And then you realize you aren't just driving in Rt 2. Your driving the Mohawk Trail. Highlights are many. Views of the Deerfield River, rolling farmland, the paper mills in Irving, trading posts complete with wigwams, the town of Florida and the Shunpike Historic sign. Just to name a few. Driving this road should be on every body's bucket. Just leave the kids at home- you don't want the serenity interrupted by a chorus of AreWeThereYet.

I didn't blame her because I'm not looking to get shot. I love The Band, but I'm also seen the movie Deliverance so we turned around. I'm not sure how friendly the current occupants of Big Pink are, but I'm not sure the neighbors are too keen on visitors driving down Parnassus - it feels like someone's private driveway. UPDATE: I see from Kathleen D.'s review from 2014 the current owners (Don and Sue) are friendly and actually rent out Big Pink for others to stay in. However, I notice the website (https://bigpinkbasement.com/) has updates from 2015 and I wasn't sure what the current situation was like in 2024. I reached out on the website's Contact Us form and here's the response I received: "Hi Julian, Yes you may come down the road at your own risk. A neighbor put up the signs. Pho, bahn mi, and milk tea are the tip of the iceberg of what's offered here. There's a plethora of delicious food options, loads of vendors and lots of people. They got a band playing in the main thoroughfare and karaoke towards the tail end of the night. We tried a smattering of dishes, ranging from mini shrimp pancakes, scallop noodles served in the shell, Takoyaki and meat skewers, grass jelly and lotus sticky rice. Each one very fresh, lots of flavor and a good price for the portion. The only dilemma being parking and the crowds. It's gotten very popular as of late, so if you don't go early they can run out of food. During our brief stint, they were out of sesame balls and onigiri, with lots of places running low on supplies. It's a fun experience and worth a try if you manage to get a chance to come there. It's a great community deserving of the popularity and it's a great fundraiser for the local church. Go in with an open mind and enjoy the adventure!

Parking is outside and sometimes you have to park 5-8 mins away from the falls . Not much of restrooms around . Lots of dogs in the water :) It was an amazing tint though ! Loved it . 5 stars !

As we were staying near Ludlow, I had put this on our schedule as a "check it out whenever time…read morepermits" item. We drove back after visiting some places to the north, and were passing this around 4 p.m. so we checked it out. This was in early October and the sun was just starting to go down. Though it was pre-dusk, it would be better to visit this site in full sunlight. There are 3 separate falls (the creatively named upper, middle, and lower). You access them from the main highway via a side road that starts as paved but soon becomes (good) dirt/gravel. The total length is less than 2 miles. You first get to a wide spot / parking area from which you can access the middle and lower falls. A trail leads down a hill where you must choose which falls to visit. The middle falls is impressive. It is probably the easiest one to access. The area from which you have the best view is a bit rocky, but navigable. It makes for nice photos. The lower falls appeared accessible from a side trail that descended a bit more steeply. You can also see it from above (somewhat) without descending. It appeared smaller and less photogenic than the middle falls. We then drove another 1/4 mile up the road (to its end) to check out the upper falls. There is a sharp short descent from the road to the top of the falls. It appeared to have a fairly large pool at the bottom and a flat dirt/sand area where some people had laid out a blanket for a picnic. The light was fading more so we skipped walking down the relatively gentle slope to check it out further. If you are in the area and have time, this is a nice spot to visit. It is within 3 miles of Ludlow. I cannot comment on what the swimming is like, but I saw references to that online (during summers, I guess).

If you ever find yourself driving along Route 8A in Charlemont, you are in for a great surprise…read more You get to drive over a covered bridge. Without a detour. The Bissell Covered Bridge is right on 8A just north of Route 2. It is a 2 lane bridge. But sadly no pedestrian walkway. Heading north on 8A, there is a turnoff to the Charlemont fairgrounds right before the bridge. There is no where to park there, but there is a viewing platform. Just on the other side of the bridge there is room for 3-4 cars to pull over. M There are windows on this bridge, but the walls are so thick there is no way to see anything through the windows on the interior of the bridge.

The oldest of…read morethe old King Philip's War was a nasty affair with atrocities and lots of horrible things occurring on both the Native American and English sides. Towns were burned and people murdered. No quarter was asked and none was given. One particularly brutal incident was called Nine Men's Misery. It started on March 20, 1676, when Capt Piece of the colonists let a group of troops after what was left of the Narragansett Tribe. The troops got a bit too over confident and walked right into an ambush and were slaughtered by the Narragansetts. Virtually all of the troops were killed but nine managed to survive the battle and were captured, tortured and then killed. Not exactly unexpected considering what the English were doing to the Narragansetts. Most of their villages were burned and the women and children executed . When other English troops found the bodies of the dead captives. they immediately buried the bodies and put up a monument site of rocks over the graves so the memory of the incident would never be forgotten. The pile of rocks have been tended to ever since and is now considered the oldest veterans memorial in the country. It's not exactly an exciting or aesthetically stunning memorial but it an extremely spooky and fascinating place to hike out and actually find. The area has lots of cool hiking trails besides the one leading to the memorial but the bugs are incredibly bad in these woods. Lovely stone walls and beautiful trees, this would probably be a great place for a winter or fall hike. A thoughtful place to reflect and remember what it was like back then during these horrible wars. Right and wrong, good and evil are just words. Pain, death and suffering was the reality.
