It's got seats right by the beach so you can enjoy your food and drinks with a great view and zero sand in your mouth. It's got a totally amazing selection of food and drinks available and it's not expensive for the quality you get which is always a bonus in my books! They sell everything from porridge and crepes to filled rolls and various delicious baked goods, all of which are made daily and busting with flavour. I think the most expensive thing on the menu costs £4 so you can order all the things and not feel bad about it! The staff here are crazy friendly, they play great music (Smashing Pumpkins are a great to listen to by the ocean!). There's pretty much no complaints to have with a place like this!

Service very slow as they process orders as they come in, so if you order a coffee and there are 6 big orders ahead of you, rather than serve the quick coffee you have to wait your turn. For a small place menu is too big, they would do better to offer fewer things and do them better. Would be less stressful for the kitchen and the staff. Very sad to see Tides close. Only thing is its favour is location now.

Also the roll was not fresh and they'd tried toasting it to make it better. It just crumbled too. Very disappointing. Lashings of red sauce did nothing to improve the texture or flavour. Michelle opted for a fruit scone. It looked nice but wasn't fresh either. In fact, she said it was soo hard that i she "sconed" me with it, she'd need to take me to A&E. We did tell the chap who served us, in order to give him an opportunity to rectify matters but he just shrugged it off and presented us with the bill. The only redeeming feature was the pot of tea. It was lovely. But it's hard to ruin a pot of tea so I'm not sure how much that goes in his favour. I'd give it another try on another occassion. I'm not ready to write this place off yet. I'm hoping it was just an off day and the food/service will be better on a future visit. It's got a great location with a fab view of the beach/sea so I hope it does improve.

We ordered an iced latte, a black coffee, an espresso walnut brownie, and the chai cardamom bun. The staff was nice and gave us a few recommendations, which were super helpful since it was our first time there. The café itself is pretty small, with limited indoor seating and a few tables outside. There was an organized queue to get in and order, but it moved pretty quickly, so the wait wasn't bad at all. Everything was good, but I can't say it was the best coffee or pastries I've ever had. Maybe my expectations were just too high because of all the hype, but I was definitely expecting a little more.

Because I will never - EVER - find a fish supper superior, or perhaps even equal, to the one I had this weekend from the Golden Bite. I travelled to Portobello with Moray L on the express mission of trying the legendary Bite Of Gold after reading Justin G's review, and we were the first ones in when the doors opened at 16:45. The man who greeted us over the counter could not have been happier if he had been a dog in a field full of squirrels. It doesn't seem an exaggeration to say that I suspect frying fish has been his lifelong passion. Because we were so early, we got the first haddock to go into the fryer - clean, white haddock of gobsmacking, Jonah-swallowing proportions which the chap wobbled at us playfully before setting about the battering and frying. At this point - minutes after the doors opened - the shop filled. I mean it properly filled. I know not how many of these were pilgrims like us, and how many were locals, but it's clear that the reputation of The Golden Bite's fish suppers is widely renowned. I was reaching five stars simply from the cleanliness, the rich frying smell, and the chap's jollity before I'd even put anything in my mouth, and when a small girl entered and he pulled down a teddy bear to wave at her, I was smitten with the place entirely. But the food. The food. The proof of the poisson is in the eating. Oh. My. Wrapped lovingly in paper and carried down reverently to the seafront for consumption, these piscine Midas fillets were battered to crispy perfection, but still with the softer underside that makes a fish supper truly sensational. The chips - proper chip shop chips - were glorious and plentiful, but not so numerous as to prevent one from finishing the lustrous, luscious fishywishy that so enchanted both me and Moray. I need to go back. No, you don't understand. I NEED to go back. Now. And I don't think I will ever love a fish supper in quite the same way that I love the Golden Bite's.

A great chip shop that can be found in the Main Street in Portobello…read more Run by Italian husband and wife team serving freshly prepared pizzas, jacket potatoes, I even spotted a battered ribeye steak in the hot display cabinet as well as the famous fish and chips that are cooked to order, for me that is a really good sign of a well run chip shop where the food is fresh and not sitting in a hot box for ages. Crispy batter and cooked just right. I did notice that a plastic sheet A5 size was placed on top of the fish to stop it from sticking to the paper what a great idea, this shop is a must for anyone passing by
