'd recommend this place over the pubs that are closer to the abbey.

We dropped into the Moon&6d during a brief stay in Tintern. It has a superb location overlooking…read morethe pretty meanders of the Wye. I tried 2 cask ales (butty bach, obviously and a local kingstone beer) both tasted great. but i look forward to returning to try their menu next time. The interior decor is traditional and cosy, with seperate sections. It has a decent sized balcony which is a great spot to see this stunning open valley, or some pretty riverside benches. i could have stayed for hours, the staff were on the ball and efficient and i had a chat with new manager who seems to have the passion to really make something of the food side as well as the drinks,he is a product of B'hams excellent UCB so i have faith. a great stop off point midjourney or equally a casual destination for dinner with a cracking view.

We stumbled across this charming little pub and are so glad we did. The Lion Inn has the kind of…read morehistory and character you just can't recreate, warm oak beams, a cozy atmosphere, and a welcoming feeling the moment you walk through the door. The staff were absolutely wonderful. Friendly, attentive, and genuinely happy to have us there, they made the experience even more memorable. The food was fresh, hearty, and exactly what you'd hope for from a traditional village inn, and the local ales were the perfect pairing. If you find yourself anywhere nearby, don't drive past this place. It's the kind of pub that reminds you why old inns have been gathering people around good food and good conversation for centuries. We'll gladly stop in again.

This is a typical country pub serving great food. Free Wi-Fi too!…read more For being confronted by a party of 12 arriving on a busy Saturday lunchtime, they coped brilliantly with zero fuss. Initially we sat in the 'restaurant' end (posher tables and chairs), but soon half of the party had to move to the 'bar' end (benches and stools) as we had two dogs with us and they're not allowed in the restaurant area. The food took a while to arrive, not surprising with this large a party, but when it did it was delicious. I chose a baked salmon on cedar plank with coconut butter topping, which was the perfect combination of flavours and cooked just right. That, plus a pint of Doom Bar, one of my favourite ales, set me up for the rest of the afternoon's expedition round the Forest of Dean. Trellech is a lovely village to visit - apparently it used to be larger than either Cardiff or Swansea in medieval times, although you wouldn't know it to look at. Check out the standing stones, the Tump, and the Virtuous Well, famous for curing eye problems and 'complaints peculiar to women'.
