We took our e bikes here to get the brakes and tires replaced. The process was very easy at first. The lady that helped was extremely friendly. However, we went to pick up the bikes and one of them stopped working on our way home - it wouldn't accelerate. We called and explained the issue. They told us it'd be another $200 (after we'd already spent $1,000 on the tune up) to fix the issue. Our stance was that the bike worked perfectly fine until we dropped it off at the Bicycle Chain. They kept it for a few days and called us saying that it had been fixed. We tried to ride it home and it still wasn't working. We took it back and they told us we have a cheap e bike that'll end up in a land field - that there was nothing they could do. He said he'd tried to switch out the brake because the back brake was in bad shape - we JUST PAID THEM to replace all 4 brakes on both bikes. So, did they charge us for a brake that they never replaced?! The manager proceeded to call my bike cheap again and told me to call the distributor. Extremely inconsiderate. I called in just before dropping off my bike for minor work and they told me it would only take 45 minutes. It took 24 hours. When I called in the second day to ask when it would be ready, they told me how short staffed and overwhelmingly busy they are. But when I go in to pick it up the store is empty except for four employees-- three guys lounging around and one poor woman working her butt off in the back. I get if those guys aren't trained to fix bikes, but then train them. I lived in LA for years and the people living in tents on the streets fix bikes to get by. It's not some prestigious thing that these college kids need to pay their dues and work their way up to... just train them and watch your business succeed. read more

Let's start with the positives - Will is a wonderful young man and was exceptionally knowledgeable and helpful. The store had the car rack in stock that I was shopping for. Parking was accessible and plentiful. That's where the positives end. The manager, Howie, leaves a lot to be desired. He was described as a very polarizing individual and I couldn't agree more. He was condescending and insulting- questioning my ability to pay for the Saris Bones car rack that I requested by make and model; talked over me; refused to listen to my needs and instead told me that I, in fact, didn't need new pedals and that falling with my current cage pedals was essentially my fault. Yes. I realized that, which is why I wanted to purchase new pedals. The man literally refused to sell me new pedals. Instead, he felt it necessary to attempt to insult my intelligence and speak to me like a child. I came back to this store a second time, trying to give Howie the benefit of the doubt. But it's useless. I left and went to Back Alley Bikes where Jared LISTENED, put on the pedals for free and gave me some helpful tips. I have found my new bike shop. I went to the Bicycle Chain once. Once was enough. The entire staff seems to think that anyone who is not an avid sport cyclist is a moron, freak, degenerate, or all of the above. I have seldom seen such condescending rudeness from an entire staff. No, I do not know how that is supposed to be aligned. That's why I came here for your help. Don't look at me like that. I may not know much about the technical specifications of bicycles, but I do know when I'm being price gouged. These guys wanted to charge me more for a basic tune-up than the bike was worth in the first place. I managed to talk them down, but Jesus, let's have a little decency, shall we? Then, the kicker. The tune-up wasn't even properly done. After all that trouble, the bike breaks down in a week and a half from an improperly tightened chain. Which I had just paid them to take care of. What the hell, guys? There's a large selection of bikes here, though accessories are less well stocked. They have the repair shop there, and it seems to work with great speed (does fake-repairing something fast make it better service?). If you're a dedicated cyclist, maybe you can find something of value here. For my part, I'm going to try greener pastures. read more

There are a number of specialty products that have entire pocket communities surrounding them. In my admittedly limited experience I quickly learned that cycling was one of them. What's more important is that some factions of these communities are open and eager to teach you about that which they love so much, and others would prefer to cater exclusively to those who share their appreciation and wealth of knowledge. Unfortunately I've found the Bicycle Chain to fall into the latter category. What's more is they have a competitor down the street a half mile (Performance) that completely out does them in every department. The Bicycle Chain staff is knowledgeable, but every time I ask a question in there I feel like a moron. Their store is mostly actual bicycles, with a slim selection of accessories and apparel (a stark contrast to the more balanced Performance shop). I will say that the one time I left my bike with them their repair shop was speedy, alas my poor impression of their staff and business philosophy has tainted my opinion of them regardless. read more

I have come here since I moved to Chapel Hill in the early 2000s. I've always gotten great service and reasonable prices for everything. I most recently came in to fix a flat, and the staff went above and beyond in being helpful. They took the time to explain the problem and showed me how I could keep the bike running better in the future. The staffer also politely inquired about how often I oiled the bike chain, and since I'm a bike amateur, I had been doing it wrong (which was apparent from looking at the bike chain). The staffer took the time to show me the best way to do it in the future which was incredibly helpful. I'd definitely recommend this place. read more

I bought my first nice bike from this shop last month. I'm biking to work every day but am not at all knowledgeable about bikes. The staff was friendly and informative and hooked me up with a great bike. I've gone back three times for accessories or tune-ups and am consistently happy with their service. They never treat me like I'm feel dumb for not knowing pretty basic things, and they even talked me down from buying some expensive but unnecessary accessories, directing me to cheaper options that have worked well. I'm very happy with these guys and will continues bringing my business there as long as I'm in Chapel Hill. read more

The guys who work here are very helpful, and definitely willing to deal with you on the price of a new bike. I've been shopping around for a higher end road bike than the one that I have, and this is one of the places I looked that actually had a bike available that would fit me. They have been pretty patient and awesome while I take my sweet sweet time making my decision, and have shown lots of interest in their customers and helping out the random person who comes in from the street. We have purchased bikes from the Bicycle Chain for many, many years and have always been happy with their service. Today was another example of how responsive they are to their customers. I called to ask if i could stop by and have them put my bike seat back on as it had popped off while i was riding last week and I was not able to put it back on. They said to stop in and they would take a look at it. I went right over and they gave me a new bike seat and told me that it was still under warranty. I was out of there within in 10 minutes. However, when my neglected Schwinn needed work I took it there, they made some adjustments, replaced the chain and for $35 and 10 minutes I had a bike that actually worked. I did feel like an idiot, however It was entirely self imposed as I don't know much about bikes! Really friendly and speedy service. For service I'll definitely be back. read more

I recently (sept 2013) brought my bike here for a tuneup and was absolutely pleased with the service. A bike store is defined by the mechanics who run it, and the mechanic who helped me out was great. He was able to address all the issues my bike had (and that the previous bike store had not been able to fix) and took quite a bit of time both before repairs and after to go over all the details. I thought he was really knowledgeable and looked like he took pride in what he does - the bike has never run better! I had bought my bike about 2 years ago at the Raleigh Bicycle Chain with an extended 5 year warranty, and there were no issues in honoring the warranty on some items that needed to be replaced. For someone who rides at least a couple of times a week, and who had been dissatisfied with service at other bike stores in the area, it was a relief to find expert and professional service at the Bicycle Chain in Chapel Hill. I already mentioned this to my bike buddies and will certainly make this my bike store of reference. read more

I went in to get a new chain for my road bike and had a great experience. Mechanic went over my bike and gave me advice on other things that could be done over time. I do most of my own work on my bike but had never replaced a chain. He showed me how so I could do it myself next time. I am also thinking about getting a new bike and he had some great advice there too. read more
