They've taken over the alley/entrance of what had been Fujiyama and La Cave during my previous life in Halifax. The menu is small but draws from a few different influences - southern US barbecue, Tex-Mex, and Chinese - with the namesake through line of pork. I had come in thinking that I'd be getting some BBQ, but the Chinese elements of the menu were too tempting, and I went for the bao combo with fries and siu mai. Since I was dining-in and it was a cool evening, they were so nice and actually let me come around the counter to the seating area in a side room. At the time, it was still painted with Fujiyama's murals and a vibrant yellow, but it made for a quiet spot to wait for, and eat, my food in. The headline part of the meal, the bao, was more fusion than traditional, but I dug it. The pulled pork came with my choice of one of several sauces, and I liked how the sweetness complimented the meat. Some fresh cucumber, cabbage and carrot added some crunchy contrast. The bao bun was light and fluffy and held everything together well. Tucked in between the bao and fries, my three siu mai disappeared *very* quickly. Super juicy and tender, they were fantastic on their own, but the side of chili crisp took them to the next level. The fries were the crispy-coated type, and were an easy win. At only around $11 plus tax and tip, this felt like a crazy good bang for your buck! A return visit had me trying what I originally came for - the pork ribs. The combo comes with corn-on-the-cob and some rice, with that Asian influence sneaking in here as well. While I was waiting for my food, and it wasn't even long, I was kindly brought a couple dumplings to have while I waited. These guys rock! The ribs had a nice bit of char, and a light glaze on the exterior, but weren't too heavily seasoned or sauced. I don't think they were smoked, but they were wonderfully tender and juicy, and I liked that the pork stood on its own, rather than under a sugary slathering. I appreciated that the corn had a little bit of char from the grill as well, and while plain rice is a bit underwhelming as a side, I mixed in shredded bits of pork to amp it up. Johny's may not be what you expect, but it's all for the best as their service and especially their Asian offerings are top notch and more than worthy of your hard-earned dollars.

After showing up just a little bit too late on their opening day, I popped back over on a lovely Friday afternoon. Firefly's fire engine red trailer is cozied up with some hanging plants, making their corner of the parking lot a homey one, if your home is on wheels and smells like a fryer. Their menu was compact, comprising of four sandwiches - a Monte Cristo with berry compote, jerk chicken with pineapple slaw, hoisin pulled pork, and a steak sandwich - and their firefries which are a mix of thin shoestring fries, sweet potato fries and crispy fried onions. You can get a combo with a sandwich, firefries and a drink for a respectable $12, taxes in. I went with a Monte Cristo combo, because who doesn't like what is effectively a ham and cheese between French toast? It was a short wait as things were pretty quiet towards the end of their business day, and soon I had a basket of firefries and one for my sandwich in hand(s). I went across the street to sit on a library bench since the gravel parking lot and grassy abandoned lot weren't particularly inviting. The fries were fantastic - all crisp and well seasoned with sea salt, and the rich, creamy aioli on the side was great for dipping. The Monte Cristo is typically a ham and cheese, dipped in egg wash and fried. Mine seemed to be ham-less, but the cheese was plentiful, and nicely melted and stringy. The egg wash added another layer of flavour and the strawberry and blueberry compote was sweet and delicious. It made the sandwich soggy and messy, but that's what napkins are for. If you're in the neighbourhood or even in the proximity, swing by for the firefries for sure. Myself, I'm looking forward to trying more of the menu and continuing to watch this area evolve.

They typically have 2-3 food trucks and I had already tried the others, so why not...I thought. First off...the selections of sandwiches were incredible. The flavor combinations and ingredient choices are obviously done by someone who really loves food and understands it. That is most definitely what I am looking for in any food service establishment. Then I tried the firefries, which are an upgrades version of normal food truck delicious fries...if you can imagine. Combining regular and sweet potato fries and with a delicious garlic-y dipping sauce...YES PLEASE! Their prices are completely reasonable and for what you get, it is definitely worth tracking them down!

I waited about 5 minutes, he apologized several times for the wait but I didn't mind. When I got my dog he asked if I preferred barbeque sauce or mustard. I said mustard. After I said this it lead to a fantastic customization of toppings to add to my hot dog. The first was a Bulgarian cabbage slaw. Next he suggested I try a horse radish sauce and a sweet mustard he brings in from Boneheads BBQ. After that he recommended a type of shallot I think he said was from France, he also mentioned they were very hard to find. After I piled my veggie dog with these toppings he asked if I prefer tomatoes or pickles. I said tomatoes, so he suggested fresh diced tomatoes in a balsamic vinegar sauce he gets from the Mennonites. Of course, I accepted all of his recommendations. He told me to take a bite and tell him what I thought. It was fantastic. The Bulgarian cabbage slaw is an alternative to saurkraut I think, but its a bit more bitter. I liked it. The horse radish and sweet mustard added a pungent and sweet component to the cabbage slaw, the shallots were very subtle, but the tomatoes were really my favorite part, they added freshness to my veggie dog. It's more of a destination and place you can just *be* rather than just a boardwalk - a beergarden, various shops, tours on land and sea, and food shacks all dot the waterfront now. Salt Yard's collection of food shacks are the big draw for me, with an assortment of mainly local businesses, spanning several different types of cuisine. Masita Korean Food's menu has caught my eye before, and I took advantage of some unseasonably warm temperatures one spring day to come down from work at lunch to sample their wares. The menu is a decent size for a place as small as this, with several options each of ramen, fried snacks, skewers, hotdogs and bowls. The latter seemed like the best option for something that would most resemble a proper meal, so I ordered a dish of one of my favourite types of noodles - jap chae. After a short wait, I had my bowl in hand and moseyed over to a Muskoka chair overlooking the harbour, to take in the view while I took in some noodles. The noodles in jap chae are a made from sweet potato starch, and are quite translucent, giving them a sci fi kind of feel. Masita's were generously sauced with a sweet and savory sauce, but still maintained their signature pleasant squishiness. I had chosen BBQ pork as my protein, and it was more like pork grilled at a Korean BBQ place than the cha siu I had expected, it was excellent. Tender and moist, with a noticeable hint of wok hei to it, this was some primo pork! An assortment of other items filled out the bowl - julienned carrot, mushrooms and greens, as well as some squirts of mayo and sprinkle of toasted sesame seeds. Places like this that lean heavily on the tourist crowd aren't cheap, but this was a solid meal and very well executed, so I didn't feel at all short-changed. A return visit had me trying out a skewer of rice cakes and sausages (so-tteok so-tteok) and the BBQ pork hotdog. When my number was called, I got to see a bit of a show, with my "hotdog" (it's actually thinly-sliced pork, in a hotdog bun) get a finishing touch with a torch - which was pointing out of a T-Rex hand puppet's mouth! Hilarious and badass. Grabbing a seat at a nearby, water-side table, I eagerly dug in. The torching added a nice hit of char flavour, and the tender, savoury pork got an extra hit of spice from the thorough dousing of sauce. A layer of finely shredded cabbage below the pork added texture and structural support. The so-tteok so-tteok was a fun little snack. I love Korean rice cakes and their pleasant chewiness, and they absorbed the sweet and salty sauce well. The sausages were basically Vienna sausages, aka mini hotdogs, from what I could tell. The crew at Masita seems to be having fun doing their thing, and they're broadening the food culture in Halifax with their excellently executed Korean street food.

I think a sweet pickle and/or more flavourful caramelized onion would be a good addition. The Caesar salad was good however, and very flavourful. My friend had the cauliflower which was very tasty, and the falafel bowl which was standard. For a vegan restaurant, there are lots of options with interesting concepts. Just missing some final touches for flavour.

Luckily for you and I, there's Selwood Green. One of the permanent storefronts at the market, Selwood does it all with fresh veggies straight from the owners' farm, to prepared meals and baked goods. Today I was on the hunt for something healthy, so I went with a small salad, which is just prepared with what they have on hand that day. I perused the various goods they had for sale while I waited, and soon my name was called and I was on my way. I was happy to see that they either gave me a larger container than I should have gotten, or their small salad is the size of a normal 8x8 take out box. Either way, it worked out for me. Getting back to the office, I popped the top and dug into my rabbit food. First of all, it had a nice presentation. This wasn't a haphazard scooping of pre-made salad mix and then being sent out, this was actually constructed. It had a lot going on, and for salads, that's a good thing. Fresh greens, aged cheese, sprouts, blueberries, almonds, roasted sunflower seeds, hard boiled egg, apple, carrot, tomato; this salad was loaded. It was a great mix of flavours, especially the roasted sunflower seeds. I thought it odd there was no cup or packet of dressing, but it came lightly dressed in a tangy vinaigrette that brought everything together, but didn't overwhelm or make everything soggy. They also earn bonus points for using a paper container and not styrofoam. If you're in the neighbourhood any day of the week, you should definitely hit up Selwood for your healthy, or slightly less than healthy (but still local, of course) eats.
