You don't have to be eating here to shop the gift shop, especially if you're just looking for some I-40 and Texas mementoes to remember your trip through Amarillo. I was eating dinner, but while I waited for the table I did my shopping. I considered a hat and a tshirt but ended up settling for a wooden "Big Texan" fridge magnet and a "Don't Mess With Texas" shot glass that had a bullet in it. Yeah, corny. But here we are. In past years, we have had good experiences at the Big Texan. However, we have eaten there twice this year and were not happy. The steaks were not cooked to order and overpriced. At one visit, the ribeye had so much grissle that it could not be eaten. Our most recent dinner there was worse. Our salads did not come out until after our steaks arrived. One steak that was brought out was the wrong steak. It's replacement did not arrive until everyone else in the party had finished our steaks. It was ordered as medium well and came out as medium rare. It could not be eaten. At this point, everyone else had finished their meals. The Caesar salads were drowning in dressing. The iced tea was very weak. We had to ask for more ice twice. Our server apologized for the issues and asked the manager to come to our table. The manager listened to our concerns. She offered a discount on our ticket. It was inadequate for the service and meals we received. We do not plan to return. read more

This is the gift shop inside of the infamous "Big Texan". Not to be confused with the actual home of the Man vs Food steak itself, but you can obviously pick up a few items within to prove that you were there. I was on a the hunt to get my parents a couple of t-shirts. My dad is a Route 66 fan and Mom, she loves when I bring her back anything. The funny thing was, Mom is a vegetarian and most of the cute shirts said something about a steak. I didn't think that she would like that too much, so I opted for a simple Amarillo t-shirt for her. The advertisement at the top of the t-shirt shelf indicated "buy two get one free". Later I found out that the two that you purchase have to be specific "Big Texan Steak Ranch" t-shirts. Oh well, that ain't happening, I'm not buying my vegetarian mom anything that says steak. As I was picking out my parents' t-shirts, the gals at the register area were oblivious to my presence. They were cussing and carrying on to the point that I thought for sure they didn't know that I was there. Nope, they knew that I was there. As a matter of fact, everyone that we came into contact at The Big Texan was somewhat gruff. You know, like the kind of people that would cuss in front of their grandmother? Yeah, the thought of doing that makes me cringe... maybe that's just me. Now every time that I see my parents wear those t-shirts I'm going to think of those foul mouth girls. read more

My dad brought me here in the 70's and I brought my son here for dinner this year. It's a classic when passing through Amarillo. It is a little pricy and touristy...but a fun event. Let me preface this with we had just completed about 120 mile hike at Philmont Scout Ranch.... so we were ready to eat! When you enter it's a little crowded and hectic but if you make your way through the door you can check in on the right at what looks like a lifeguard stand. They are friendly and quick to get your name and issue the square puck that lights up, we waited on the porch for about 20 minutes. We people watched as most took pictures of the oversized bull statue in the parking lot. We got the buzz on the puck and came in where you are directed to a line to get seated. It's very organized and quick. Upon entering the table you walk past all the Texas pictures and memorabilia on the walls. It's like you are walking into a hunting lodge in Hill Country of Texas. Large wood tables and chairs. There is an upstairs balcony that looks down to the lower seating area. All views point to the stage with about a 12 foot table with the LED timer above the table and the open kitchen grill. There specialty is eat a 72oz steak, salad, loaded potato, shrimp cocktail, and a roll...eat it all in 60 min and it's free.....No we didn't. I digress, we sat down quickly greeted by our appropriately dressed cowgirl, order drinks and fried pickles. They came out quickly and tasted amazing. Lightly breaded and seasoned perfectly, thin pickle planks, with a side of what tasted like fresh homemade ranch dressing. We each ordered the 18 oz Dallas cut - which is a thick cut ribeye, tender and juicy. It came out about the size of my plate, with the large fresh jalapeño as their signature garnish; the sides don't fit on the steak plate, I opted for the mashed potatoes gravy and fried okra; my son had French fries and Mac and cheese ( we missed our starchy sides on the hike!) all was served hot fresh and delicious. No room for desert, but they have fudge and ice cream on the way out if you like. Great place to show your Texas spirit. read more

Hands down the best BIG thang in TX ...on the road wanted to grab a steak for lunch,,,BOY were we surprised to enter into a great piece of history, HEY TRUCKERS every stop except petro you get a free limo ride the car has the horns and everything!! Along with TRUCKERS friendly parking, the food, atmosphere, entertainment (72 oz steak challenge) and our Cowboy Mike was AMAZING. We will definitely be back again this time Friday night so we can turn up and show out at fantastic BIG TEXAN don't forget your Cowboy hat and boots. read more

If you're no Texan, maybe... Hilarious obnoxious plates from restaurant are restaurant-grade...but priced too high for me to consider taking one home with me. German-style beer mugs also good quality, if high for anyone who's not a collector (and maybe the logo could use some work...I'd personally play up the roadside attraction element and tone down the color. Maybe just skinny ol Big Tex woulda got me to bite.) Would be cooler if the items seemed to be more Texan, instead of Made in China panders to stereotypes... but this ain't no boutique attached to a fine steakhouse. It wasn't "bad" as gift shops go, but "Meh. I've experienced better". If you're looking for a t-shirt about The Big Texan then they have plenty to offer. However, if you're looking for another type of souvenir about the restaurant then you're in for a disappointment. I mean, come on, let me buy a life sized replica of the 72oz. steak or something. Although they did have a bumper sticker with a graphic of Texas and the slogan "My state is bigger than your state" on it. When I asked the two young ladies at the register if anyone from Alaska ever commented on that bumper sticker they were confused. One of the girls asked why anyone from Alaska would be mad because Texas is the biggest state. Yep, folks. Texas education at its best. read more

Like the restaurant next door, the gift shop and attached attractions are over the top yet well worth a visit. Gift Shop This is likely the largest gift shop attached to a restaurant in America. I don't work for Guinness or anything, but this has to be a record breaker. There were massive walls of t-shirts, cowboy hats, stickers, furniture, art, cutlery, dishes, and weird holographic ghost pictures. If you could imagine anything for sale in a gift shop anywhere, it was probably available here. Dessert Counter Holy shit. My kids love sugar as much as the next juvenile. I tried to steer them away from dessert, but this massive ice cream, cake and pie counter was smack dab in the middle of the exit. One sight of it and the begging began. I decided we should get a couple pieces of cake to slit in the room since we were stuffed from dinner. I didn't actually see them cut our pieces and was a little surprised when the containers we were given were full sized to-go boxes. The bag they were in seemed to weigh about five pounds. When we opened them up at the hotel my kids got mad at me for the string of expletives I unleashed. The slices of cake were as big as my head. Not only were they huge, but the carrot cake was one of the best I've ever had. To give you an idea of the quantity of cake we had, we ate on them for two entire days and still threw away half. One slice would be enough for probably four people. Other Stuff There was a shooting gallery, bar, bathrooms and other weird things. The highlight of this area was the clown who made balloon animals. Sure the animals were fun for the kids, but he was quite the showman and comedian. If you get him to make a sword, make sure your kid doesn't drop it in the parking lot of your hotel like mine. Talk about a massive fit. A fit cured by a massive hunk of cake, but a fit nonetheless. Whatever you do, don't skip this part of The Big Texan. read more

Cute gift shop. Of course it's a tourist attraction but that's what stopping by these places are about when traveling. You have to embrace it and not complain about those cute souvenirs. What I am complaining about it the lack of customer service at the register, specifically the older blonde female, who didn't smile, treated other customers poorly during our visit, seemed annoyed at the kids in line before us and when it came to my purchase, she never smiled. I wished her a good day before I left. I think it should have been the other way around since I contributed to this Big Texan Steak House gift shop. I hope management reads this and speaks to her because this is no way to treat customers and visitors who travel through Texas. I gave this a three star rating because of my complaint. read more

I've been wanting to come to the restaurant for years, but it didn't work out again this trip. I did, however, get to the gift shop since my niece's husband needed a ride here to pick up another Big Texas Ranch cap for his uncle in Chicago--I guess they're all the rage there. It was definitely an interesting store to peruse through. I thought I might get a can of rattlesnake to try but either they didn't have it or it was too expensive--now I can't remember which. They did have a wide variety of hats to choose from and a lot of other items including a plethora of Route 66 themed items and a some jewelry. All I ended up getting was a Texas Praline candy--a favorite ever since my daughter introduced me to them a dozen or more years ago. And a couple of postcards. Cashier girl in gift shop was RUDE and could not care less if I was there or not. Very unfriendly and good thing I didn't get her name (short brown hair, cold eyes, no customer service manners, about 5'4"ish inches tall). Full review: We stayed in an RV resort about 10 miles away from this tourist steakhouse spot. We called for the free limo ride to the restaurant as we wanted to have drinks, so happily accepted the free ride to and from this restaurant to save on cab fares. We had been there once before and had not been impressed with any of it. This time, we had a waiter, Miguel, who made our visit so much fun. At this restaurant, you are quite often seated with other guests at a large table. Some may or may not like that, but we were seated next to very nice people and when the 3 guys in came by to play music for anyone requesting it, my boyfriend said "I need a love song" and they stopped, sang to me while it brought tears to my eyes. They sang to me & my man. We were holding hands and it was so sweet that it seemed like the whole restaurant was quiet and listening to them. That made the night special but in addition, I had the blackened grilled salmon and some sides that were all fresh, tasteful and large quantities. Miguel, our waiter, made some great suggestions and had my dinner served with grilled tomatoes and some fresh jalapenos, which I loved. My blacked grilled salmon was some of the best salmon I'm ever had. My boyfriend said that his prime rib was cooked perfectly and the portions were too large for him. Miguel was one of the best waiters that we have ever had and we told that to the Manager They have a really nice outdoor patio area. Fun décor throughout the restaurant and lots to look at, but I agree with the previous reviewer as the pics through the hallway to bathroom do look like haunted house pictures, so small children might not like that. We will definitely go back if we are ever in the area and will for sure request Miguel as our server. All the other servers working that night looked like it was work and looking at the clock. Miguel wanted us to have fun and we really did have fun. The only negative experience that I had was that I purchased a bunch of jewelry in their gift store and the next day, I realized that I had bought 2 of the same pieces of jewelry ($33 for one, $25 for another, $22 for another, etc.) and when I stopped back by the next morning, the rude young girl in the store refused to let me return the duplicate pieces that were still in the bag with tags on and receipts). I would go back for Miguel and the salmon, but certainly not go back to the rude girl in the gift shop to buy anything. read more

Great gift shop, super busy, helpful staff, and they have printed penny machines, my favorite! Best thing is up by the cash register, a Jackalope. Just wish they'd have some more oddities like that instead of a lot of normal run of the mill trinkets. read more

So FUN and delicious! We did not get to see the 72 oz steak being eaten but the service was nice and fun. Food is in big portions and so are the drinks (Texas, am I right?). It is expensive though, what do you expect? Fun gift shop with a live rattlesnake. If you're looking for a Texas souvenier, that's the place to get it. read more
