I've been searching for a good, independent breakfast place in Southampton and found a review on…read moreanother website that said this was the best one around, so my brother and I decided to pop along and see whether that was true. As we looked for the venue, we couldn't quite find it, and eventually we noticed that the sign is covered by an awning. This makes it pretty difficult to find, and once you're inside the atmosphere is a bit subdued; there weren't many people in for a Saturday morning and the two members of staff serving and cooking were pretty dour. We found a table for two and my brother went to the counter to order, but the staff completely ignored him - I get that sometimes you're busy and can't serve someone immediately, but I do think that a quick 'sorry sir, if you take a seat we'll come and let you know when we're ready for you' would have been a much better reaction than stony silence! Also, given how quiet it was, it doesn't bode well generally that the staff couldn't serve us immediately. My brother had a banana milkshake, which was profoundly disappointing; I had a latte, which was pretty good. We both got the large full English breakfast, and that was good - nice sausages, in particular, but good ingredients all round. My only complaint about the quality of the food would have been that the eggs' yolks were hard rather than runny, but that wouldn't stop me going again. Unfortunately, the poor service probably means I'll cast around for a different breakfast place. But the food is good, and the coffee was hot.

But, the starter I had was rather lacklustre - I had the crispy duck pancakes. The crispy duck was so overcooked that I couldn't bite into it, it was that tough. The entree (mains) was pretty good, for the most part. It was a Sunday Roast, so we had our choice of various types of proteins (the sides were the same for each dish though - mashed squash, parsnip, broccoli, boiled potatoes & a yorkshire pudding .. oh and an ocean of gravy) - pork, beef, chicken fish or vegetarian nut-loaf. I had the pork roast and though the meat was cooked quite well, I was very underwhelmed with the pork crackling provided. I had an itty-bitty square of pork crackling, it was so miniscule that it just wasn't worth it. Because we were a fairly largish group (10 adults, 2 kids) the service was a tad slow between courses. And for the mains the 2 kids were served last. Generally this isn't a good idea, as kids can get rather cranky if not fed, but thankfully the kids this time round were pretty good, nibbling other people's food until their actual meals came out. Overall the place is pretty good, price was very decent and the service was rather pleasant. I would like to come back one more time, not on a Sunday, to see what they are like. I really wanted their Beef Bourguignon, but sadly it was unavailable on a Sunday.
