This store attracts book lovers, so I had a wonderful conversation about horror novels with one of the patrons. I then had another wonderful conversation about romance novels with the cashier. I try to stop in the Crow Bookshop on every visit to Burlington, so it's odd that I see I hadn't reviewed it. It's an excellent shop, friendly staff, good albeit not hugely extensive number of books in stock, with reasonable prices on the used and remaindered books. This is not just a used book bookstore, it bears emphasizing - they stock new, along with remaindered and used books. The used books are at most "gently" used, so you'll find everything in very good or better condition, and priced accordingly. They accept special orders. I almost always find something of great interest, even though my book buying is very selective these days. read more

A VERY sweet bookstore, where a friend surprised me with the gift of "Crying in H Mart"! Different sections are clear and well set out. Also, lots and lots of used books at excellent prices! There was no real place to hang and check out the books (covid) which kind of stunk, but I certainly understand. Honestly, we felt baited and switched with the many glowing reviews. In our college town of ten thousand fewer people than Burlington, we have several bookstores with a much broader and larger selection. This is widely touted as a "used" bookstore, and we know what that's supposed to look like: actual used books, priced to match. Crow's actual selection of used books is very small; most of the books here are new or close to, and with sticker shock comparable to a big city Barnes and Noble. It isn't a BAD bookstore, but we were expecting far better and far more cost conscious. Is it just that Vermont isn't a great place for bookstores? read more

Obsessed with this place still! The convenient location on Church Street is fabulous, and even though the square footage is relatively small they definitely make the most of it & you could still spend hours in here shopping. Prices for their used books are also very reasonable; that was mostly what I picked up this trip. For some reason, I love to shop for books even more when travelling than I do at home; so I was thrilled to find Crow, which is practically the perfect indie bookstore. They sell new books but also many used books, most of them very gently used and very reasonably priced. I saw some familiar titles but over the course of half an hour's perusal, this shop revealed a knack for exposing me to works, authors, and topics that otherwise would never have been on my radar. I walked out with a few volumes, including a collection of essays which doesn't fit anywhere on my shelf but which I felt was an impeccable purchase for me. Isn't that awesome? read more

The Crow is another fab fixture of a wander on Church St. Their used book selection is great and in awesome shape. There are some great rare finds there. I can spend an hour or so sitting on the hardwood floors paging through old books. They are pretty fair about buying books. They can be sticklers about spine condition and page corners, but that translates to quality selection for purchasers. I have always sold at least 50% of what I bring to them. I've been very satisfied from both purchaser and seller perspectives. read more

I was in here with a 5-year-old browsing the children's section. I had a nice little stack of books to purchase when the 5-year-old starting doing the pee-pee dance. I politely asked the clerk to use the bathroom and she told me they didn't have one. I asked where she went when the time came and she informed me in the private bathroom. I asked if the child could use that and she flatly and very smugly said no. Fuck you. I get you don't want the general public traipsing in and out of your bathroom but use some common sense when it comes to making exceptions. She went on to explain that the nearest bathroom was five blocks away and it would take me five minutes to reach it. Again. Fuck you. That's not even true let alone what a decent person would do. I went next door and the staff there was extremely polite and understanding of the little girl's dilemma and let her slip in and out of the bathroom. It took her less than a minute. We weren't even potential customers, at least on that particular day. I left my stack of books and don't see any reason to go back. No bookstore is that special to deal with that level of pompous scorn from a snot-nosed employee. read more

Downtown Burlington reminds me of my beloved Ithaca, NY where I went to college, and this used bookstore situated on a car-free street is no exception. Crow is filled to the brim with unique gems across all genres. I found some adorable books called French for Cats and Advanced French for Exceptional Cats as well as a recent novel called "Solos" that contains all of my interests packed between two covers--Brooklyn, language, Scrabble, pets, and a page-turning plot. These were quite serendipitous finds that I would be unlikely to encounter anywhere else, and that's what I love about independent bookstores. Because the cat section proved so dangerous to me, I didn't fully peruse the literature section. Still, an armful of books from here totaled about the price of one new book from the sterile Borders. The staff here was also extremely friendly and helpful. read more

Full disclosure: I worked here years ago. Regardless, I've worked at a bunch of bookstores (indie and not) and this is still my favorite one. Why? Well, it now offers used, remaindered and NEW books. It has outlasted all the other downtown Burlington bookshops (Borders included) due to an impressive selection in a cozy atmosphere, attentive customer service and an obvious love of the printed word. It's a great escape from the cold if you're wandering upper Church Street during the long winter months and is a welcomed respite from all the bland chains and high-end boutiques that seem to be taking over the formerly more eclectic pedestrian mall. It's rumored there may be another bookstore opening up on nearby Cherry Street, but I can't imagine it could serve the community any better than the Crow Bookshop has for the past 16 years. Found my beloved copy of JRR Tolkien's "Smith of Wootton Major and Farmer Giles of Ham" here. That being said, well, it's a used bookshop. Kind of a nice example of them in that there's plenty of natural light from the storefront windows, and the layout isn't a twisted maze of nightmares and mysterious gnome-sized doors in the walls. But a pretty typical used bookstore nonetheless. read more

A tiny bookstore filled with gems! Sugar Bear and I walked out with 3 interesting books. My two were about eating locally. His book was about the Civil War Battle in St. Albans, Vermont. Neither of us were aware that a Civil War Battle had taken place that far north until our visit to Vermont. We were unable to fit St. Albans into our agenda this round which really disappointed SB. He was delighted to find this book and read all about this Battle. Someone should make a movie! I digress...this is a wonderful shop and I highly recommend it! read more

Some of the best buys I have ever found! The place smells weird (the books don't) and the floors make a scary creaking sound, and it takes a bit to find a great deal. Don't go looking for new books, but they can help you with your needs, unlike the monster store down the street (don't waste your time with B&N, unless you like magazines) The Crow has a great selection of used kids and "adult comics" no not what you think. What a find! My friend and I stumbled upon this place while perusing Church Street (like every smart person should), and I am so glad we decided to go in! I have not ventured into many independent book stores (it's my new life goal to visit more, though) but this must be one of the best book stores I've ever visited. They have a fabulously curated selection of books - best sellers, local Vermont authors, history, non-fiction, cookbooks... you name it. I saw several books that I've read with my book club and they have excellent taste in books. I wished I lived closer because I would visit regularly. Nice shop in an ultra touristy town. Used books at fair prices. No one bothers if you want to read a few pages...quiet and clean inside. Found some cheap travel guide books and some fiction as well. Stop in and grabs something to read on your road trip or for sitting down by the water. read more
