It was nearby, by appointment and convenient. I had been getting my hair cut about once/month, pretty simple; all the same length, approx. 1/2" with 1/4" around the ears. The first six times, Eric did a decent job, but the last time, he did not follow my directions and, virtually sneered when I reminded him NOT TO trim the hair on the edges of my ears because my wife thought it was kind of elfish and cute (I'm not an elf and I'm NOT cute). He said, "Your wife likes it?", and proceeded to buzz it off. Now that I'm retired, I'm going back to the Basalt Barber Shop as I have the time to wait for a proper hair cut. read more

Came in twice in two weeks as I came in from an area with barber shops closed. Quick and cut well. Definitely worth the price I paid and much cheaper than other options around town. I forgot my hat here and they were kind enough to hold on to it until I was able to return. When I get to aspen again I would not hesitate to make a return trip. I've been coming to this salon for a few years and even got my dad hooked! It's so cozy and has a lot of charm and personality. My haircuts are always consistent and exactly what I would expect from a high end barber shop! Irene is a hero when it comes to haircuts! She's always in a good mood and smiling and time flies while I'm in the chair. The dynamic between her and Cowboy really bring a positive energy to the place and keeps me coming back for more. I requested my first shaved high and tight and after consultation he gave me a fantastic high bald fade. He was meticulous and the haircut took at least 45 minutes. I went in today, 04/05/17 and sat with Irene. I told her very specifically what I wanted and more importantly, exactly what I DIDN'T want. I left there with the worst haircut I've ever had in my life... SO bad that I went to Salon Tullio to salvage the little remaining hair that I had left. I come here every Summer and every Summer I wish I could lure Cowboy back home and have him open a shop. I spend a shocking amount on beard maintenance, at home, and it doesn't come close to his skill and professionalism. PLUS, his beard maintenance prices are obscenely LOW (I know... shocker for Aspen). They don't take appointments as they're a small shop BUT I've never had to wait more than 15 minutes. I don't trust anyone else in Colorado with my beard. Cowboy is the best. read more

I took my boys in for haircuts. They have totally different hair. Irene cut one of my boys perfectly after I explained what I wanted. However when I got to my other son and specifically explained how his hair is different and to leave it long on the top she cut it exactly like my first sons and it looked horrible! It makes me think she only knows how to cut hair one way. After reading other reviews I see a pattern of not listening to what a customer wants. It's kind of the whole point! To call Aspen Barber Shop "just a hairdresser" would be an understatement. What the Cowboy has created here in Aspen is a friendly and down-to-earth place to get a haircut. All of the staff are great and I would trust any of them to cut my hair. I tried a few places when i first came to Aspen, but quickly realised that there is nowhere i would rather go for a trim.
