Two smiling faces greeted us at the door. They offered a high top but my hip was absolutely not digging it nor a table up the flight of steep stairs. Once seated, we were greeted promptly and had water in front of us almost immediately. We each ordered soup and then a sandwich to share. I had the Sopa de Pollo . A hot bowl thick with thin noodles and lots of chunks of chicken. The chunks were too big to eat without being cut up which was a challenge in a bowl of broth. It was so hot that I had to wait a while to try it and even then had to blow on it. It was delicious. Unless the soup is your meal, order a cup. I still took nearly a pint of soup back with me. My husband ordered the Frijole Negro - a huge bowl of black beans that was served with a large pile of raw onions on top. Like the chicken soup, it was burn your mouth hot and a very large serving. He said it was good but he'd not order it again. Moving on to the sandwich. We had the Cubano. I'm not even going to describe it - just trust me - order the Cubano. Do not look at the rest of the menu - order the Cubano. Don't even bother looking at the ingredients, just order the Cubano. Have you ordered it yet? Do it already. The Cubano is huge. We split one half and had the other when we arrived at our next stop. Do consider that we had soup first; otherwise, we'd have eaten the whole thing. The accompanying plantain chips were worthy of their own review. They were wonderful. Who knows if and when we'll be back to Louisville but when we are, La Bodeguita will be the first place we stop. Less than 30 seconds later, we saw a sign for this place that included the word "speakeasy." Sold. On a hunch/whim, we wandered inside and the rest is history. What a cool place. I'm not a smoker though every five years or so I might accept a stogie from someone and try to recreate Arnold scenes from Predator, so I can't speak to the cigar aspect of Louisville Cigar, which is a pretty considerable chunk of the business model. I will say that walking through the restored historic former residence (an homage in and of itself to some really great architecture in the city overall) was a vibe - we could just tell immediately this was a legitimately cool, memorable place and I was already having regrets over not being aware of this establishment and officially factoring it into our itinerary. From perusing a few news articles after the fact, I know we were greeted by the owner Josh immediately upon entry, who led us to the speakeasy in the back and also showed up several times to talk to the barkeep throughout our stay. We were definitely getting toward the end of the night; there were two or three other people in the bar area but they left pretty soon after we settled in. I think there's an outdoor area probably catering almost exclusively to the cigar customers, both because of references thrown into conversation and from the owner coming back to get orders for them. Felt a little FOMO, but not much given our situation. It's not an exaggeration to say that Aaron, the resident bartender/mixologist, is one of the best I've encountered. This man was born to be behind a classy bar pouring bourbon. I can still picture him twirling a giant ice cube with tongs, while it continues to spin in the glass as he pours bourbon. A memorable visual. He's also a quirky soul (probably an offshoot of my tribe), the kind of person who was teased/misunderstood in childhood but likely got the last laugh in the end. Truly interesting person. But the key was the booze, as it often is in a speakeasy. We asked a lot of questions about bourbon and what's working or not working in our homemade versions of Old Fashioneds (as I suspected, my chum was probably not being QUITE as aggressive as she should be with the bitters), and got a solid rec for a new bourbon in Peerless. He used it to make $30 Old Fashioneds (I know, I know), which honestly were worth the money. We'd already had two drinks at Jack Fry's so we didn't order more than one here, but given what I know now about the mediocrity of their Old Fashioneds, I wish we'd stuck with water there and come over here with clear palates and hearts. Oh well. I've told many people since we came back from Louisville that I don't have a ton to recommend beyond bourbon-centric activities. That's true, and Louisville Cigar would certainly fall within those parameters. This is the only nice neighborhood we visited for my money, and this was its biggest selling point. Stop by the distilleries for sure, but you're doing yourself a disservice if you don't figure out a way to squeeze this place in too.
