There's a large outdoor working train display of Rosenberg, two train cars available to tour, landscaped outdoor picnic seating, and a multipurpose building with a room to entertain small children and directly across the hall are multiple large indoor railroad displays. Walking is involved both indoor and outdoor, so plan accordingly with comfy shoes, although not overwhelming so, unless walking restrictions involved. Wed - Sun hours. They had an area with science interactive areas that was free and an area with dinosaur history. I'd recommend if you want a bigger full experience to check out the main location one in the museum district as this SL one is quite small.

Far from the feeling we received. I called earlier about a tour and was hurried off the phone because she was busy. I gave grace because I had done my research and learned it was a small staff and I am sure she was operating in multiple roles at the time. Upon arrival, as said, I did expect a more welcoming environment. Even a "Hello, welcome! Is this your first time?" With added instruction or detail on the exhibit. She walked up to us with phone in hand, told us what exhibit was being displayed, asked us to sign in and told us where to start. That's it. You are able to request a guided tour in advance or do a self paced tour. We did the self paced tour and when we had questions, we asked the lady but received very short and curt answers. She either didn't want us to be there or she didn't want to be there. Either way her lack luster customer service would make one second guess a return visit. The exhibit that was on display was Bayou City Stewards: America from our Perspective. We enjoyed seeing the art from the participants who shared pieces of their collection. My suggestion would be that the donators supplied a brief description of their pieces to include information similar to what the pieces are, where they are from, what the piece meant to them and why they chose to include that piece. It would have added value to the exhibit by giving the audience a closeness to the piece and the contributor. It could also serve as conversation starters. I will say the lack of description left it up to audience interpretation and conversation around the pieces to figure out the what and why. I do like the museum changes the exhibits often so every trip can be a different cultural experience. Admission is free and could serve as great "field trip" for families, friends, art lovers and the like. Change the greeter/worker and this place could easily be a four or five star rating. Overall, 6 out of 10.

To celebrate Pride Month, HMAAC showcased Paris is Burning in their Cinema Cafe and even had a few…read moresnacks available for us. I had watched the TV series Pose a few years ago, so was happy to learn more about the ballroom and vogue culture ascension during the 1980s. The exhibits were enthralling, especially the Bayou City Stewards: America From Our Perspective collection. There's SO much to get lost in! It's amazing to me how all of this work came from local residents. The detailed community quilt on display upstairs and all of the work in the Bert Long Gallery, especially the vanity dress that reminded me of my grandma's old dresser and the Cash Money Records 1997 poster displayed alongside a jazz poster, was a nod to how vast and diverse art can be :). I only wish there was some sort of exhibition write-ups available that provided more context to what was on view. However, I understand that this community cultural hub is solely donation-based so resources may be slim. That's all the more reason to support the gift shop! I've added the Juneteenth 101 - Popular Myths and Forgotten Facts by D.J. Norman-Cox to my growing TBR.

It's been nearly 50 years since the Asia Society made its Houston debut and has been an important…read morecultural center with the rise of Asian everything over the last several decades. While there are many cultural institutions in the Museum District, this is still one of my favorite destinations in the city. The building's architecture is incredibly unique, which is often the reaction from most people who come across it for first time. The modern and elegant touches are the work of renowned Japanese architect Yoshiro Taniguchi. The entire place feels peaceful, with a unique combination of stone, wood, gardens, glass, and natural light. It feels so simple, but yet is so sophisticated. The gallery spaces are beautiful. There is also a performing arts theater that is intimate and memorable. It's a fabulous place to attend an event, explore on one's own, and more importantly, learn something interesting and new. All visitors to Houston or even locals to Houston, owe it to themselves to experience the Asia Society. This isn't simply a museum or a place to check it out a play, it's really an opportunity to engage. There's always something interesting happening here and it's a great way to soak in a bit of history while embracing the many learnings through connection, art, architecture, and culture.

There is street parking and also a dedicated paid public parking right across the street. I paid for parking and for 2 hours I believe I paid $7. With two kiddos I can't risk iffy parking. Inside was so vibrant, clean, and felt so happy! Kin cafe is located right before the entry. So if you just wanted to come for the cafe then you can without having to pay the entry fee. For a very laufey day they had 2 special drinks which I consumed and enjoyed! Also grabed a miso chocolate cookie. They even warmed it so it was the perfect treet and a little messy with melted chocolate. Very interactive inside so my kiddos were never bored.and they even learned a bit. The "train" was fun. I'll say my kids were confused and disappointed that it was a really train that moved but they loved the inside and had fun traveling to also the places even if it was by tv screen. Since it was a very laufey day I believe certain things were closed so I can't speak to all the area of the place but what we got to see and do was enjoyable. Had we not made our way to the restroom we would have missed the interactive drum display. Now my kiddos were all about this. The colors and origami were so cute! Even the gift shop section was adorable that we did end up buying some.croxhered key chains. We did however missed out on the laufey merch. My kiddos really wanted me to get something.
