Book Peddler ended up being one of our favorite discoveries in West Yellowstone. In a town where breakfast options can be somewhat limited, service can move at a different pace than larger cities, and many establishments don't open particularly early, Book Peddler fills a nice niche by serving good coffee, made-to-order breakfast items, and offering a genuinely enjoyable bookstore to browse before heading into Yellowstone. I'd still suggest checking their website for seasonal hours, but we found them open early enough to comfortably fuel up before entering the park. The coffee program is surprisingly strong for a small tourist town bookstore café. They offer several locally roasted coffees, including lighter roasts, darker roasts, and decaf options, along with espresso drinks and specialty coffee beverages. We found the coffee to be among the better options available in town. The breakfast menu was another pleasant surprise. Rather than relying solely on pastries or grab-and-go items, many of the offerings are prepared to order. You'll find breakfast burritos, sandwiches, vegetarian selections, and meat options, giving most travelers enough variety to satisfy differing tastes. It's one of the few places in West Yellowstone where you won't be steered towards elk or bison! During our visit they offered both vegetable and ham quiches, along with chili. Everything we tried was fresh, satisfying, and felt like a step above what we expected to find in a small gateway community. Service is solid, though perhaps not spectacular by large-city standards. Orders can take a little while during busier periods, but honestly it felt very much on pace with West Yellowstone as a whole. The staff was friendly, accommodating, and seemed genuinely interested in making sure guests had a good experience. Given the town's relative isolation and dependence on deliveries, it's also not uncommon for certain items to occasionally be unavailable, whether that's a specific milk option, produce item, or pastry. We found the staff to be upfront about availability, and it never materially detracted from the experience. The bookstore itself is worth spending some time in, even if you originally stopped by only for coffee. The selection leans heavily into Yellowstone, national parks, western fiction, travel, and regional history. It's a much better place to find a unique souvenir or gift to bring home than another shop selling the same T-shirts, magnets, and trinkets found throughout town. Final Thoughts: Book Peddler quietly does several things well at once. It's a good coffee shop, a surprisingly strong breakfast stop, and an independent bookstore that rewards browsing. If you're spending a few days in West Yellowstone, I would recommend making at least one morning visit before heading into the park. Cool vibe with a souvenir shop/bookstore and coffee shop in one. Breakfast burrito was a little odd as the eggs were really mushy (powdered eggs??) but I did like that they grilled the tortilla. I went here many times on my vacation and enjoyed their mochas. They have milk, dark, and white which is fun as most places only have two of the three. It's pretty reasonably priced and they have alternative milks. I didn't try any of their backed goods but they had a couple gluten free choices as well as giant crossiants both sweet and savory. This Review is only for the coffee bar. The younger staff is very sweet and hardworking. Unfortunately, they are not well trained by management ok some basic espresso techniques. I asked the baristas if they can make me a plain latte but I don't want it mixed. The sweet young guy asked me if the drink was to my liking. The manager then jumped in the conversation and rudely said in an extremely condescending manner "THIS ISNT STARBUCKS" .... I tried to kindly explain that "1. I don't like Starbucks, 2. Several local coffee shops are able to do this using techniques" she then cut me off to say "we don't take the tools to do that!" .... The absolute irony is that the drink doesn't require any fancy tools just a knowledge on coffee...Anyway, the other parts of the store are unique. However, I will be leaving the below in case they care to learn and boost business: Layered Iced Latte Summary 1) Sweeten the milk: Sugar increases milk density, keeping it at the bottom. 2) Keep coffee/espresso unsweetened: Sugarless coffee is lighter and floats on top. 3)Pack the ice: Fill the glass completely to slow liquid movement. 4)Pour milk first: Fill the glass two-thirds full with the sweetened milk.Pour coffee slowly: Direct the coffee onto an ice cube to prevent mixing. read more

I called them on June 13th to ask if they had vegan milk such as oat milk. The employee confirmed that they did. I asked if they had vegan meal options for breakfast and was told that they didn't. Okay, that's given and quite expected. My then friend (now ex-friend) drove from a hostel in Idaho as we going to start our day exploring Yellowstone. I was set on getting a hot matcha latte with oat milk (something that I frequently get). The cafe was located in the back of the bookstore. They have a few tables and chairs back there. I ordered a medium drink and got a water for the day. The water was mountain spring water which is really cool. The latte was smooth, not gritty, but definitely frothy. It had a slight vanilla flavor to it, but not overpowering the matcha. It hit the spot and gave me energy to complete the day. It was tasty for sure. I ended up returning the following day to get another matcha latte. They got some pretty cool books in the peddler shop and a few souvenirs. The price was fairly cheap. Being a PNW guy, two of the things I try to find are good bookstores and coffee places. This is both. They have a great selection of books, especially on Yellowstone and the west. Come here if you want to spend $10 on a medium coffee that taste mediocre at best and want some robot with a bad attitude service. My wife and I stopped by because she wanted a coffee. We were nicely greeted by a very friendly blonde lady and said "she'll (the brunette lady with glasses) be able to help you out". So we scooched over to her and she didn't say anything, no smile, no "Hi", nothing. We ordered a medium coffee with a splash of oat milk (which we were charged $3) and vanilla which was another dollar. WILD. Coffee in LA isn't even that much. I asked to use the restroom and she said "I'll give you the code In a second..." she waited till our transaction was approved and then provided the restroom code. What did she think we were gonna do? Steal the toilet? THEN she asked my wife if she wanted to leave a tip after that wonderful coffee shop customer service she provided. What a fun place! I stopped in The Book Peddler very briefly on my family's way back from Yellowstone National Park. I loved that this was part bookstore, part gift shop, and part coffee shop (a minimal coffee menu, but it still counts!). West Yellowstone is a pretty touristy area (at least to this tourist) but I felt immense vibes of authenticity coming from The Book Peddler. They had a pretty cool local Montana section stacked with great geographically centric books and guides that would surely make any nature enthusiast ecstatic. I ordered myself a drip coffee and soaked in exploring all their fun trinkets, Montana-made gifts, and mountainous decor. They had a small food menu as well, though I didn't order anything from it. One of the associates was super chatty and told me about their Yellowstone specific cookbooks, guides, and other travel books. The store staff refused to allow me to use the restroom, stating it was for paying customers only. I promised that I would be purchasing a book, as I had finished mine the previous evening. I had been looking at books and checking Goodreads to find a good one. I had it narrowed down to a few but needed more time. I wasn't allowed to use their restroom while I made up my mind. I had to walk 2-3 blocks to the visitor's center and use that restroom and then come back to finish shopping. I did return and purchased a book, as I said I would. There were no other stores selling books or I wouldn't have returned. Ridiculous! Whatever happened to basic human decency? read more

I stopped by here for some food before heading to YNP. I had the ham and cheese croissant which was so flaky with a slight crunch and the pastry actually had some seasoning which I appreciate. I got a sandwich here, Loaded Lite Shotgun which has egg with pesto, bacon, turkey and provolone. Since I stopped by in the morning it was slightly soggy. I can only imagine how it tasted fresh. Pet peeve about this place (COVID-19 related) was why make masks necessary for customers and employees don't wear their masks properly?? West Yellowstone is a weird place. Especially in the off season. There were only 2 or 3 breakfast options so we picked this one. And it was very meh. They were out of half the things on the menu (at 7am) and so we ordered two lattes and a $9 granola. She gave us a granola that literally filled 2 inches of the 7 inch tall to go cup. Maybe 6 bites of food. We went back and did a "seriously?" And they grudgingly gave us more. But they were if course out of the milk. The coffees were decent but super weird experience. read more

If I could separate the bookstore part of this business from the café part, the bookstore would get 5 stars and the café would get around 3. Bookstore: Great little place for books, gifts, souvenirs, etc. Surprisingly good selection for such a small town. If you're visiting the town and want to pick up a Montana-themed cookbook or something, they've got you. Café: This is where I'm a little bit split. The pastries and coffee are superb; in fact, if you're going here for coffee alone it's probably one of the top three spots in town. The sandwiches, though...VERY pricey and nothing special from what I've experienced. Everything has a very distinct "I could've made this better at home" look + taste. The bagels are the worst offenders. I'm pretty sure they're the Sara Lee brand you can get at the grocery store down the street--they have the same spongy texture, plus Sara Lee is the only other everything bagel I know of where they put whole sunflower seeds *inside* the bread. Blegh. I've heard that the breakfast burritos are pretty good, but I haven't tried them yet. My recommendation: Go somewhere else for grains/protein, then stop here for a huge chocolate croissant and a nice coffee or tea. read more

This store had a few really awesome cards and postcards by an artist (pictured), and a small bookstore with a very limited selection. The rest of the place had pretty tacky souvenir and home items. It is easy to make a stop over here on your way to the Yellowstone entrance. = S E R V I C E = I am grateful that they are one of the few places open at 7 AM during the winter season. However, the service was inconsistent. The first time I went there, I had a very cold reception. Both people at the counter were unfriendly and maskless. In my experience, I find that frequently businesses with multiple points of focus (ie: in the case of The Book Peddler--books and coffee), oftentimes one aspect is lacking. Not so at The Book Peddler. The bookshop? Amazing, eclectic, varied, and wonderful. The coffee shop? Charming, delicious, rich, and decadent. The bookshop has everything you'd want in an independent bookseller. The usual variety of quirky, popular, and classical literature as well as a sprinkling of intensely local (hello Yellowstone!) themed collections. At the coffee shop, I ordered a salted caramel mocha and a triple berry cream cheese croissant. Oh heck yes. The croissant was made with what tasted to be incredibly fresh berries. Their goods are baked daily (they sell day old pastries for a discount) and are all made-from-scratch-deliciousness. My dining companion raved about his cinnamon roll that had the loveliest hint of orange zest (I may or may not have begged a bite). They serve a variety of pastries, quiche, and breakfast burritos for breakfast. For lunch they have a variety of sandwiches and salad. The mocha was solid. The espresso was wonderfully rich and the chocolate was decent. They used the salted caramel syrup as opposed to a caramel sauce paired with sea salt. Not my favorite way to make a salted caramel mocha--but decent and by no means bad. The service was a bit clunky. But, our cashier seemed new, so perhaps that was the deal there. Other than that? They're made with fresh, quality ingredients and their spreads are delicious. Their "Fruit" Smoothies, on the other hand, are entirely synthetic. Visiting from out of town. Came to this place in hopes of using their WiFi. I got their brownie and the Oink burrito. The brownie was good, it had nuts on top. But a bit on the dry side. I probably won't get it again. The Oink burrito was good and very filling. I couldn't finish the whole thing. It came with salsa which added a nice flavor. As for the WiFi, I was really disappointed with how slow it was. I was sitting inside and didn't even get full bars. You do have to ask the barista for their password. This is the best breakfast in West Yellowstone. The biscuits are the size of your hand and are moist, buttery, and delicious. I got them with the sausage gravy and nan, it was delicious! The omelette s are perfectly cooked and not short on whatever you choose to put in them. Will definitely go back! read more
