Classic independent bookstore and we need a bunch more of them. The shop is quite large despite being only as wide as the storefont, packed with shelves of new books, paper, greeting cards, pens and more. A pleasant browse, and some interesting titles for sure! Book Nation, Let's ride! After a long, short, or medium day of hiking, it's always nice to hit up the ole Bookstore Plus to grab a new book. They have what seems to be an endless supply of book marks which is kind. Every times I've gotten a book they've hooked me up with on me of the free book marks. Standard bookstore for a tourist location. Really easy to find what you're looking for with the sections labeled very clearly and then sorted alphabetically by author. Since this is in a vacation destination, you'll mostly find things that are popular currently and should expect to pay top dollar. I do generally prefer a more varied selection and to peruse through used books, that's not what you're getting here, but if you are looking for a specific book to enjoy while you relax in the mountains you'll almost certainly get what you want. I came in looking for one specific book, walked out with three. No regrets. read more

I am visiting Lake Placid from out of town, but this store makes me wish I lived here - it felt like it was perfectly curated for my browsing! Lots of fiction and nonfiction books in a popular selection throughout the store; a nice little games section for those looking for some chill entertainment; greeting cards and a variety of gifts; and a surprisingly legit art supply section. All in all, really impressed with the variety throughout the store and the good taste and quality of all of the items - no kitschy touristy stuff to be found here. In particular I was pleased that there were lots of little recommendation cards throughout the book sections - a much greater number than you would find at a Barnes and Noble, for sure, and thoughtfully filled out. Come! Find your next favorite book! Or a pretty deck of tarot cards! Or a gift for your funky cousin. Whatever. Just come, you won't be disappointed. read more

Their sign perfectly tells you what is available. I got a few journals and 2 art projects for my kids while visiting Lake Placid. The cashier did make a mistake ringing me up. The transaction didn't go through and she rang me up a second time. She didn't immediately offer me the receipt and void receipt of the first transaction (remember my card and the transaction was completed). I had to ask for these receipts which is the reason why I am rating this store a 4/5. My Achilles heel is journals and stationary. Definitely come check out this store if you like these things. read more

This is a nice little bookstore in a bustling location that feels like a library because it's super quiet and they have a sign outside that asks you to take phone calls outside. It's very small and there is only street parking. They have lots of children's books, best sellers and gift items like notebooks. They also sell scraps of cardstock/construction board for prices like 75 cents. The woman at the counter was nice and greeted us when we walked into the store. I didn't like that the bookstore felt like a library and I needed to whisper inside. It felt very serious and less fun. read more

We were waiting for a table to open up at Smoke Signals and decided to check this place out. I am surprised it doesn't have that many reviews. Went there with my daughter, the kids section is nice with a little tent for the kids to hang out in. Great variety and staff was friendly. Also they don't have a credit card minimum because the book I purchased was under $10. I live out of state and unfortunately the local bookstore in my town didn't survive so our family always makes an effort to support local bookstores when we travel. Great little bookstore, the pack it full of all sorts of options and something for everyone! We weren't smart enough to pack some books for our little guy, so we swung in and found some really good stuff. We focused on children's books which were nicely divided by age groups and reading levels but overall, a very nice place. Staff was helpful, and friendly. A little pricey but convenient and just a nice place! Bottom line: check them out! read more

I'm very glad to see a bookstore in Lake Placid, though I must admit if I lived locally, I would probably spend more time in their beautiful library. Don't let the store's narrow front fool you, once you enter, you will see it goes back quite a long way. The "plus" is primarily a variety of arts-related supplies, a nice compliment to the literature. The magazine selection is not too large, but that probably makes sense, since you can also read or buy magazines at the library or the grocery/drug stores - focus on what's unique and that's the books and art. When I was in the store, I also saw a lot of kids looking around at the books - any time you can get kids in a bookstore is a definite plus! read more

The staff was extremely rude when we walked in. A female worker went to spray sanitizer in my sons hand and missed and instead sprayed sanitizer in my baby's face and walked away. When I said something a male worker said "sorry" in a really sarcastic tone. At this point I expressed to the man I would not spend any money in this establishment due to the staff being so rude, he shrugged his shoulders and opened the door for us to walk out. I cannot believe how they treated us. read more

I walked in just to check things out as I love bookstores. We were immediately greeted and they offered my pup a a treat and some water. We saw they sold cards against humanity and I could have ordered it on amazon to avoid carrying it around town but the staff was so nice I wanted to make sure I supported them! Those visiting Lake Placid should make a stop here. This is a really cool place to stop for a serious reader. I love going to locally owned bookshops. While they obviously didn't have the selection of a mammoth shop, the selections were really great. I found some really wonderful local books as well. The Bookstore Plus is by far the best book store I have ever been too! I live in Long Island and went up to Lake Placid to visit, and while I was up here I visited this book store. They had a lot of variety and so many books that looked interesting, and finally I picked out the book "Red Queen" and when I got back home I realized they forgot to pack it (my mom bought a book too that's why I didn't notice the bag being lighter). So I called and asked if they could mail it to me and not only did they mail me the book, they sent me two books for free (which they nicely wrapped) and included a cute little card. It was definitely a surprise when I opened the box and expected only my one book. I really couldn't have been happier with the way the staff handled the situation and I will definitely going back the next time I'm in Lake Placid. read more

We frequently visit Lake Placid, it's our favorite place in all seasons. My daughter and I walked into this book store, for many years I passed it by thinking it was rather dull, well, much to my surprise and delight, it is a wonderful store. We spent about an hour in there. The staff is so warm and friendly, they truly care about what you are looking for. They took great care and time in helping me find the book I was looking for. The smell of the store is wonderful, and the very unique items they have are awesome. My daughter purchased several adult coloring books along with markers and other supplies. I had a wonderful and memorable experience. They were giving the book away titled, "Wonder". I asked why it was free, they said, they want to spread the message of love, kindness and caring to others. WOW, it doesn't get any better than that.
