The walkways are dark, the shelves pile to the ceiling with wares and cabinets display custom made specialty hats, and the whole place has a somewhat magical feel to it. Yes, you have to like hates but if you do there's a vague sense of a wonderland with different surprises found in the corners and if you're only interested in hats, which are no longer as fashionable as they once were, this is a place to further explore your interest. They not only sell hats but also make them so if you see something you like but they don't have your size, they can probably make it for you. His main market seems to be historical re-enactors, but he also makes fashionable hate like fedoras and Derbys and is more than willing to talk to you about design, look materials and the price for this customer made hat is on a par with well known brands like Mcgill and Stetson (I like hats) So why only 4 stars? Two things. 1 is convenience. the store is only open on Fridays and weekends, great for tourist trade on the weekends but otherwise difficult. I'd been visiting Gettysburg for years before I happened to be there on a day they were open. the other is a little more twitchy but it was reliability. I did have a hat made and when I got it, it was perfect. :) BUT it was weeks later than I was told at the time. I wasn't informed there would be a delay, I just let a few weeks pass over the estimate i was given and then reached. Then they told me they were a little backed up. It would have helped me had they reached out to me, rather than me having to sit and wonder.

5/26/21 This store…read moreis one of the few Native American/Inca Arts I have come across. I found it interesting to see what kind of art works were sold.     There were some nice shirts and clothing, but I was more interested in the jewelry that is made.  I saw some flat beaded bracelets for $15 dollars and some big flat beaded bracelets for $20.   There were two items I liked, but one of them turned out to be a design of a wolf, and not a fox. If the bead design had been a fox, I would have bought it.   As things turned out, I bought the twenty dollar eagle design bracelet.  The bracelet will not stay on my wrist if it isn't tight enough. The women there were happy to have business in their store, because they looked bored when I saw them earlier.    I can't be sure what type of language they were speaking, but my wife thought it could be Bolivian.   There are no refunds on any of the merchandise you buy, but you can do an exchange.  I might exchange my bracelet for the smaller purple bracelet I saw in the store.    I have some time to think about it. Still, the ladies I saw there were very polite and helpful.  We look forward to coming back here.

Bottom Line: Large clothing store with nice displays and quality brands…read more Chesapeake Bay Outfitters is a rather large clothing store that offers casual attire for men and women including shoes. They also carry some home décor items. For the most part I eyed up women's clothing and shoes from brands that I often see at Nordstrom like Nic + Zoe, Uggs, Sofft and Olukai. They also had a lot of cashmere sweaters so I spent a fair amount of time perusing the variety. My husband and I also checked out shirts from Chesapeake Bay Outfitters' own line, Rising Tide, which had a terrific feel to them. The store was organized and had great displays. I'm sorry that the reviews for this lovely store aren't better. We didn't have any awful customer service experiences but I will say no one greeted us or acknowledged us which is never good in a retail situation. In most other shops in Saint Michaels the staff were welcoming, friendly and chatty.

I also liked that she asked if she could touch the clothing while I was wearing it (underneath my arms) to show how it could be sewn. I really "lucked out" with the 50% off sale today. Ugg flip flops were even 1/2 off. Unfortunately, most of the shoes I really like were full price. Oh and their pashmina dress toppers. Dreamy....
