The Orchard is a gorgeous senior care home in Ventura County. I visited with my Dad and was so impressed with the beauty of the facility. It feels like a home, but with all the things a senior needs. My husband and I have lived here for 18 months and are very happy. The grounds are beautiful and pleasant for walking. The staff are all helpful and friendly and listen to any concerns we have. I especially appreciate that they are aware of each resident's situation and will do wellness checks if we are concerned about someone we haven't seen for a few days. The food is very good and management listens to any requests we have about the menu, many of which have been accommodated. Our activities director is amazing. There are games, crafts, entertainment and exercise classes for all who are interested. We have made many new friends here and look forward to greeting new arrivals. All of this at a more reasonable cost than any other facility we visited. read more

I believe I've found the premier senior residence in Ventura County. After visits to several other senior communities and discussions with family, I knew The Orchard was for me. The facilities are inviting and my one-bedroom apartment nicely kept, but what sold me was the caliber of the staff, my neighbor residents, and the patio/porch off my living room. Those who work here are warm and welcoming, and are clearly interested in my life and my concerns. As for the residents, I've made friends with so many, it's hard to believe we didn't grow up together. To top it off, my patio/porch looks over magnolia trees! Another big plus for me is the fact that free transportation is provided by The Orchard's van, as I no longer drive. (Many residents do, though, and there's adequate and convenient parking for them.) Hey, we can enjoy terrific live entertainment here, too, during one of the weekly happy hours or socials--not to mention New Year's Eve. Of course, there are plenty of other venues for fun, including groups and clubs dedicated to various interests. Free of charge, residents can use the nicely-appointed side dining room for private parties and the good-sized house on the campus for larger gatherings. There are too many other amenities to cover here, so I suggest prospective residents make an appointment, come for lunch, talk to staff, and look for themselves. Only a month ago, I did, and now I can sum up in one word what The Orchard is to me: home. read more

The livability at the Bonaventure has degraded substantially from my last review. There are currently NO managers at the facility. The last manager was let go after one month on the job. The assistant manager has been on an extended leave. Workers, such as the night cook, are being assigned as managers but they are not trained, nor do they really care about the well being and comfort of the residents. They are short staffed in other areas too which has resulted in elimination of activities or long waits at meal times. The dining situation has also dramatically declined. They are not offering varied enough entrees for those with special dietary needs. They have eliminated the "always available" selections which helped mitigate when either taste or dietary restrictions excluded selecting any of the limited choices on the planned menu. Another warning about the lack of management. There are no longer on-site managers at night. Instead residents are given a wireless alert badge that calls an offsite (out of state) dispatch center. That dispatch center then calls the Fire Department, no matter what the issue is, such as residents locking themselves out of their apartments. The Fire Department has received so many unnecessary calls that they have started charging a hefty fee to the residents for each call. They are also offering residency to individuals who should be in memory care for their own and other's safety. I discourage anyone from considering living at the Bonaventure. It is not a retirement community as advertised. Rather it is an example of how a corporation are using ill advised cost cutting measures to their bottom line benefit to the detriment of their customers (the residents). read more

My mom just arrived at Bonaventure and was thrilled at how beautiful it is. She was aware of the quarantine time and was so happy to hear about how the community was going to keep her involved and call her daily until quarantine is over. The next day was her birthday and family & friends were concerned because they could not reach her. I emailed the front desk and they immediately sent someone to the unit. My mom had her phone on silent, and couldn't find it. They helped her find the phone, turned it on for her and connected her to the wifi! Everyone was notified that mom was well and they can call with birthday wishes! The immediate action at The Bonaventure really helped us know that there are people there to help, they went into action immediately which puts the family at ease because we know she is in good hands. Ginny emailed me back with this information and I was truly relieved. read more

If this is a place for retirement it is the worst managed location for retired folks. They had a fire hazard that they were warned about because it had caught on fire temporarily. Also were advice of similar problem and their answer was that they needed to get approval before they did anything at all. When lives are at stake, there should be someone on site that can make the right decision before a drastic problem occurs. There are many other similar services in the area with good services, I cannot mention names because that would look like I am trying to help some other business with my review. My real interest is to warn anyone who is looking to protect their parents. This is not the place. read more

Bonaventure - Day 3 - Mom has been installed for a few days. The room as-is is pretty banal; white walls, grey carpet, Ikea-style wood cabinets. We rented a second-story 1-bedroom with great light. We painted, dressed the windows, hung flat-screen televisions and purchased new furniture for her that fit the room. It quickly became a very fancy room at a high-end hotel; which actually is supported by the tasteful decoration throughout the common areas. We've meet many residents, several who have lived 5-8 years in the apartments and they expressed that they were happy and engaged members of the community. One, a spry 90-something Okie had me in stitches telling joke after joke. All of them were very sweet and they all seemed well-adjusted to their lifestyle at The Bonaventure. Mom seemed to meet a few people she liked quickly, including a woman who shares her beloved sister's name. I was surprised by the restaurant-style service; an unnecessary classy addition. The meals look balanced and healthy with modest portions. Regular specials; a pumpkin bread the day we visited, add variety to the standard coffee, eggs, toast, juice menu. Mom reported that the bread they've baked has been delicious. And though walkers neatly aligned the walls during meal-time, the population seems quite mobile and able-bodied. Certainly, the milieu doesn't feel hospital-esque, but more cruise-like, as another here reported and one resident confirmed whilst being interviewed. The managers we've met have been sincere and helpful, despite the difficulties we present, they've been courteous and accommodating. So far, The Bonaventure looks like it is a hit. My husband and I just got back from a two night stay at The Bonaventure where my Mom lives. We were very impressed by how warm and friendly the staff was, especially Stephanie at the front desk, and Bill and Jim, the managers. The facility was clean and beautiful inside and out. The food was very good and the servers were nice and attentive. We felt fortunate to be able to stay in the guest suite, not only because it was super comfy, but also (more importantly) because staying on the premises allowed us to spend the most possible time visiting with my Mom. We got to meet her friends and see first hand what angels they are to her, and we even got to participate in some of the fun activities with her. We are very impressed with The Bonaventure and would highly recommend it. read more

My son and I came to the Bonaventure looking for a place for my mom. Though we have seen other amazing places in the area, the Bonaventure has had the best food and the kindest staff. My son and I were blown away by the welcoming and loving environment. Their rooms are clean, and the sizes vary to fit with however much room mom decides she needs. We had a long chat with Trent at the front desk who was very helpful and showed us to a seat at lunch where the food was delicious and the service was quick. After the meal we met with Jim who was kind enough to take the time out of his busy day to show us around, we took our time in each room and were very happy with what we saw. Finishing out the tour we talked with Karen in the office who swapped stories with us and made us feel at home. I loved the building and the staff to death, we will be back! My father relocated from Georgia all the way out to The Bonaventure! I am so thankful for the excellent facility and caring staff that welcomed him. I recently visited for the first time and was further impressed. They have guest suites that can be reserved for out of town family, the amenities my Dad has to enjoy are plentiful, and he has even taken up the hobby of billiards! Another important aspect for me is the continued development of my dad's social life. I am happy to hear from him about all the "field trips" the Bonaventure takes them on, and how many friendships he has made. My family and I live on the other side of the country and I feel happy and content that he has found a new home in The Bonaventure. read more

We moved Mom here this past May/June. Since that time there has been a tremendous amount of changes in staff, benefits and the amenities. Promises made during the 'sales' presentations and facility walk-throughs were never honored. The promise of a Resident-Ambassador to team with Mom to show her "the ropes" during her first two weeks on site never transpired. When staff was approach with questions that would have been answered through the experience with the promised ambassador, mom was given short and rude responses. Recently more of benefits that made this place somewhat appealing have been taken away: i.e. 24-hour on-site staff and availability of transportation. Residents have now been hired/assigned to be responsible for any emergency that occurs after hours (7 pm to 7 am). In the past 5 months the changes to the meals have been nothing but disappointing. The focus has obviously shifted from a flavorful and healthful diet to one that meets an economic goal. The promise of a low-salt diet being available were just words and another empty promise to entice a signature on a contract. Enforcement of the non-smoking policy in the common areas appears to have become optional, as residents and guests are being allowed to smoke within steps of the entryways. Within the past 3 to 4 months management has had an almost 100% turnover (only one of the management staff present in May/June is still on staff as of this review). As one other reviewer has commented, the remaining staff is rude and condescending (to residents and guests). Residents are ill-informed about the on-going changes and are left to their own devices to figure things out. Communication is very poor. All that the residents are being told is that "Corporate is making changes" or the "Someone from Corporate will be here soon to explain the changes". The reality is that the residents have to deal with local management. Local management needs to take on some roll of advocacy for the residents to "Corporate" and discontinue using "Changes from Corporate" for an excuse to be rude and condescending to the residents. For that Corporate person who may read this review at some time in the future: we have attempted to discuss our concerns with the 'new' local management. The response we received was a dismissive: "What changes?" then a turned-back and walk away. read more

My mother moved into the Bonaventure Holiday property in Ventura a few years ago. At first she loved the beautiful grounds, friendly staff and healthy meal options. Yet since late 2017, the quality of life at the Bonaventure has substantially degraded. There seems to be a correlation between these problems and the recent change in management for all Holiday properties (consisting of the newly formed Solstice Senior Living: a joint venture between Carlsbad, California-based management company Integral Senior Living and real estate investment trust (REIT) NorthStar Healthcare Income). Since the establishment of Solstice Senior Living (SSL), the food quality at the Bonaventure has substantially degraded. They used to provide healthy flavorful meals with many fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as options for residents with special dietary needs. Now they have a very limited, unhealthy menu consisting of overly cooked vegetables with no nutritional value and processed starchy foods high in fat and sugar. All Holiday properties are serving the exact same menu. The Bonaventure has also had problems hiring and keeping qualified managers to oversee the Ventura Holiday facility. Instead they are using untrained kitchen and dining room staff to run these office and management positions. There is no phone number posted for residents to complain about these problems to corporate headquarters, so they are left feeling helpless. Not to mention that residents (who pay a minimum of $3400 per month) have to endure predictable annual rent increases. Several residents at the Bonaventure have moved and many more (including my mother) are considering leaving because of these problems. So unless things change quickly, I discourage anyone from considering living at the Bonaventure. The energy it takes to relocate our beloved elders is stressful and disorienting, so do them the great favor of avoiding all Holiday properties. read more

I am so happy with this amazing facility. My mom has been here for the past two years. Staff is friendly and attentive . Managers are very involved and accessible. They provide plenty of organized activities such as pet therapy and live music. They took their time and effort to celebrate moms birthday, As well as other residents living there. Generally every time I visit mom this place is always well kept and clean. The only issue I've had was regarding the bus routes, we were told and were under the impression that the bus ran 7 days a week, but it doesn't.but overall I made the right Choice with this facility. read more

My mom has been living here a couple of years. It is like a very nice hotel or cruise ship considering the activities. The place is clean and bright and social. There is a hair dresser on site. Weekly maid service. Wonderful meals. Laundry room. Activity room, pool tables, media room, bingo, cards, bus service. The management changes hands often but the quality of care doesn't change. The staff are very friendly and helpful and tolerant. When the rates increased and mom didn't have the money, we were able to negotiate. They allow pets. Visitors can stay for many days at a time. This is an independent living place. There is a separate agency on site, Assisted Registry services, that will provide aides but we found their service to be very substandard and fired them. My mom needs more assistance now, sadly the Bonaventure does not provide it so we will have to be moving mom to assisted living. read more

We helped my mother-in-law move in awhile ago she was very excited after receiving the tour. It's very clean and the program director is very nice,the apartment is great. However a few things did not meet up with what she was lead to believe during her tour. 1. She has dietary needs that she was told would not be" no problem the kitchen will take care of it" well I guess if don't mind having a fruit cup as your main dish. She needs to supplement her meals in her apartment or go hungry.She is paying for services she doesn't even receive. 2. She was told her apartment would be "cleaned weekly " well they change the sheets and and once around lightly with a sweeper. 3. She was told there is a shuttle service to town for shopping and appointments, only to find its only during a two hour window once a week. 4. The dining room is so under staffed she waits up to 45 minutes for a meal. 5. Along with others she complains that the staff treats the residents like children .She is a very wonderful classy woman and like us all she resents being treated this way. Come on she is a paying customer respect should be at the forefront. She hasn't given up hope as of yet and she has met some nice people there. It is our hope as well that the management would listen to / read reviews and make a few changes. read more

Owned by Holiday Retirement, this facility for seniors boasts a warm caring environment with an apartment, 3 meals & activities. HOWEVER, this place failed miserably! Management is rude, condescending to support staff, families, & residents. Even after living there over a year, my vegetarian mom was continuously expected to eat meat & was served tangy, citrus foods after we were assured her diet needs would be absolutely no problem. Even after meeting with the chef, management & staff, her meals continued to be substandard & tasteless. Management intimidates the staff & residents in order to avoid addressing concerns & to save money. Caring environment?! That's a joke. A grand total of 4 staff members (out of 20) were nice. Everyone else was pathetic. Family concerns were met with disdain & annoyance. Remember this is home for the residents; home should be welcoming & comfortable. If you love your family member, DO NOT make it their "home"... you will regret it. read more
