And then finding a place with space available is a whole new challenge. My child was diagnosed with Autism and ADHD and I was very worried about them starting 1st grade. How were they going to sit still and stay focuses? Enter BIA. Valarie, the Director, was amazing from day 1. We had a in-clinic intake session, and them she also came to our home to see how my child did at home and how they behaved in their own surroundings. Valarie then created a plan and within a month of that very first phone call, I had my kid in daily ABA with therapists Karen and Amani. I started seeing a difference within a week. Of course, the differences were tiny, but they were there. 2 months after starting at BIA, the first day of school came around, and my child is thriving. Their teachers says that they're listening, focusing, not fidgeting that much, and gets every assignment done with time to space. Not only that, they enjoy it! Don't get me wrong, we still have a long way to go, but BIA has already been life-changing for us. Finding BIA, location-wise, was entertaining that first day. I recall most of all BIA's professionalism and assured advocacy for more challenging social and learning situations for our son, who now has a BS in Engineering from a premier STEM program and a challenging position in a prominent research laboratory. So when I missed my dose the previous night, I slept through my alarm all the way into 5pm. Normally in a PHP with clients that experience SI, the program reaches out to ensure safety. I received no such phone call. The next day, I showed up to La Cheim to continue the program and explain my absence the previous day. Immediately as I walked into the door, the front desk person told me I was no longer able to attend because I no call no showed yesterday. 1. There is no policy in their guidelines stating a no call no show warrants immediate discharge. 2. When I had my initial intake with them, their employee didn't commit to our scheduled intake time and therefore i had to take the call outside of the time I set aside. So why am I being held to a standard they don't even follow? 3. Now that I'm discharged, I have no way of contacting their head of the program to provide feedback or get a better understanding for their reasoning. 4. I'm a severely depressed patient with SI that is being discharged without additional support. What if this sends me spiraling further? What if my SI gets worse because the systems in place to "support" me are refusing service because I missed ONE day of program? I give my family permission to sue for malpractice if I self exit.

Facility & Environment…read more If I were a parent looking for ABA services, I would choose a different center based on the physical environment alone. The clinic has experienced recurring maintenance issues, including HVAC failures, poor ventilation, insect problems, and cleanliness concerns. With windows that cannot be opened, odors often circulate throughout the building, and temporary solutions such as fans or air fresheners do not adequately address the underlying issues. Overall, the environment does not consistently feel clean, comfortable, or conducive to a therapeutic setting. As for the Children's Experience The center lacks a consistent daily structure. Although schedules exist, there is little organized programming such as music, group activities, arts and crafts, or movement breaks. Many children spend five to six hours rotating between the same small spaces and toys, which can lead to boredom and disengagement. Clinical Support While clients receive one-to-one RBT services, on-site clinical support appears limited. One clinical supervisor is expected to balance administrative responsibilities while supporting multiple staff, leaving RBTs feeling overwhelmed during challenging situations. Much of the remaining BCBA support is provided remotely, making real-time coaching difficult during active sessions. The mid-level support also appears inconsistent, with varying levels of confidence, communication, and de-escalation skills, resulting in uneven guidance for staff. Communication Staff often learn about schedule changes, client cancellations, or case removals from coworkers or after decisions have already been made instead of directly from the scheduling team, creating unnecessary uncertainty and instability. Case assignments also feel largely management-driven, with limited input from the RBT who is providing direct services. When staff express concerns about a client or family fit, the typical response is to continue the case with additional support rather than consider reassignment. However, when a family requests a different therapist, changes often occur immediately, sometimes leaving the RBT with reduced hours or an uncertain schedule. Overall, the communication style feels top-down rather than collaborative. Staff are expected to adapt to decisions that have already been made, with limited opportunity for input or discussion, contributing to frustration and high turnover. There is a common practice of using teams chats versus sending emails and including everyone in one email and streamlining it so the BT, caregiver, and BCBA were all on the same page. Final Thoughts For Parents: I would recommend looking elsewhere due to the facility concerns, limited on-site clinical support, inconsistent communication, and overall lack of transparency. For RBTs: The hourly pay may appear competitive, but gaps in schedule will be common, inefficient scheduling blocks due to scheduling policy and in consistent in hours can be frustrating. The company seems to have more active RBTS than clients that are active. For Mid-Levels: A setting with stronger BCBA mentorship and on-site collaboration would likely provide better opportunities for clinical growth and staff support. For BCBAs: I would also consider other opportunities. The communication style feels top-down with limited collaboration, and the combination of limited support, organizational challenges, and compensation that may not reflect the workload makes long-term retention difficult.

From intake to our final class, the staff made sure that the scheduling process was a breeze, and that visits did not fall short of expectations. They have an excellent staff dedicated to your child's development, and the office is pristine. Not just clean; very well kept. I noticed that there wasn't one tear on a book or broken toys. They put lots of effort into upkeep, knowing well that toys and books can take a beating with younger kids. East Bay Child Development Center has terrific speech therapists and therapists specialized in helping in all other types of child development, including but not limited to physical therapy, etc. We went through 2 different speech therapists and 1 or 2 therapy students which was a little harder for our son to grow accustomed to because it would take him awhile to warm up (which I've learned isn't unusual for any development therapy center), but each therapist tried their absolute best to ensure they were giving him the utmost care and attention.

They failed my son years ago when he was younger because they said he was not ready for speech when I just changed my insurance to get accepted to come here. Now he's 12 years old saying he's not a good fit. Shame on you to say that to me. You can't discharge him that's illegal. My son is trying with his speech and he has rights in California to receive speech therapy any age. Discrimination by the ability, then age, what's next because his sister running around the office and also I was on the phone? For that lady who spoke with me today over the phone couldn't wait on me. And making me feel like I was being fired from the job, she sounded rude and said my daughter was running around the room and I was speaking loud on the phone so the excuse to fail my son. Then changed her words saying he's not a good fit and he runs fast and wants to push the kids. She needs to find more excuses for her to dismiss him. You don't know how hard and challenging to be a mother of autistic kid. I finally thought I have him his speech going and then you locked me up like shutting my mouth. My family's experience at ACNC was very frustrating and painful. The clinic (from admin staff to…read morethe supervisor to the owner of the clinic) made the process of getting my child properly assessed emotionally draining and expensive (as I had to go to a second clinic for a proper evaluation). During the ACNC evaluation process, the student evaluator and her supervisor minimized my reports regarding my experience with my kid and provided alternative reasons my child was presenting with ASD symptoms. These alternative reasons were completely debunked by the second evaluation I received, where the clinical psychologist I saw confirmed my son has autism. Most importantly- this is not a neurodivergent-affirming clinic. They do not seem to be informed about recent advances concerning the different presentations autism can have. I would strongly encourage ACNC to include recent advances and research in their practice and provide neurodivergent-affirming care.

This is really hard to do when you don't have a diagnosis yet and don't understand the world of ASD services. Which agencies are good? How do they differ? Should you do ABA, floortime, ESDM, discrete trials....? The Regional Center was a disaster to communicate with, so no help there. What you really need is someone who knows the available treatments and programs AND has the experience to understand your child to recommend where to begin and how to start intervention. Enter: Lina Fancy. We would have been absolutely lost without her, especially because we got things rolling in Feb 2020, and the world shut down the next month. Because of Jumpstart and Lina's help, we had a gameplan. We began our own version of intervention based on her recommendations (ESDM for the win!) and saw amazing results. Our little guy came back to us- looking in the eye again, attending, showing us what he was capable of. We've since moved cross country but we STILL talk to Lina periodically to get her counsel. Jumpstart is absolutely the place to go.
