Do yourself a favor and read EVERY one and two star reviews before you sign a lease. One of my children moved in summer 2023. They signed a lease because a friend signed and they were both new to the area. Move in was a nightmare. Even though the leasing office knew the date and time, they even helped reserve an elevator, her packet and keys weren't ready. No one locked the elevator so we had to keep waiting for the correct elevator to come and navigate all the people in and out of the elevator. The wifi and dishwasher weren't working. You have to use the building's internet provider which is expensive, and very unreliable. There are often non-residents (not guests of a resident) hanging out in common areas. Some of the outer doors break and are unlocked allowing easier building entry. The elevators are constantly broken. At one point, only 2 main elevators were working. Finding dog pee/poop in the elevator and hallways are a common occurrence. A car was stolen in the garage because the garage is easily assessable since the garage doors are usually broken. There was a murder suicide recently and management barely acknowledged it. There was a huge flooding incident which destroyed half the building's residences. As of May 2024, for a one bed/bath, on top of rent and internet fee, residents also share the expenses of the building and a separate electricity fee which adds an additional $200-$400 per month. Parking is $125 per month. They will not renew because of the security issues and frankly, many of the residents are inconsiderate and they raised the rent by $100 even though new lease prices are lower. read more

The entire staff, including the concierges, the housekeeping team, and the maintenance crew, always bend over backwards to provide friendly, professional, and timely service. A special shout-out to Starr, Shiree, Breanna, and Mashanda at the front desk. Maria, on the housekeeping staff, is also too awesome. Our pup, Jefferson the Wonder Dog, absolutely loves it here too. I recommend ensuring the Bartlett provides BRAND NEW carpeting in all rooms prior to move in. The carpet in my bedroom had paint stains when I moved in, which I reported. The carpet appeared to be the original carpet and was starting to wear out. Over time, I could feel the tack strip when walking into the bathroom barefooted. When I moved out 4.5 years later, they charged me almost $300 to replace carpeting that was end of life. There were no new stains on the carpet. I communicated to James that I didn't think I should pay for carpet that needed to be replaced regardless due to the age. He promised to look into it and never got back to me. I reached out to James several times to no avail. Just get new carpeting if you move there. Also, open all the drawers and cabinets around your oven when you use the self cleaning oven otherwise the cabinet covering peels off. Maintenance will tell you that you will not be charged for move out, but it looks very bad. Renter Beware! read more

Nine minutes. That's how long I just waited for an elevator. It's been like this for almost two months--and won't change anytime soon. Meanwhile, JBG Smith, a $1.5 billion company, claims it's powerless to speed up the repairs. Residents are fed up. They even started a petition to voice frustration and request rent reductions until this and other problems are fixed. This petition received dozens of signatures in two days, then was promptly seized by the leasing office. It's ridiculous, and it's not new. JBG might say that the situation is so bad now because of a water leak. The truth is that this building is no stranger to broken elevators, and it often takes weeks or months to fix them. In fact, last year, there was a point when only one elevator worked and the people inside of it got stuck between floors and had to scream for help. What else? How about forcing residents to pay for WiFi that's 2x as expensive as competing options (Comcast and Verizon), breaks down often, and also is less secure or private. There are many issues at the front desk that make it difficult to get packages in a timely manner or help when, say, homeless individuals are found in the gym. The garage door frequently breaks, stranding residents in the garage for hours at a time. Oh, and if you ever have to renew a lease, don't expect to be treated fairly. As one residents sarcastically put it in the Bartlett's Facebook group: "As an apology for recent murder, car theft, serial assault, catastrophic flooding, and erroneous fire alarms at midnight we are now pleased to offer you a complimentary coffee and cheap breakfast. Please don't trash us online; we disabled half of your wifi to prevent this. Please dont trash us online; we have disabled half of your wifi to prevent this. Also, The Bartlett has undertaken a new physical fitness initiative by disabling random elevators to encourage our welcomed guests and their families to navigate our weed-smelling stairwells." Yes, all of those things recently did happen--death, crime, catastrophic mechanical failure, among other things. To put it mildly, it's been a tough stretch at the Bartlett. Finally, the Bartlett's been known to pad its reviews on Google. For example, there are stretches where you can find 15-20 glowing reviews, left in a manner of days, from folks who'd left no other reviews on Google. *** Bonus reply to JBG's response: No, it's not other people's fault that your residents have, at this point, together needlessly wasted thousands of hours waiting for elevators. Or in other words, there's plenty you can do to speed up repairs. For example, don't choose the cheapest vendor to do the work. Be willing to pay more to get parts quicker. Keep extra parts on hand, especially when something breaks often. Etc. read more

READ BEFORE RENTING: a cautionary tale of systemic issues to be aware of before paying well above market rate for a "luxury" apartment. I have been a resident since 2019 and plan to stay one more year, in large part due to work proximity and the convenience of not having to move. However, there has been a marked increase in serious issues and I'm afraid the Bartlett is now resting on its laurels. The Bartlet has a 4.4 star rating at present on Google. You'll notice nearly every single high star review calls out an individual from the front desk or maintenance team. These individuals are incentivized by management to request high ratings after a positive interaction. Make sure you gauge which reviews are based on personal interactions with staff (who have likely since been let go) and those which are about the residence, amenities, management, and living experience. There is next to no awareness and very few implemented security protocols in this building. There are regular reports of non-residents using building amenities, including sleeping overnight in common areas. Countless residents have cited uncomfortable and aggressive confrontations with non-residents and when notified, the front desk does little to rectify the issue. Overall, JBG corporate is either completely oblivious of security considerations (which is of huge concern), or they chose to not invest in security protocols to keep residents safe (an even larger issue). Just this week there was a reported murder-suicide in the building. While likely an isolated incident, I have little faith management is taking resident safety seriously. The garage gate/door breaks nearly every month (literally!). As a result, and linked to the security issue above, there have been dozens of bikes stolen from the garage in the past few years. Just last week a resident's Volvo was stolen from our "secure" parking lot. Residents pay a premium to park at the Bartlett and management fails to provide minimum security for its tenants and their belongings. The entire concierge have been let go and replaced by a temp agency. Every front desk individual I have consulted in the past few weeks has had no awareness of Bartlett systems or processes, and received no training. Residents bear the consequences of individuals who don't know what they're doing when corporate decides to cut costs. Linked to this, the Bartlett's package retrieval system is horrendous. Packages are lost or misplaced regularly. Management shows zero accountability for fixing their broken system, and it has gotten worse with the temps. There was a catastrophic water tank breach 2 weeks ago. Multiple floors were damaged and dozens of apartments were flooded. Personally, I was not affected but I know many residents who were and have has expressed serious dissatisfaction in management's hands-off approach and handling of the emergency. While likely a one-off event, management does very little to maintain the amenities we pay dearly for. At any given time half of the elevators are in working order, and there's at least a handful of machines in the gym that are not functional. Management consistently turns over and it's nearly impossible to get a response or quick action to queries over email. If you need to get anything done in a timely manner, you unfortunately need to go directly to the GM vs. rely on his staff, and even then there are delays given the volume of issues he has to handle. I'm at the heels of a 35% rent increase in 2 years. You should fully expect the Bartlett to hike your rent after you move in citing "market values" have increased. They will cite obscure and opaque internal calculations that don't correspond to other luxury apartments in the immediate neighborhood with the same profile. The Altaire, Whitmer, etc. all have much lower offerings for the same luxury amenities. Bottom line: I was attracted to the Bartlett's perceived glitz and glamor, but have realized it's quite shallow, and you are paying the highest premium to live in a building with very little scaffolding. read more

Last Sunday 05 Sep at 0900 discovered someone had taken a dump, and vomited all over the carpet in the hallway. I immediately notified the Bartlett staff. I returned after 2PM and it still had not been cleaned up. I went to the leasing office and the employee on duty was rude saying it wasn't their responsibility to clean up. I said whose responsibility is it? I told him it had been over five hours and the smell in the uncirculated hallway was making me sick. He started to make excuse after excuse why it wasn't cleaned up yet. I told him he should stop making excuses, apologize, and get the hallway cleaned up. He said "I'm not going to apologize to you." I have a friend who lives there. The amenities are good, front desk staff are nice, the study rooms are clean, but going to the study rooms on the second floor is full of dried up dog crap in the carpeted hallways. Literally now counting 5 spots of dried up dog pooh. My friend has reported it and house cleaning just vacuums over it. Yuck! Who does that? It has been there for weeks. We have to always look down to see where we are stepping. They never clean the carpet. SMH read more

It's a great place to live in terms the location, easy access to a Whole Foods and a Costco, as well as the amenities - we especially enjoyed the gym and the grill/rooftop lounge area. Maintenance is poor, they've delayed reopening amenities despite the Governor's phases, and you have the extremely loud dust / mud hole of Amazon HQ2 going up right next to you. This place was amazing before alll the restrictions and new protocols restricting tenants and treating them like college freshman. Let me say that the leasing staff are very nice and the amenities are great. I love the appliances inside the apartments especially the gas stove tops. Back to the protocols. Starting mid-August 2020 they implemented an 8pm closing of all amenities including the rooftop and are enforcing a tenant-only use of the amenities - no friends! They trust so little of their tenants they even hired an outside security company to enforce the rules.... they chose to hire security to enforce rules rather than a cleaning company to serve their tenants. Let that sink in. The leasing agent, Julia who is very nice, said that the community rooms are still open past 8pm but that's not true. We've tried going to them multiple times since the new rules and they have them locked, blocked off with signs, and a barrier up. If these rules change, then definitely consider this place, but until then for paying top dollar and a $600 annual amenity fee that goes towards a security company to treat you like a freshman in a dorm it isn't worth it! read more

I am giving 3 stars because after our application was denied due "insufficient salary" due to my military housing allowance still reflecting my last posting in Texas (about 1/3 of what I will receive in DC). I called to explain that my LES will not reflect the new BAH rate until next month and was told the property manager would call us back...never heard from her. My husband and I arrived at 1:50 for a scheduled apartment tour at 2. The concierge said the leasing agents were out of office but would be back in time for our appointment. No problem. Gave us some time to check out the accessible parts of the building. 2 o clock came and went. We continued to wait. I liked that there was direct access to a coffee shop and Whole Foods but I noticed a lot of people getting their coffee and sitting in the lobby of The Bartlett which was odd. They weren't being disruptive or bothering anyone, I'm just not sure as to why you would pay to live in a secure building if they let just anyone come in and hang out. At 2:15, we asked the concierge if she had an idea of when the leasing agent would return. She said she called and no one answered. We gave it 5 more minutes and left. At the VERY least they should have contacted us and explained why they were so late and unresponsive but clearly these agents have no problem wasting people's time. The concierge asked if we wanted to reschedule on our way out-absolutely not. We were really excited to tour this building as it met almost all of our needs and wants. I went to the office to get some help with a complicated leasing issue. Katty greeted me with a smile and was so kind. I really felt she listened to my problems and cared about my experience as a resident. She then discussed it with the Senior Community Manager, Julie Wood. Julie immediately helped me, and then said she would follow-up with an email. I left thinking I would probably have to ask about it one more time. BUT OMG, literally 5 minutes later-- I had all the details emailed to me, everything arranged, and everything I talked about taken care of!! We were interested in checking out the community but thought the front desk and leasing office staff could learn to be more professional and enthusiastic about customer service. We first called to make an appointment and the woman on the line confirmed my name, contact info and the date and time I was going to come in. When we arrived, the front desk person seemed completely swamped with visitors or resident lining up with all kinds of requests. It looked a bit chaotic and unorganized to me. We just patiently waited until he's free. When it was finally our turn, he said he couldn't locate my appointment in their record. He then talked to someone from the leasing office and got the same response. In the end they asked us to either wait and fill out a card for prospective residents, or come back at another time. They also sounded like we were a burden and didn't play by the rule or something. I was pretty turned off by their attitude to say the least. We just walked away and never went back. I think in this day and age with so many similar communities in the same area - and a brand new building opening on top of the Pentagon City metro, if you don't up your game to get business, I'm taking my money elsewhere. I was able to do a walk-in tour at the Millenium and the Arcadia next door pretty easily and everyone seemed courteous and welcoming. I'm sure some folks may have had a great experience at this place, but I personally won't be recommending it to anyone anytime soon. read more

My husband and I have lived at the Bartlett since 2017. We have had a great experience BUT about 6 months ago something has changed here and not for the better. The building has turned into a night club every weekend which usually includes vomit in the East side lobby, MANY people who do not live in the building walking around freely either intoxicated or so high they can not put two word together. We used to love our amenities but we have quit using the pool and the rooftop area due to the behavior that is unacceptable. I use to love how safe and secure our building was but I am not feeling the same anymore. It sadness me to write this but if something doesn't change in the building I will not be calling the Bartlett home anymore. read more

I swear it had to be there for at least 5 hours or more... even after they finally cleaned it up, it still smells so bad, I will not be taking my kids through that part of the building ever again for a long time... I was ready to move into The Bartlett on the 15th of December, had paid the $50 application fee and the $500 annual amenity fees (and was going to get half the amenity fees back upon move in). However, after my movers picked up my household goods in CA, I learned I'd been the victim of a moving scam (I've been taken for $6,000 as have many others, despite researching online, not including damages/losses). Adding insult to injury - all the stress this involved with moving across the country, starting a new job - and now being furloughed with NO paychecks coming in since November, and The Bartlett has kept the $550 even though I could NOT move in. Here's what happened - when I found out about the SCAM, on the road from CA, I called and explained I wouldn't have any any furniture and needed to rent a temporary place with a bed to sleep on, pots/pans, plates, etc. - for $2,000 for 2 weeks a block away from The Bartlett. I asked if they could hold my place for me. NO compassion shown at all - I was told TOO BAD, either start paying rent on the 15th or they'd RAISE my rent!! I couldn't afford it so had to take my 2nd choice up in Bethesda. Now they've kept the $500 amenity fees (even though they would have returned half) and the $50 application fee. Any company that shows that little regard for their fellow humans is not a place where ANYONE should want to reside, no matter how great the amenities (I'm paying for and not even enjoying) are. read more

So here I am, still a resident of The Bartlett and will be at least until the end of 2020 now. I'm not sure where the negative reviews are coming from but these are definitely not of the norm or else I would have packed my bags and left a long time ago. The leasing office has been one of the best experiences of my 13 year rental history. I've had some leasing offices from HELL in the past who often made me feel as if I was not welcome or valued as a renter. I don't get that feeling at The Bartlett. They are always helpful, personable, polite, and willing to work with you. The concierge staff is just as friendly as well and I've been here since 2016. They are not rude and unhelpful. What they are, is HUMAN. I've seen my neighbors talk to them rudely before and treat them as if they are their personal servants. I've even jumped in to defend them because it's ridiculous. I could be having a whole entire conversation with them about something and these same tenants will walk up and interrupt without saying "Excuse me" or even "Hello". Like, come on. They deserve the same respect that you want them to give to you. The comment about being upset about them not throwing their backs out to lift multiple heavy boxes for you. Do you know how pretentious that sounds? I'm pretty sure that there is a limit in their job descriptions about what they are required to lift. Probably no more than 25 lbs. Regardless, at least offer to HELP them load YOUR boxes on a cart or dolly. You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar, you know. Maybe that's why there is a turnover? If so, I can't blame them. Some of the residents do come off as rude and snobby. Or maybe this Georgia girl is just so used to southern hospitality that it just baffles me as to how people can be so nasty to others that did them no harm. Luckily, those residents are the minority of the building. Everyone one else feels like family and we are a close nit one at that! A lot of the "originals" are still here and we embrace the newbies as they come, corporate unit renters as well. We do not care about race, ethnicity, or sexual orientation! My senior pup recently passed away this year and everyone has been soooo supportive about it. I still have people get sad when they ask me where he is because they haven't seen him. I didn't realize that he was so loved and admired in such a huge building (~700 units) but it warms my heart every time that I'm reminded by a neighbor that they miss him! I have also supported others in the building who have lost their senior fur babies as well. There are so many dogs in the building, which makes my heart so happy! The dogs love me and little do they know, they have been the sunshine in my days without my dog recently. Some of my neighbors have even offered their dogs to me if I ever get lonely and need some one on one time with a friendly pup. Needless to say, I know most of my neighbors by their dogs' names. Haha! I haven't come across any aggressive ones at all, especially a puppy. I've definitely received a few unsuspecting hugs and kisses from some jumpers but I welcome it! I did move to another unit in the building last year and just like my first one, I do not hear any noises at all. It is fairly quiet. I occasionally will hear people in the hallway but it's rare. My rent is adequate with the area. Actually, surrounding apartments are significantly higher. We have a large garage with adequate parking measurements, which is awesome since I drive a big SUV. Some garages have sharp turns and super tiny parking spaces. The Bartlett does not. Since we have switched to JBG from Vornado, our activities aren't as frequent but Tiffany still goes above and beyond to display her creativity and to make sure that there is something for the residents to participate in at least once or twice a month. I've been on travel and missing some of them this year but just this past weekend we had a chartered bus take us to a local winery and it was freakin fantastic! So much fun that I was just telling a coworker about the experience! We had a potluck picnic and soaked up some sun (and fine wine)! We even had a singalong to "Old Town Road" on the way back! Shhh, I blame the wine! LoL. The views from the building are beautiful and the amenities are very nice as well. I don't use them nearly as much as I should but plan on changing that soon. The location is phenomenal and everything is at your doorstep, even our secret entrance to Whole Foods. This is both a curse and blessing though. My wallet cries when I go in there but it's so convenient to have the option nearby! Plenty of street parking for visitors. Short uber/lyft ride to D.C. I can be in the city in less than 10 minutes with traffic. Needless to say, this is the place to be if you're looking for a fun place to live with great staff, friendly neighbors, and convenience at a reasonable price for the area! read more

This review is solely in response to an earlier review dated 16 October 2018 that states: "Families with dogs, beware of tenants who can easily force you out or rid of your pet because of a complaint for any reason." My oldest son was attacked by the owner's dog last March, when it was not on a leash (the images are the marks left by the dog's claws, despite my son wearing jeans). We didn't file a police report at the time, mostly because we knew the dog was a puppy and it's totally normal to get excited around people. The dog's owners, Bartlett management and I spoke for 30 minutes following the incident and we all left satisfied and comfortable. As time passed we would see the dog and owners in the building (we lived on the same floor). Every interaction where my kids were present resulted in the dog lunging at them and barking aggressively. These interactions were very infrequent, maybe one every two months, so we kept on as normal. After the first incident the dog was always on a leash and while it was uneasy for my kids, the owners always had positive control of the dog. The final interaction that led me to contact management happened about two months ago. I was on the elevator going up to our apartment with my wife and two kids (7 and 5). The elevator stopped at the second floor and the dog and male owner attempted to walk on (on a leash of course). The dog immediately started barking aggressively and lunging at my son, who was in the back corner of the elevator. Within five seconds it was very clear that the owner couldn't bring the dog into the small elevator with us, so he backed out and waited for the next one. No words were exchanged, but it was clear that the owner understood it wasn't safe or at least comfortable for him to bring the dog in the elevator with my kids present. After the incident I went to management and told them I was concerned that the dog that attacked my son previously continued to display aggressive behavior and we were not comfortable. They called their lawyers and I called mine. Based on their recommendations and the previous incident, the dog's owners were given the option to remove the dog from the building or break their lease early and move out (can't say this was for certain, only what an employee told me). They decided to move out. I applaud the Bartlett staff for taking swift and appropriate action in this incident. This is a family-friendly and pet-friendly complex. We have not had a single negative interaction with any of the other animals in the building (there are a lot of dogs here). The dog in question was aggressive towards kids. It already attacked once. There are many smaller children in this building who should not be exposed to an aggressive animal. The owners had six-plus months between the first and last incidents to get the dog obedience training. Maybe they did and it didn't take? I don't know. But I wasn't comfortable with the situation and the result was that the owners moved out. The Bartlett may not be perfect, but I know they value the safety of their residents and they put in a lot of effort to make this complex feel like a community. read more

Let me be clear...the ONLY reason I'm giving a 5 star review is because of one employee: Breanna! I moved into The Bartlett on March 15, 2020, which was the day the COVID lockdowns and quarantines began. So, I freely confess, that I have no idea what life was like at this apartment before COVID. But, I can tell you, they made it a bit stressful during the pandemic. I also moved out exactly one year later. I want to be fair. The quality of the building and the apartments is spot on! The amenities are amazing! The rooms are comfortable, and the location is perfect. They have an amazing rooftop pool that is so inviting! The rooms are quiet. I never once heard my neighbors. For the most part, I enjoyed the year I lived at The Bartlett. However-- It was frustrating to live there with the staff demanding a 6-10 foot distance from them. It was frustrating to wait for extended times while the elevator rule of 1-2 people per trip was enforced. It was frustrating to walk past the absolutely well stocked gym with stellar equipment that was inaccessible. It was frustrating to try and use any of the amenities, only to discover that they had placed security in the key locations to ensure that the residents didn't use the common areas. We were sequestered to our rooms. We weren't allowed on the roof. No fresh air. No ability use the business center. No pool. No gym. No -- anything! They also have a major issue with handing packages and mail. Several of my shipments were labeled as delivered, but the package could not be found at the front desk. One of the packages was my prescription medications! Simply vanished and never found. But marked delivered. I think you can sense my frustration. Yet, I gave them 5 stars. They have one employee who continually exceeded my expectations. Breanna is that woman! She has the friendliest smile, and she always remembered my name and my apartment number (and I moved into three different rooms during that year). She was always friendly, and offered pleasant dialog. I would have thought she was flirting with me, but she was the same with each and every person she interacted with. She's simply one of those people who are magnificent! Even after I moved out of the apartment, I had a package that was shipped to The Bartlett. She saw my name and placed it to the side, knowing I would eventually come to look for it. When I walked in, she smiled and went to get my package. Breanna was the salvation of my time at the Bartlett. I would deliberately wait to take care of my front desk issues until I saw she was on duty. Every one else frustrated me, but Breanna always made my day better! And I miss seeing her now that I've moved. So, to be fair, post COVID lock downs, I have no idea what live is like at the Bartlett. If they give you the freedom to enjoy the building, then I suspect life could be amazing there. So I am writing this review the day after receiving an official letter from the apartment to either get rid of our dog or vacate. First of all, it's sad to think that society made us believe that anything can get done by hiring a lawyer, a form of bullying when you have power and money. With no real proof, witness, or even a legit reason to force someone to get rid of their dog. My dog is actually a puppy, still barks madly at children like most dogs do when sensing fear. One of the tenants (family of 4) who lives way on the opposite side of the building, has run into my dog (on a leash) maybe a handful of times over the past 9 months we've been living here. Parents should expect living in a building practically built for dogs, to have barking around, especially having a child who is obviously frightened by a dog. This kid will eventually run into other dogs who will bark, like I've seen others do. We haven't gotten any complains from anyone else! Not even our next door neighbors. We decided to vacate asap (Bartlett gave us just 1 month!). Mainly from the ridiculousness of this request, we could not stand to live in such a place. Families with dogs, beware of tenants who can easily force you out or rid of your pet because of a complaint for any reason. For all the above complaints on yelp, they are true, this apartment only appears to be a luxury apartment with some uppity people. The staff turnover rate is constantly growing, which says a lot about management as well as some tenants (males!) who have the audacity to talk down to a concierge that is a women trying to do her job. read more

The Bartlett is an amazing apartment building located in the middle of Pentagon City neighborhood of Arlington Va. If you're looking to move into the area this place is a must. Below is a list of why the Bartlett should be at the top of anyone's list. 1. Amazing staff. Selam, Fatou and the entire staff are very helpful, engaging and they go above and beyond to take care of the residents. 2. Amenities amenities amenities. Professional gym for all levels of fitness and styles. 4 squat racks, spinning room, yoga room. Private entrance to Whole Foods, amazing garage, meeting and work rooms, whatever your hears desire it's here or within walking distance. Imagine walking to the Metro and 2 stops loafer you're at DCA...... 3. 5 min walk to everything you need. Metro, Nordstrom's, Costco, Banks, dozens and dozens of places to eat. You won't need to drive much living here 4. View - best view in Virginia from the roof. 360 degree views of DC. You can see most of the monuments from the roof, see planes take off, land, stunning sunsets, sunrises. Pics on the website pales in comparison once you see for yourself 5. The residents are diverse, mature and fantastic. Never heard any wild parties, loud noise, or loud music. 6. Great place for dogs. Saw so many beautiful dogs here. 2 nearby parks to go walk your dog. You really must experience this place for yourself. I've never been at a place/neighborhood where it was so exciting to be a part of. You will not be disappointed by the living arrangements here. You see and experience the magnificence and might of this country living here. Best view of the Pentagon and once in a while you can see military helicopters fly in from the roof. Really cool stuff. So, I saved this review for after my move out b/c I was concerned of retaliation by the management company. I felt living here was "ok," but definitely not up to luxury or high-end standards. I have lived at a few high-end buildings now, and this place disappointed a lot. Seems like amateur hour, or too much trial-and-error taking place. Lived here a year, and promptly left at the end of the lease. I would not recommend to my friends or colleagues. Here's my take on it. Pros: -Friendly leasing agents; fast application process -Modern interiors -Decent community events (free drinks, food, fun) -Good concierge package tracking (Michael & Fatou) -Gym is an above average apt gym (although not cleaned often) -Responsive maintenance (always within 24 hrs) -Whole Foods is super convenient Cons-- -Ventilation: -constantly smell the rooftop or other people's cooking (more annoying than anything else) -Housekeeping: -inadequate weekend coverage; -often no toilet paper or soap in any communal areas; -dog urine left for hours, sometimes days, at a time (pic to prove it); -cleaning staff does not change/remove gloves when handling dog waste from dog park -Workbar: -slow, usually inadequate internet speed (can't video conference or reliably stream for work)- they offer WiFi, not high speed connection as indicated by Samatha Woolley. They reference airports and train stations' public internet as their comparison group (which, btw, is actually faster these days and poor reference standard), despite the internet being a residential amenity we pay for, not a "public use" feature; -printer is often broken, out of ink, or out of paper. Concierge won't do anything about it even though Costco is across the street. -Sounds: -apartments are loud. Constantly hear people in other apartments or going down halls -Fees: -the monthly "service charges" feel more like this monthly enigma of an extra $100-200 a month. Still can't figure them out...glad to be done with them; -power was not billed correctly for the first half of the lease and they required upfront payment of the full, corrected amount right after it was discovered. Corporate housing/"check-ins": -management says they don't do corporate housing anymore (they did when I moved in), but you only have to stand at the concierge desk a couple of minutes to find people "checking in" with xyz company. They don't treat the building or amenities with respect, so it hurts the living environment. For example, our unit had water pouring from the ceiling b/c the corporate resident above decided to take a bath and deliberately let it overflow with their kid... Theft: -left my $300 headphones in the conference room overnight (was working late and absentmindedly forget to pack them). Went the next morning and they were gone. Contacted mgmt and they suggested I post to the online community board to find them. Yes, it was def stupid mistake on my part, but definitely not what I would expect from a secure/luxury community. read more

UPDATE The East Lobby monitors were fixed within a day of my Yelp review; oddly enough apparently my concerns & single star Yelp rating did not qualify for one of those warm and fuzzy replies from management like all my other fellow Yelpers. Beltway Janitorial is still massively UNDESERVING the community. Last week (March 2018) my 10th floor hall was littered with trash including a doggie diaper (super annoying). The latest outrage is over the package receiving process; "Management" created a policy of refusing packages delivered if NOT addressed to one of the named tenants (my sister lives in Paris and routinely has her US purchases shipped to me (more economical) for me to ship to her). I find this particularly unreasonable as the packages are addressed to the apartment number which they are clearly intended for; It's my right to accept or reject. This is 2018, the age of Amazon & like MOST my insanely busy life requires lots of web-based shopping, not to mention my grown (out-of-state) children web-shop & yes from time to time packages are shipped home for safe-keeping, or so they thought. This arbitrary & clearly petty policy is for no other reason than for the parent company, JBG Smith to continue to cut corners by limiting staffing. I'm just petty enough to take this nonsense up with my Attorney. There is a very simple solution, staff a mail-room attended during peak package delivery hours to provide the luxury service the top-market rental rate suggest. In the meantime, I will make sure packages are address C/O "me" per Managements reprimand - I love paying to be reprimanded like a child. As a side note my distain is limited to the on-site "management" Staff. The concierge staff (e.g. Fatima, Mike and the Maintenance Supervisor who fills in from time to time) are all very professional and always overly accommodating; a stark difference to my experience with the PMO Staff such as Amira. I am clear that my expectations are well within reason; at the tune of $4,200/monthly I expect nothing short of a luxury living experience where no ask is too much. Moreover, the tenant unequivocally deserves nothing less than the respect of not being over talked, demeaned or dismissed. The gas range and stone counters are NOT enough to keep me here while we build a house to accommodate a wheelchair. UNBELIEVABLY underwhelming property management services. Very disappointing as I love the brick and mortar building itself, and the location is LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION. I fully EXPECTED a full luxury-property concierge service environment considering the rental rate; however, the service is subpar at best. I know as a Contracting and facilities management professional The Bartlett Management Team is cutting corners to save cost which adversely effects service standard levels for the Bartlett to turn oversized profits. Be clear! by any other name this is nothing more that SLUMLORD tactics in a luxury property environment. Active complaints - Transit/Commute monitors in the East Lobby have been off-line for well over a month without a single notice to residents of an intent to resolve. The new Janitorial contractor cuts more corners than their customer the Bartlett. Entryways are forever filthy, glass doors are NEVER clean and floors are never mopped or vacuumed consistently, let alone daily. I personally remind Concierge weekly to have the 10th floor vacuumed, not to mention they are DESTROYING the terrazzo marble floors buy using non-manufacture recommended cleaning techniques and products. The maintenance program is nothing short of a bandage approach as opposed to a preventative maintenance program. With 700+ units bring in market rents of no less than $1,800 to as much as $4,500+ (my 3-bed is $4,200) it is simple for even a finance novice to calculate the pretty steep profit margin. What EXACTLY is the point of paying for an "exclusive luxury" experience when it's nothing more than #Basic? I'm resolving to telling myself I'm paying for "LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION"... read more

On the plus side, the location is convenient and the apartments themselves are great. They are laid out very well, and I enjoyed the appliances. Unfortunately the attention to detail from staff in the rental office is lacking, which often caused problems: -Had to ask staff multiple times to review/proofread their lease agreement. It was missing pages, among other issues. -On move in day I was forced to sign a new lease in order to get access to the apartment due to an issue with the name on the document. This occurred while a moving van was waiting--it should have been dealt with ahead of time. -Personal information regarding a different tenant was sent to me by email. This causes concerns whether my own personal information is being safeguarded properly. -Despite there being no issues regarding the condition of the unit, the security deposit was not returned in full. There was no account statement provided, and no interest payment included as required by our lease agreement. -Did not respond to any of my notices about the security deposit issue, leaving legal action as only recourse. -On a separate note, I agree with the other comments here that the construction noise/traffic etc. has been a major inconvenience. **Quick follow up to the response from the management company: Please note that this review was written for the benefit of other potential customers. As indicated I have already made multiple attempts to resolve the issue, including a letter sent by certified mail and received no response. Perhaps responding to emails, letters, calls, etc. from current/former tenants rather than communicating through this forum would be the more professional approach. read more

The Bartlett is a great place to live. It's conveniently located next to everything anyone would need living in this area...and for me, that includes my work. My entire experience here has been absolutely wonderful...and that's because of the management team and their staff. I cannot say enough about Jamal's and Julia's timeliness and consistent efforts in assisting me through the process. The management team is very thorough, helpful, and very friendly. They really do make you feel like they've known you for a long time! The front desk staff follows suit. Always so helpful. Breanna is always professional and so very attentive. She listens well and devotes the time required to remedy any issue I have. Subsequent to my first visit to the front desk, she remembered my name. Some may count that as a small thing, but this place has hundreds of tenants and I just recently moved into my apartment. It's nice to have the front desk greet you by name, especially as a new tenant. It adds to the community atmosphere here at the Bartlett. I definitely would recommend this place to others. read more

Pros: 1) New Building 2) Whole Foods downstairs 3) Friendly residents 4) Can't hear the neighbors ever 5) Great shopping/food in neighborhood, very walkable in general. 6) Resident events offered 7) Amenities, especially gym and rooftop areas are nice. Cons: 1) Parking entrance/gate system is a joke 2) Some concierge could care less about being people customer oriented. 3) Windows seem very average for being new and double pane. Hear Street and construction noises easily. 4) Elevators are either super fast or a legit 3-5 minute wait, which is insane for having eight elevators total 5) The paint/wall is a super weird texture and basically anything causes slight "damage". I'm sure my deposit will be gone due to that. 6) Construction by the metro has closed the main sidewalk down, not the building's fault at all, but still a negative for the residents. I'll be moving out at end of my lease, nonetheless. For not being a DC building, the property is not worth the cost for me anymore, given the cons listed. read more

Update: Packages are still a mess. It's often over 12 hours before we get a notification of a delivery. We had a package delivered yesterday and today the front desk told me that they didn't know where it was and that I should check next door with The Acadia (shocker, they don't have it). The front desk person was unbelievably lazy and didn't offer to help and suggested I call UPS. I asked to go back and look in the package room, got a very snotty "knock yourself out," and I found it within 30 seconds. Zero apologies or cares from her end. Service is TERRIBLE. Original Review: This is definitely a luxury apartment building. The units and overall building are beautiful and they certainly do a good job at planning events. However, I will agree with other comments that for the price we pay, the experience is disappointing. 1) When we moved in, our smoke/carbon monoxide detector kept going off as soon as we turned the oven to broil (even before putting food in). After a couple times of this happening we put in a service request and found out we had a carbon monoxide leak. My husband had been slow roasting ribs in the oven for four hours the day before we found this out. I emailed three people on the staff from the portal to let them know about the problem as they were still finishing up other units and received zero response. When I finally told someone in person, the response was "oh ok, thanks for letting us know." I felt like they couldn't care less. Great foot to start off on. 2) There have been several times that we know a package has arrived but won't get an email till the following day. We also once had frozen food delivered (in a box with PERISHABLE printed all over it) and four hours later hadn't received an email. We checked at the desk and they couldn't find it because it wasn't on our shelf and was "too large to go in the fridge." The food was almost completely defrosted. They had no excuse for not scanning it in except for that it was too big to fit in the fridge. 3) Elevators are TERRIBLE. End of story. 4) Our "secure garage" has been open on and off over the past month due to technical difficulties over. 5)The gym is amazing as far as apartment gyms go. However, people don't seem to care to put their weights away. About 50% of the time that I go into the gym, weights are left on the barbells or equipment is left on the floor. It drives me absolutely nuts. You're at the gym - don't be lazy; put your stuff away. 6) Our larger dog has torn one of her nails twice on the grates that are at the front and back entrance. The space in the grates is the perfect size to catch her nail and she is still terrified to walk over them (we have lived here about 8 months). The last time it tore, the vet had to clip her nail up to her paw and bandage it for a few days. We emailed the building and the response back was that "maybe her nails are too long." Also, no one else had complained so they wouldn't be doing anything about it (that part I kind of understand). I've talked to other dog owners and have heard similar stories though. read more
