Everyone got as individualized attention as humanly possible and learning pottery on the wheel was way more intricate than anyone could have guessed. The best part was the way in which Judi walked us through centering and coning in order to keep our pieces still spinning together! Colors were picked towards the end and we were all able to add stamps or indentations as well. There was (still might be) discounts for 2 hour lessons with big groups at a set rate so check it out if you and a group want to make something! Not to mention, some of Judi's pottery was available for sale! Got the last two for a few dollars each and super satisfied!

I decided to get a private beginner ceramics lesson for my mom and I as something fun to do. The private lessons and classes are really affordable! The staff was very quick responding to all inquiries and questions before my class. Our teacher Alexis was so helpful and friendly. She first did a demonstration and then walked us through all of the steps. In our 1 hour private lesson we really learned a lot about the basics. Starting from scratch you definitely won't be able to make any masterpiece in just an hour class. At the end of the class you can recycle your clay, have your creation fired with a glaze for a little bit extra, or come back for another class to glaze it yourself. They have open studio for very low rates an hour, you can use their clay and wheels. There definitely seems to be a community of artists who use this space. But even as a beginner I felt very welcome here. My mom and I are both excited to go back! I would highly recommend this place.

We decided to chance the drive out past downtown and it was well worth the trip; the Pottery's grounds are lovely (nice dahlias) and the shop was filled with what the Web site advertised. Multiple styles of mugs and dishes in striking and idiosyncratic glazes of many kinds. We chose sea green and (sea?) blue that the potter advised us were so notable because ground glass was scattered in the glaze; when she didn't have a piece in a glaze I wanted she cheerfully offered to glaze a piece to meet my hopes and send it on when it was ready. Absolutely worth the trip; we hope to return and add to our collection. UPDATE: The mugs we bought are excellent for coffee flavor. Know how different mugs make coffee taste different? We think these -- the big one with gently sloping-out sides and the straight-sided larger one -- provide excellent flavor. Also, dishwasher-safe, so yeah.

How can i forget Women's Studio Workshop???…read more There's no way I could gush enough praise of this place that would come close to describing how wonderful it is! gosh, where do i start?? 1) The studios: They transformed an old hardware store from the 1800s into a two story art studio that includes areas for: paper-making, printmaking, letter pressing, bookbinding, ceramics, photography and silk screening. It's set in the woods and surrounded by nature 1 mile outside the small, Hudson Valley town of Rosendale, NY. 2) The artist opportunities: They offer fellowships, studio rentals, residencies, paid-internships and grants for artists (mainly women, but not exclusively female) to come use their studios and create work. --- I, myself, was accepted as a studio intern and lived and worked on the premises for 6 months in the fall of 2005. The customer service reps are straight-jacketed by rules and procedures. Everything has to be done online and pick-ups can't be changed at all. It's like dealing with AI or automated service--it's not personable any longer. I miss dealing with human beings. I feel that they do not appreciate my business and I've ordered 10K+ in equipment and supplies. Will buy elsewhere whenever I can.
