Today when the Red route took us to old town and I saw The White Hart Inn I said to Jan let's do an early dinner there and she agreed. We continued the route and stayed on back to the stop in old town. We love Alfresco dining but it was too cold and windy today. We went inside and the restrauant was packed. It's open seating. No hostess, no sign in. We were lucky and just happened to be standing next to a table that opened. We had been there about 5 minutes. The restaurant/ pub is rich in history, established in 1516. It's small with limited bar seating and prehaps 8 to 10 tables. It is noisy from conversation, tosting and music, but we didn't have a hard time communicating. It has a great vibe. It's a fun venue and popular with the locals. The menu is not large and has several Scottish offerings. To start, Jan was cold and wanted an Irish coffee. I ordered an Innis and Gunn larger. Innis & Gunn is an acclaimed Scottish brewery founded in 2003 in Edinburgh. It had a slightly citrus flavor. Jan ordered muscles and I ordered the steak and ale pie, served with a charred Hispi cabbage wedge, buttered mash and Merlot beef dripping gravy. It was very tasty, very robust flavor. I loved the cabbage; great flavor. I had to look up hispi cabbage and it is a variety of green cabbage. The muscles were good and the broth very nice. We had a lovely time and a good meal. Our good luck at freelancing dining venues while we explore Ireland and Scotland continues.

The setting still looked ancient and the overall ambiance was befitting. Small place though. The food and drinks however disappointed. They could have put more efforts to turn the place into something much more than it is. Service was efficient without being really excellent.

I'd live here if I could. The full vegan breakfast is everything, literally. Every single bite is delicious, and I'm impressed that even the beans taste homemade, perfectly cooked and not at all mushy. Easily the best meal I've had in town so far! My omnivorous dining companions were just as pleased with their selections as well. The pancakes looked super fluffy and beautifully presented, stacked high with all sorts of fresh and candied fruits. Even the scones are something special, glossy on the top and packed full of plump sultanas. We made reservations but it doesn't seem necessary if you go for breakfast. It was pretty quiet and easy to get a prime table right away.

I ordered I fruit scone to go with it and it was probably the best scone I've ever had- and topped with clotted cream. I highly recommend this relaxing atmosphere for a meal. We had trumpet, sax, organ, guitar bass and drums as well as a vocalist. We did a lot of Chicago songs as well as Blood, Sweat & Tears, Blodwin Pig, The Faces, Neil Young and the Ides of march. Fond memories and so happy to see this place rise once again from the ashes. I've visted several times for a coffee and often have one of their large Pain au raisins........much larger than any others in Edinburgh ! The staff are all very pleasant and I really love the laid back atmospphere in this new and much improved building. The builders did a really splendid job of the renovation. I'm really glad that the other reviewers have given Teviot such high ratings and I just want to lend my support. I've heard many people complaining in the past and wanted to counter some of those opinions. Teviot first and foremost houses the student Library Bar- a nice bar with a library theme. Obviously there are cheap drinks and deals to be expected. My only complaint is the food. Take the burgers. The quality is fine, I mean their pretty dry and plain. But they seem a little expensive for what you get, given that its a student union. Also the number of times I have ordered a veggie burger only to be served a beef one is countless. I think the food is one of the main complaints I've heard from others, and I agree it could be improved. But this alone isn't enough to detract from the overall quality of the palce. Teviot also contains a club, several other bars (not always open) a Costa cafe, several sitting areas and rooms that can be hired by societies or used to hold meetings including a debating chamber. Overall Teviot just has a really nice feel that welcomes students. I've been in other student unions that have felt a bit cliquey or just run down. Teviot offers something for most students. And I have to say I love the 16th century Scottish based architecture.
