The Berkeley Review is an AMAZING MCAT test prep class and I would take it again in a heartbeat (but I do not think I will need to after this class)! First off, some background on myself: I went to a top-tier university, but without a strong foundation in science, I did poorly in my premed prerequisites. I especially struggled in chemistry and biology. This course really gave me the confidence that I needed to take my MCAT and feel like I can actually get into medical school. I am the type of person that needs structure in my study schedule and this was the perfect way to keep myself on top of studying. Todd is a GREAT teacher and made learning about physics and chemistry so much easier than it was in my undergraduate classes. Cecile also taught organic chemistry topics in ways that made so much more sense. Other great teachers included Tarek (who focused on biochemistry) and Alex (who taught CARS lectures). What makes The Berekely Review (TBR) so much more than just an MCAT prep course, is the fact that the teachers are more than willing to talk about their experiences applying to medical school and what they did or what they would not do. Todd is also very knowledgeable in medical school apps and gave amazing advice. TBR felt like family - I met two other students and bonded with them immediately. This helps tremendously when you are struggling through hard concepts and practice exams. Lastly, I was very impressed by TBR's genuine care for its students - always emphasizing that they can spend extra time teaching concepts that we felt needed more review. Todd always welcomed feedback on class structure and showed how much TBR aims to make this a better class for everyone. I am so grateful to the Berkeley review and all the great instructors that teach it. You have no idea the difference you made in my daughter's life those months of class; she has always struggled with science in college and she said the way you teach made a difference and she wished her professors would have taught the class as you do. I am most grateful to Todd for being one of a kind, down to earth, and humble human being who has so much experience as a professor. Not only is he such a great teacher, but he also has so much knowledge about medical school, applications and much more and shared with the students. My daughter would drive sometimes up to two hours to attend class and would come home happy and excited every time because of having received so much knowledge from everyone who shared their experiences. I took the Berkeley Review the first time I prepared for the MCAT. My experience wasn't great but I ended up retaking and moving on to medical school. I had long since forgotten about the experience until I had lunch with my cousin and her roommate who had just taken Berkeley. Her experience was really similar so I thought I'd offer this review to help some people avoid the mistakes that I made preparing for the MCAT. First, when I took the course, Todd was the main instructor. He wrote some of the books as well. Everyone has different tastes but Todd did not fit mine. His lectures were thorough but boring. Some of his comments made my friends and I a bit uncomfortable. Kinda of inappropriate for a 50+? year-old man to be mentioning to 20 something girls. That aside, I thought I was learning a LOT of information that would help me. I would spend hours going through the BR practice books. I started to dread opening them but thought it was like medicine, something you know you don't like but need. I knew people who had done well on the MCAT and thought of myself as just as good a student, maybe better. So if they could I'd it, so could I. I do not know how they studied for the test, but I figured with my light courseload and BR (the person I knew the best who had done really well actually took a different course), I would be even better prepared. Berkeley talked about how they would teach you everything you needed to know including the test taking. But the test taking never came. I asked Todd about it once and he blew me off by talking about a physics question for 15min. Again, I thought that as long as I had really good coverage of the material, I would be good. That is basically what BR pushed even though they preached about understanding the MCAT. They also ran things as cheaply as possible. Normally, I would not care, but it started creating resentment among some of their instructors. One instructor would always make side comments about Todd after class. I was not feeling great about the class and the last thing I needed to hear was an instructor from BR criticizing BR even more. In the end, the real MCAT was nothing like what BR prepared me for. In some ways it was "easier" and in some ways "harder." I felt that I had spent hours and hours of my life learning useless information and missing some content (of all things) that was vital. I never complained to Todd about it. I should have, but I felt he would brush aside my comments as he did times before. I told my chem instructor and she privately told me to try something else. Needless to say, the results I got from working with BR were not to my satisfaction- they were pretty bad. I was down for a while. At first I thought it was mostly me, but a friend of mine who had done fine on the MCAT pointed out that maybe I was studying inefficiently. He and I were both Neurosci at SC at the time. But he had actually studied on his own! Long story short, I ended up studying on my own as well. My score improved dramatically with MUCH less effort. Everyone has their own learning style. But I think that if you want to do well on the MCAT (and have no interest in wasting your time learning useless facts), BR is not the place for you. You learning almost nothing about the test and get bombarded with a lot of extraneous material. Some people thrive on that. I thought I would given my background. But I was wrong. I burnt me out. SIMPLY THE BEST!!! I can't believe anyone who took the class would give it less than 5 stars honestly. Let's face it, studying for the MCAT is beyond stressful for all of us, but I still looked forward to class every day. I took the class this past summer at UCLA and could not have been happier with the course or my score. The teachers are fantastic. It all starts with Todd who, not only teaches, but wrote all the chemistry and physics books. It was really easy getting concepts down with his unique anecdotes and awesome mnemonics. I never really understood E and M when I took it in school, but he made it so simple. His trick for lenses and mirrors seriously makes any question you get a piece of cake, I wish he could have taught all of my college classes! Andy was amazing too. He had a way of making biochem seem easy and I appreciated all of his tips on how to handle the test day itself. The fact that he did more than just review and teach material really helped in being mentally ready. He was very approachable and pretty much always stays late for office hours any time we needed it, which was super helpful. I also wanted to shout out to Spencer, Mason, and Megan for making genetics, immuno, and lab experiments so clear. My test was full of things from their lectures and I remember thinking about their examples as I was working through some of the tough passages. I could not have been any better prepared for B/B. Cecile and Erin were super helpful in psychology and sociology. I wish their book had sociology in it, but the classes were able to fill that void. They said it would feel like a second CARS section, which ended up helping me a lot on test day. I think what I loved the best was that they genuinely cared about me and every student in our class. Every teacher knew each student's name by the end of the first class (and we're talking like 20 students or so!). I loved that they provided snacks every class and let us study there late at night if we needed it. There is no way I could have prepared on my own as well I did without their help. The biggest pro is the quality of the teaching and the support they give. The biggest negative is their CARS book which I stopped using after a while, but the class handouts for CARS were really good though. EXCELLENT TEST PREP! It's absolutely amazing! As always though, there will be pros and cons, but I feel the pros WAY outweigh the cons and make it the best MCAT test prep company. PROS: 1) Todd. By far, the GREATEST physics/chemistry tutor I have ever found. If you are worried about getting a better Physical Sciences course, HE IS YOUR MAN! It's unfortunate he can't teach the entire course. He has also written a lot of the Physics books and problems, so he KNOWS his stuff. 2) Small Business (relatively) I feel like small businesses always care more for you. Todd and most of his tutors are SO easy to get in touch with! They also have office hours and are willing to meet up with you for office hours as well. Over the course, we were feeling uncomfortable for the Biological section, so Todd had the Bio teacher from the Berkeley location spend almost 6 hours with us at no additional charge (it was originally 2 hours, but Dale was so nice that he stayed until we didn't have questions). And when we felt that one of hte tutors was sub-par, Todd re-did those classes for him so we would be prepared. 3) AMAZING MATERIAL This is in all caps for a reason. You will not find better material for the sciences and there is SO MUCH MATERIAL AVAILABLE! The bio can definitely be a bit too detailed, but the integration of topics and the unique, weird passages help prepare you for what will ultimately be the weird passages you get on the real MCAT. CONS: 1) Verbal Obviously, their weakest section. But from what I've heard from the various students who have taken two courses (i.e. Berkeley Review and Princeton, Berekeley Review and Swartwood, Berkeley Review and Kaplan), they all sort of suck. The usual advice for this is to get the EK 101 Passages or the Princeton Review workbook and just do passages in there. Their amazing sciences heavily outweight their sub-par verbal. 2) Their website and business aspect The business is run in a very old-fashioned way. I talked with Todd once and he agreed that the website is horrible and that they do need to update that business aspect. The application was a bit confusing and I never got confirmation I was enrolled until I got in. Again, small price to pay for such excellent service. That's all I can think of off the top of my head, but I heavily recommend despite the cons!! read more

Let me save you two grand and a ton of disappointment. MCAT prep is 90% personal effort. I thought taking a class at a test prep company would prepare me but I was wrong. As an adult applying to medical school, I had to hold myself accountable for my own studying because no test prep company can really help you when it comes to the MCAT. This is especially true of the Berkeley Review. Initially I didn't know anyone from the class. I met some people and started a study group. All five people in the group came to a consensus about the Berkeley Review: 1) It calls itself a test prep company, but really it teaches no test prepping skills. It teaches content that (may) show up on the test. HOWEVER it goes into Far Far too much detail about those topics. The MCAT is more about dealing with new info given to you on each passage than memorizing some random fact. 2) Todd is so mean during office hours and gets annoyed with you if you don't agree with him. For a man in his 50s, he is incredibly immature and tells a lot of inappropriate jokes. He spends 25% of each lecture in random tangents that don't relate to anything that'll ever be useful to you. 3) Except for the owner of the centre, Todd Bennet, and his wife, Cecil, every teacher is either a grad school student (only one M.D. student) or someone who only has a BS in science. More than half of the teachers were old TBR students who did well on the MCAT. Just bc they did well on the test, doesn't mean they're good at teaching the test. Afterall, they only took the test (at most) twice. It's understandable to hire students bc they're a lot cheaper than hiring a professional. The center is managed as cheaply as possible. 4) The student teachers are nice and really try their best. Tammy is great. Spencer knows a lot. However, they need some sort of guidance and formal training from someone who actually knows a lot about the MCAT. When you apply to med school, it won't matter how nice your MCAT teacher was. It'll matter what your score is. TBR at westwood does not prepare you well. Get together a group of friends. Buy books and tests from exam krackers, Princeton review, and Kaplan. Make a schedule and hold yourself accountable for it. Good luck! read more

The Berkeley Review is an awesome MCAT prep course. A few friends back during undergrad took TBR in Berkeley (yeah, they drove the 1.5 hour commute from Davis all the way to Berkeley) and were completely happy with the class. At that time (back in 2009), I was taking a prep course from another company and was pretty dissatisfied with the quality of the instructor and the whole format of the course. But I stuck it out anyway because I figured it was just as good, and it was more convenient for me to not commute that far. Well, I should have just dropped the other course and signed up with TBR, but that's another story... Anyway, when I moved down to LA for grad school, I decided to take another prep course to help me study for the MCAT. I researched and found out that TBR had a site in Westwood. I immediately signed up for it, knowing I'd have to fight through the horrendous LA traffic to get to my class. But after hearing all the success stories from past TBR students, I figured it'd be worth it. IT IS TOTALLY WORTH IT! Todd is an awesome instructor. He's very animated, intelligent, and humorous. I always appreciate instructors and professors like that because they help keep me engaged during the class. Also, TBR offers snacks and beverages to the students free of charge. That's a huge plus and a great pick me up after sitting through hours of my other classes earlier during the day. The environment is friendlier and not as cut throat as my other course. The students enrolled are actually nice and helpful. That's totally the opposite of what you'd expect from pre-meds and I love it! Also, Todd has other instructors involved and they're all great. They're a mix of current undergrads who have taken the course and the MCAT; people who are currently applying (and have gotten accepted) to medical schools; people who are current medical school students; and a working physician. That's a pretty good mix and they all have their own unique input and advice for all of us. Now on to the material. There are subject books given out (1 writing, 1 verbal, 2 general chemistry, 2 physics, 2 organic chemistry, and 2 biology). They're all written relatively well, but I will admit that the biology books could use some work. Organic chemistry and physics are pretty awesome, and the other books fall around average in terms of how the material is presented. I know I shouldn't divulge more information. I don't want to get in trouble for leaking out all the TBR secrets and course lay out. But I will say this, I am totally happy with how my course is going. I feel like I'm absorbing the material better and that I am performing better on practice passages and MCATs when compared to my other review course. If you have the time and money to shell out for a prep course, I definitely would recommend TBR. read more

The Berkeley Review is ok/fair for MCAT prep. I don't want to say anything negative about the Patricia's review, but I wanted to give a realistic review of TBR to help other studying for the MCAT. Everyone's opinion is different, so here's another to consider. My roommate and I signed up for the Berkeley Review this past year. She had heard that it had a lot of material and that the idea was to prep harder than the actual MCAT. After all, over studying never hurts, right? WRONG! We both came in expecting to lose anything close to a social life until the MCAT was done. Most of our classes were taught by Todd, one of the founders of TBR. We had different opinions of him. I thought he was ok, boring, but what do you expect from MCAT prep. Todd was knowledgable had written many of the books himself. My roommate found him annoying but did not complain too much in the beginning. We both starting having issues further into the course. I'm not that good at physics but my roommate is. She's one of those people who goes to office hours to ask physics that interests her outside of class :(!. She started noticing that some of the explanations for some of the problems from the books seemed off. I never noticed anything and said that every book has typos but she insisted on asking one of her professors at UCLA (we are both Bruins). The professors thumbed through the book and said that there seemed to be some conceptual mistakes with the explanations. I got a little paranoid and brought up the issue with one of the instructors- not Todd though since one of my friends said that he can get annoyed if he thinks you don't agree with him. The instructor actually made a snide remark about Todd which worried me even more. I started to panic but my roommate said that there were just a few mistakes and that the professor did not look that closely at the material. She just wanted to make sure she was right. Regardless, I ended up buying other books for a different perspective. Then, came the WORST part. Todd mentioned at one point that we would be learning about the test and how to deal with MCAT problems. That NEVER happened. The class promotes basically no real strategy. Advice for passages and verbal is non-existent. I took AAMC 3 on my own to see what the test was like. Then I got really frustrated. I felt that I had learned a lot of material that wasn't useful. The AAMC problems seemed easier but the passages required understanding how to work through them- something I NEVER got at TBR. I would over-think really simple problems and I would get stumped on passages because I did not know how to approach them. I started complaining to my roommate and to the same instructor- not Todd- that I had spoken to before. The instructor agreed saying that the Todd had no good comprehension of the MCAT but did know his science. I ended up studying on my own toward the end. My roommate, oddly enough, kept up with class until the very end. She did ok, mid 20's but ended up retaking. I did a bit better but retook as well. I studied ON MY OWN with different material the second time and did much better! From my experience, if you want material but boring classes that have tons of content (some of which is helpful, a lot of which is a waste of your time), then maybe TBR would be a good fit for you. I chose TBR based on all the "great things" I've heard and have read online. Just as Betsy said, save yourself $2k and a ton of disappointment. I expected this test prep course to be different from the others. I expected it to be for people who wanted some thorough content review, but to be completely honest, this test prep course is only for people who already have thorough knowledge in subject areas or who are just fresh from completing courses in MCAT subject areas. Let me summarize with a breakdown of each subject area: Good general chemistry review by Tammy. She actually had a structured way of teaching even though she was an undergrad. She gave well-paced, coherent lectures and answered questions after class and came in for office hours. Ochem/Biochem review didn't really exist. Todd's wife Cecil taught some Ochem based lectures, mostly on lab techniques and spectrometry, but there was one measly lecture on actual Ochem mechanisms (arrow pushing). Todd claimed that we would be able to understand Biochem concepts once we completed the course, but nope, that didn't happen. TBR made me so ill-prepared for the MCAT's multitude of experiment and data based questions involving tons of Biochem. Ok physics review from Todd. Sure his lectures were interesting, but he would go off tangent so much that when I would go back to review the audio from his lectures I was even more confused. He would literally spend half of his lectures going off topic. I survived off of the summary sheets we got from each lecture as well as the book for things I just couldn't understand from his lectures. He does have some good knowledge of the MCAT itself and physics concepts applications to medicine, but he never responds to emails which I found to be very annoying as he is head of the branch and part owner of this company. That's just poor business and work ethic. Bio review of physiology was pretty decent from Spencer who was an MD/PhD student.His lectures were dry, but he was to the point and very clear. He was the only teacher who actually responded to emails regarding questions and answered questions after lectures, making sure students understood everything. CARS (Critical Analysis and Reasoning). The book had tons of passages. There was no point of going to the lectures for this subject because all the tips and strategies were intuitive. The most disappointing part of this course was the Psychology, mind you there was NO Sociology review in the book and barely any in the lectures. Most Psych classes were taught by Veronica, Courtney, and Cecil, Todd's wife, who is an Ocehmist teaching Psych/soc (I don't know how she was qualified to teach this). Veronica, was a horrible lecturer who's belief was that students shouldn't write down ideas from lectures (not all students learn the way she expects them to). She would run through her Powerpoint lectures too quickly, so students wouldn't be able to take down notes .I was very upset about this, as this is my method for learning and understanding. Veronica even forgot to show up to a lecture and my entire class had to show up to another session, very unprofessional. Courtney on the other hand gave well-paced Powerpoint lectures and was coherent. Cecil was ok too, but I'm still wary of her qualifications to teach this subject matter. I had to retake the MCAT because I got a nightmare of a score on the Psych/Soc section. I retook it after using all the Khan Academy resources and managed to save myself. Overall, TBR is for those already well-versed in MCAT subject matters. If you're looking for a comprehensive review and need some Biochem/Sociology/Psych refreshing, then TBR is NOT for you. Also, if you're looking for some professionalism in teaching/correspondence, TBR is not the company. I'd honestly say just buy the books, but don't take the course. It definitely wasn't worth the $2k. read more

I came into this program with high expectations & was excited to see what Berkeley had in store for me. However, I cannot say that I particularly found the course helpful at all. This review is to give a subjective point of view on the course but I do want to touch on some of the teachers. Todd taught the Chem/Physics lectures and I will say he was a very knowledgeable teacher. I definitely see what people mean by when he goes off on tangents and I didn't particularly find them helpful. However, never did I ever perceive Todd as rude or offensive. I did appreciate him getting to know our names really early in the course and providing snacks, sturdy clean tables, and comfortable chairs. Nothing felt "cheap" as others have mentioned. Todd's lectures I felt were a little fast-paced, especially since I was struggling in Chem/Physics, so it was a bit hard to keep up with whatever he was saying. I also want to point out that majority of his lectures were based on the fact that you somewhat knew the basics of the subject. Unfortunately for me, I didn't do so great in my undergrad classes for Physics or Organic Chem so his Lectures on Electromagnetism and Carbonyl Reactions were particularly confusing. I don't think I've recalled much of anything from those lectures. The handouts provided were also quite dense with just a lot of copy-pasted info from the book that you had to purchase so I didn't quite see the need for such handouts. Todd did try to implement somewhat of his lectures into problem-based learning but a lot of the examples were very specific and wacky. I just kind of wished he introduced the topic from the bottom up. I don't even know what to say about office hours. They were somewhat sloppy because some days Todd would have to be setting up for his morning classes so there wasn't much time to ask questions (not to mention there were other students that had many questions so I really only got to ask maybe 1 or 2 questions max). Thus, I found myself having to teach myself the entire lesson back at home, making me wonder why I even showed up to class when I couldn't even follow the lectures. I want to also mention that a lot of the other teachers were had were not actual teachers, PhDs, doctors, etc. except for Cecile who is a professor at Pepperdine I think. Anyways, a lot of the teachers i.e Biochem, Psych were students at UCLA or recently graduated. I would know because I've taken classes or seen them around campus during my time at UCLA as well. So these are recent UNDERGRAD graduates and many of them don't have much teaching experience apart from maybe being a TA for a class or tutoring. HOWEVER, this is not a problem to me as long as they can clearly teach a topic. This is where I was also disappointed. Most of the times, it was just us copying down whatever they wrote on the board and they would read us facts . I was hoping that they would at least tell us what to focus on, or how these concepts are applied to MCAT passages, or even how to approach MCAT passages? Instead I got very dry lectures where I was pretty much sitting there, letting someone read off a book or sheets of paper (honestly, some teachers didn't even sound enthusiastic AT ALL). I stopped going to CARS lectures eventually because I didn't find much benefit sitting there for 2 hours. One very notable thing to mention is even though I paid for TWO hour lectures, a vast majority of the lectures that were not taught by Todd ended within 1-1.5 hours. AND we rarely went over the problems on the handouts in class. Sometimes we would go over 5-8 DISCRETE problems on concepts but that's it. So within the time I spent sitting in lecture, I pretty much only learned a handful of facts that I could've learned on my own had I sat at home and read the book, and I only got to practice maybe 5-10 discrete questions. NO PASSAGE BASED QUESTIONS. As an MCAT COURSE, I really thought we would go over how the test is structured. While I do understand that with such limited time but so many topics, there had to be some rushing and cutting out of certain things. But I felt extremely unprepared to take a Full Length exam after the course because the MCAT is more than just learning a few tips and tricks and content here and there. Only when I started studying on my own (and I bought Kaplan books because they were a much more condensed and quick read to review), did I finally realize how the MCAT was structure and how to answer passage based questions. Unfortunately, I realized this too late and with the course starting from Mid June to Early August, I didn't have time to really practice my skills with actual AAMC style practice questions. I'm going to retake. Sorry but I just can't recommend this course. I found myself making FAR better progress just reading the books, watching videos, and doing my own practice problems than sitting in lecture. I honestly wish I could rate the Berkeley Review higher. It was THE best experience I could have asked for (given that studying for the MCAT is hard). Berkeley Review gives you not only all of the material for the test but also gives you every trick to help you get through this test. I would not have been able to get through the test, or score so well without Todd and all of the amazing teachers. They pick the best teachers with the best teaching skills that have already been through the process, so they know everything you're going through and know how to help no matter what the issue is. Taking the MCAT is half learning the material, and half learning how to study smart and take the test in the most efficient and effective way. The Berkeley Review helps with both and they do an AMAZING job of it. They're a small company so they give you a lot of personal advice and it's a small community learning environment. Unlike other company's that half 300 people in their class, the Berkeley Review has less than 20 so you're always able to ask questions and get feedback. I honestly can't thank the Berkeley Review enough for how amazing they were and how much help they provided so that I could succeed! Hands down best Test Preparation I have had. The MCAT is hard and stressful and the Berkeley Review definitely prepared me for the test. I thought the materials were excellent and the instructors were great (take advantage of office hours!!!). I recommend taking the class with a friend to keep you honest and on top of all the practice passages! The only thing I wish I knew before I signed up was just how much work studying for the MCAT is, make sure to keep a good pace and not let yourself deteriorate by not working out or seeing the sun. read more

I took the course around 2005. I actually came online to see how Todd and TBR was doing as I reminisced about the course on my Hawaiian vacation. I've been an attending for about 4 years so this course was a while ago but I was just remembering how much Todd actually cared about the success of each student. Thinking back to my college days and struggling between work/study, research, volunteering, coursework, test prep, I remember how hard it was but Todd definitely stands out in my memory because he was so helpful and genuinely invested in the success of his students. He would stay late to help me figure things out until I finally got it. Seeing the negative reviews prompted me to post because I know Todd really cares, loves teaching and is very good at it. So to see that someone said he gets annoyed at his students, it's probably more of her perception than reality. His dedication to his students reflects my dedication to my patients.
