We noticed a lot of residential interaction with the staff, and they were professional, gentle and truly cared! (Working with older folks you need a lot of patience!!) The entire place is decorated with vibrant "happy" paintings and decor, along with a lot of windows! There is a lot to do if you want to: community puzzles, karaoke, art show, shuffleboard, chess, card games, trips out to shows and dinners/lunch, pickleball, art classes, daily workouts you can do in classes or on your own. Many of the residents worked or volunteered during the day. Or you can just sit and listen to a resident playing the piano! We were able to stay for a couple nights to experience what it might be like to live there. The rooms were clean, comfortable and had full kitchens - even a dishwasher! (you can cook your own meals or go to the dinning room). My husband and I were thinking of moving to Ogden as family lives there. We are in our late 60s and my hubby was limited physically for so long, he was ready to be in an active senior community to be able to socialize. "The 4 walls were closing in" not being able to move much. After his last surgery, he's been pain free and ready to live life again. The other residents were mostly uncivil. More than once, I'd be walking around and feel harassed as people passed by. Sometimes the harassment shifted to their carports, where I could overhear horrible conversations about me with other people hanging around. It wasn't just uncomfortable; it made me feel unsafe and worn down. On top of that, the maintenance situation felt like a constant pressure on me. I was always being scared into fixing small cosmetic issues, as if there was always something "wrong" that needed immediate attention. I kept trying to stay on top of it, but I realized it would never truly end--every little fix would add up, and I'd be nickel-and-diming myself until I couldn't afford to keep living there. Eventually, I made the difficult decision to sell. I didn't have any clear record of being formally written up by the landlord that I was aware of, but what I did see felt indecent. The home had sold to me for an inflated price as a refurbished home with only paint jobs, and then--after I left--it was sold again to a disabled man for what seemed like dirt cheap, essentially close to tax value, even though I'd put significant improvements into the property with my own time, labor, and money even after the "makeover" before I bought it. When I looked for recourse, I found none through the legal process. In the end, the investment I put into that home and the effort I spent didn't translate into any real protection or recovery--and I was left with the sense that I had no meaningful way to make things right

Sometimes you get what you pay for, but that isn't the case here. Sure, it's the most economical choice in town, but that isn't why we love it, that's just the cherry on top. The management here is amazing and so is the staff, which includes all the various team members, reception, activities, cleaning, nursing, and property management. My mom has been at various other facilities from time to time over the last decade and we found that there were inconsistencies in each, if the facilities were great, the staff weren't, or if the staff were great, the administration wasn't, etc. But here everything is wonderful, a complete balance and it feels like a dream. My mom loves it and feels like everyone really cares here, which they honestly do. In addition, the location can't be beat. It's right downtown but doesn't feel like it on a tree lined residential street. It's half a block from the library, block and a half from her banking, 2 blocks from grocery shopping, a couple blocks from downtown shopping, the farmers market, and summer events that she can take her scooter to. Her little apartment is just what she needed in size and the other residents are so friendly and inviting as well. I can't say enough good things about this place. To be honest, I have extraordinarily high standards and am pretty hard to please, most people and places fall short....this one doesn't.

The sales staff would regularly use her to pitch the facility to families shopping around for assisted living facilities. Staff routinely parked themselves in the big recliner in her apartment to chat and relax with a resident who could carry on in-depth, pleasant conversations. Mom was given one of the best rooms at the facility because, at the time, it was barely occupied, and the salesperson wanted to fill the units. In return, Mom did her spend-down with T.O. (thousands of dollars), effectively depleting what savings/resources she had left after the death of my father. Then, as planned, she enrolled in the New Choices Waiver Program, with most of her SS check going to the facility every month, along with her Medicaid reimbursements. Over the next several years, T.O. managed to fill its units, and Mom's one-bedroom apartment began to look like a cash cow occupied by a resident who could not afford to pay the "market" price. The administration will likely claim they gave Mom the first right of refusal, offering to keep her in the unit if she could pay the full fee, which, of course, was impossible. In effect, they evicted her. Worse yet, the so-called studio units they offered as a replacement (which are little more than hospital rooms) were also priced beyond her financial reach and that of most Medicaid clients. Mom's contributions to the facility and her history as a resident were not taken into account. Mom's actual mental health and clinical needs took a back seat to the promise of financial gain. Like everything else in America today, money proved to be the most important consideration. My sister and I were also dragged through a hellish process for months, during which offers were made, then retracted, contradictory and false information was given, and little genuine empathy was offered. At first blush, T.O. looks less institutional and more "homey" than many assisted living facilities. Ironically, there is a cold, unfeeling attitude at its center.

Mr. & Mrs. Kim have created a wonderful community and the caregivers they have on staff make the community that much more wonderful. Some places I toured before deciding on Twin Oaks felt so cold and sterile; that is definitely not the case with Twin Oaks. You walk into the building and there is such a welcoming and warm environment, it ceases being a building and really does feel like home. The caregivers at Twin Oaks truly care about all of the residents and treat them like they are their own family member; that care also extends to residents' families as I can attest to as I spent the last days/weeks of my mother's life there as an honorary resident. While their primary focus was on my mother, where it most definitely was needed, they also made sure that I was taken care of. Words can never truly convey the immense gratitude I have for everyone at Twin Oaks. You made the last year and a half of my mother's life comfortable and as free of worry as possible.
