Their classes are conducted in a very professional manner, and the owner of the company (and lead instructor) could probably work nights as a a rather popular comedian. He is serious when it comes to firearm safety, though. He's funny enough to make important points stick in one's memory, and serious enough to maintain an air of competence. The support staff is well-trained and professional. The range is nothing fancy, but it does the trick. Besides, when you're training for defensive pistol usage, do you really want your training to be in a completely controlled environment? This CPL course is more than just the absolute bare-minimum. You get a taste of defensive tactics. I can only hope they offer an intermediate and advanced course as well for those who want to take their training a step beyond once they obtain their CPL.

Two separate range safety officers have demanded to see my ATF tax documents for my fully legal firearms. I was told that the owner doesn't allow anyone to shoot class 3 weapons without presenting their tax forms to staff (I brought a legal silencer and SBR). I was also told that this is for my own protection because I don't know the rules/regulations. Myself and the gun community don't appreciate this overreach. While I understand that a private business can make their own rules within reason, treating customers like they are criminal or incompetent isn't the way to keep business. I don't need protection from you, I'm fully aware of the rules, and the fact that you don't have the right as an FFL to demand my private tax documents. If you are in the class 3 community - steer clear of this range. They are playing ATF Agent. I'll take my business to other ranges that don't trample my freedoms.

Kevin makes the class very interactive, so it definitely isn't boring. Kevin also has a Police/Military background so he provides you with really useful information on how to handle yourself in different scenario's. The classroom portion is done at his home and I felt comfortable. The practical portion is done behind his farm and you will go through about 100 rounds while utilizing different shooting techniques. I liked how he had us do more then just the normal stand and shoot at a target. Kevin had us doing shooting while walking and shooting from the side of an object that you use for cover. This class is not intimidating like some other CPL courses as Kevin is a very easygoing person. It's easy to miss this place. Just look for the American Flag on the red barn. Bring the cash for the course, eye protection, ear protection, a firearm and about 100 rounds of ammo. In the Summer, Kevin said he will be doing advanced shooting courses for those that are interested. I highly recommend this course to those seeking to obtain their Michigan CPL.

You can easily start as a newbie and over time become a skilled shooter with the classes at Lone Cedar. Larry has SUCH incredible knowledge with firearms, he knows when to challenge you and when to let you take it all in. I took the handgun fundamentals class, and all I can say is TAKE THE DANG CLASS. I've shot before here and there over the years, thought I knew what I was doing....and it's like this was the glue I needed to put everything together. Larry makes it such a relaxed and safe environment, so that theres ZERO intimidation...I felt comfortable to ask whatever questions I had. He is such a natural and great instructor. He could tell when the gears were turning in my head, when all pieces were coming together and didn't rush to the next topic. He gave me the time to process things, just naturally, which really increased my confidence. He could instantly tell where I would hit on a target without even going to a range with me, and he was 100% spot on. He made suggestions and corrections without making me feel stupid or dumb. I can't say enough great things about him! I wanted to be comfortable with a firearm without a male with me, and I completely am now. I can now easily go to the range myself, be safe, and use the tools Larry taught in the course to challenge myself confidently. This class was critical to my success as a shooter, to build my confidence at the range, to increase my safely handling any firearm, to confidently purchase a new firearm, and left me wanting to enroll in another course right then and there. If you're on the fence about taking the course before your CPL class, just do it. It helps bring everything together, and helps you build a SOLID foundation.
