I chose Sommers Tax Services almost entirely based on the fact that they actually have a website with some decent information on it, unlike a lot of tax preparers in the area. I'm so glad I did! Ralph was friendly and knowledgeable, and I felt immediately at ease with him. I explained my situation to him and he was immediately able to clear up some of the questions I had. We went through my documentation together and he talked me through the various credits and deductions and my eligibility for them as he completed my federal and local tax returns. He could have e-filed my returns immediately at the end of my appointment, but he noticed a weird discrepancy in my W-2 (which I would never have noticed), and suggested I talk to my employer's payroll department about it first. Since I haven't used a tax preparer/advisor before, I am not sure how their rates compare with other businesses providing these services, but I felt that the fee was totally reasonable. I got great service and really appreciate the peace of mind of having a tax person who I feel comfortable going to with my questions. I would recommend Sommers Tax Services to anyone filing their personal taxes, although I think they specialize in small businesses. I'd especially recommend them to people like me who feel their tax situation is getting a little too complicated to handle themselves and need someone to talk things out with. I wish I would have gone to see them in 2010 - I could have had a lower tax bill with some pre-planning!

If you must use them, GET YOUR COST TO FILE UPFRONT-PRIOR to them filing your returns. A client just used them and AFTER they filed charged them $290 after booking the appointment online with the understanding that it would cost $89 plus a charge ($75) for the state. The preparer-Veronica admitted that she did not tell the client it would be nearly DOUBLE the cost before filing! When the location manager Roberta Cleary was asked about it she did nothing and said the client should have in essence figured it out by reading all the signs in the office and offered no consideration in spite of the preparer not following procedures. STEER CLEAR of this location. SHAME ON THEM!

I recommend checking out H&R because while they cost some money, they are good at their customer service, it is a relaxing experience, and they do offer things like peace of mind and identity shield to protect you if there are any mistakes on your taxes via litigation and note any attempts to steal your identity. They also offer direct deposit to your accounts for your refund and keep all your stuff online in a big green cloud so you don't have to jam a bunch of paper work into a file cabinet.

Even the information provided changed at times. Some times we'd get a phone call, sometimes no call back. I have had to call and leave messages and hound them to respond. And each time it was as if they were doing me a favor, that is until the bill arrived. Mistakes such as entering in the wrong routing number for electronic payment and then I end up with a threatening IRS note with a penalty, only to now have to pay the firm to unwind their own screw up. Fittingly they actually dropped my wife and I as clients. Stating they just couldn't handle the amount of business they had. Blessing in disguise for sure! Good riddance.
