This is a great stop on my way to the Merrimac premium outlets from my house. During the summer, it is always busy mostly in the evening, but on the weekends certainly has smaller crowds during the day. I can honestly say that the only thing that I've ever purchased from this location is there soft serve vanilla ice cream but it is extremely good, very creamy and for that reason I continue to frequent this joint. On the last day and then I went for this season I ordered a cone and the price was different then I had been charged the previous times there. Apparently, I mentioned that to the owner who was not happy and said in a very nasty way "I'm gonna have to talk to my girls about that, they should know the pricing and that's lost money for me!" I simply asked a question about price and the size of the ice cream cone that I got, which was extremely stingy from the owner of the business. Standing in line was confusing, there was a long, awkwardly quiet line on the right, but a staff member opened the window on the left. Some of us moved there and then right side opened up. I wish it wasn't CASH ONLY so I can play around with the options they have. Decided on a kiddie Orange Sherbert, which was quite Big (no complaints from me though). I ordered the kahlua brownie hard serve ice cream in a cup. Serving size is huge for a small. Ice cream tastes creamy but bland - not much kahlua flavor. Brownie pieces were small and not that good. Also, hard serve was too soft you should have to work to get a spoonful on the first few bites. However, the soft serve did look delicious and had an even bigger serving size for a small cone. Kiddie is really small so I'd say portion sizes are "true to size" and you probably want a small and not a kiddie size if you are over 5 years old and have trouble deciding between those options. I had driven by this place tons of times over the years and never stopped in thinking it was just like a Dairy Queen. I was very wrong. Yes they serve lots of soft serve and even do dips in a couple different flavors. The cones are very oversized so plan accordingly. They also have lots of hard ice cream flavors available. I live in San Francisco but I grew up probably less than 4000 feet from The Big 1. On hot summer nights when my parents weren't lazy, they'd take us to the Big 1. But they'd never let us order the Big 1 itself, "because it's just too much." We thought that the Big 1 must be the size of the cone on the Big 1 sign! Well, I was in Nashua for my 25th high school reunion in August and I stopped at The Big 1 with friends. We each decided to order The Big 1. I got chocolate and vanilla twist. And, well...the quantity of ice cream on the cone was obscene. I mean, I have literally never seen that much ice cream on a cone in my life, nor did I think within the realm of physics that having that much ice cream on a cone was possible. I've seen bridges collapse from less weight, is what I'm saying. THANK GOD the woman at the counter gave us extra large cups because shortly after receiving the cone, I had to abort the mission and dump the whole thing into the cup and eat with a spoon, due to excessive arm strain caused by the weight of the dessert. All in all, the ice cream was delicious and they sure offer a larger ice cream menu than we had when I was a kid in the 1980's! But you know how it is, today's kids ALWAYS have it better. read more

I have been coming here since I was a kid. The ice cream is great; offering both hard and soft serve. They are famous for their "Big 1" size (soft serve only...I recommend the twist) which easily feeds a family. You can even get this in a cone, but be warned that it is HUGE. The service is great. The servers are very friendly-friendlier than their competition across town. My kids love the "Nor'esters" which is essentially a blizzard. The prices are better than the competition as well. Definitely a go-to place. They do have hot dogs, popcorn, soda etc but come here for the ice cream. If I had to offer one complaint, it would be that the line protocol isn't always obvious. Sometimes people line up in one line to go to the next available window, and sometimes people line up directly behind each individual window. Watch the protocol or you might get screwed! read more
