Interesting to read mixed reviews .. I liked it ok! Nothing fancy but when on a tour and pressed for time , it's important that food is filling and fast . The sandwich was plain toast with fillings and nothing to write home about . However, the salmon and cream cheese, and I added cucumber was excellent .... and so was their soup of the day! Ewww. Ok...I ordered the prawn cocktail for an appetizer and then the prawn sandwich for a meal. First off...prawns are suppose to be bigger than shrimp, right? They were the tiniest shrimp I've ever seen In my life. The shrimp cocktail was just tiny shrimp rolled around in what I think was mayonnaise and catsup. Then...my sandwich was literally the same mayonnaise tiny shrimp served on a submarine/hamburger bun. Gag. So disappointed. Maybe call it a "tiny salad shrimp concoction" instead of a prawn cocktail. Best pub choice while looking for Nessy! Let's face it; searching for a prehistoric monster can be thirsty work. Best pop in here for Vodka & Lemonade, or a beer - to fuel your respite. My Scottish Smoked Fish Chowder appetizer was beyond excellent. Served w bread, a hearty feast, I hope to enjoy it again! My venison burger, and my wife's chicken burger were both excellent. Both were also served on the traditional hinged 'British' bun. It is actually easier to eat a burger on a hinged bun; good on them for this feature! The Bothy is of the only eateries open in Fort Augustus in the off season. Because of their proximity to Loch Ness, I'd be willing to assume tourists are their main income source. I say that mostly because my Rabbies tour group basically filled up their dining area on one November day. It appeared some locals were seated at the bar as well. I was a solo traveler but they didn't blink twice when I asked for a table. In fact, my food came out faster than other tables of groups and service was friendlier. I appreciated that. Their menu is pretty basic and we were on a time limit so I ordered the bacon toast. It was literally bacon with toast and a side salad. Cheap, filling, and good enough for a quick bite. I had plenty of time after lunch to explore the lake area while other folks on the tour completed their "monster" cruise. read more

We were at 'The Bothy' about 4 weeks ago. Our group of (4) stopped in for a late lunch/early dinner. Weird vibe, Waitress was catty, talking smack after she walked away. Why?.. because we asked a few questions about the food & drink selections. Then her and the other waitress just stood over by their work station with arms folded staring out at the patrons with a look of disdain on their faces. Weirdest thing. She didn't come over to the table after serving the food to ask how everything is or if we needed anything else or would like some water, etc. The food was ok. Wish that I would have read some of the reviews before going here. I can say that literally everywhere else we went in Scotland, the people were extremely friendly and courteous. read more

If I could give them a no star, I would. We tried to go yesterday and the lady rudely told us they were closed For afternoon break. We popped in today for lunch, not many people eating there. The wait staff were coughing frequently and we were concerned about Covid. I ordered the smoked salmon and perhaps I misunderstood the meaning of smoked. It was more of the raw variety. My husband ordered the same thing and when he went to put pepper on his salad, the top had not been screwed on and pepper dumped all over his salmon. He made the waitress aware when she came to collect our dishes, and she shrugged and walked away. they did not make any attempt to apologize or to make things right. I would rate this a 3.5 not a 4.0. The view from the restaurant was pleasant, in fact the town is located only 1-1/2 miles away from the Loch Ness or ness lake and its visible. No we did not see any large creature come out of the lake and spawn! Lol. You can get 2 dinner meals and 2 pints of house beer for about 24 sterling pounds. Accepts credit cards visa as well as cash. Not bad considering this was one of a few eateries open at 8pm. I ordered the 1 haggis special with a pint of guinness as an appetizer and as the main course the fresh caught salmon with steamed vegetables and chips (aka what Americans call Steak fried fries) with a pint of calcedodian beer. The fish was the ultimate bomb, not buttery or too fishy. What you dream a salmon should taste: slightly salty with a hint of the sea. The Haggis was very strong on the liver and brains flavor, a little bit of grains with a pinch of salt. I added some ketchup to reduce this "gamey" essence. All the food tasted fine, and the bar as well as the pool table room was crowded and busy. I just wished the staff could be more organized and smile more often. The high school student/young male server was very helpful in showing us the location of the "famous pathway that tourists walk on the reach Inverness". By the way, he told me the locals are "too busy" to take on this 4-3 days challenge from Fort augustus to Inverness...if you ask me they are just smart not like us tourist on holiday! :-) read more

Perfectly adequate spot in the center of Fort Augustus. The menu is certainly capable of pleasing anyone from young to old and in between! I'm not sure how this place had pretty decent reviews, my experience here was terrible. We ordered the fish and chips and the smokey chicken. The fish and chips was literally 80% batter and 20% fish. It was super greasy and crunchy and overall awful. Also, the only tarter sauce and ketchup they had was in little packets. How can a restaurant "specializing" in fish and chips not have good tarter sauce and ketchup in a bottle? The smokey chicken was not as bad as the fish and chips, but it was still pretty bad. It had a gross aftertaste and was not a very big portion. Both dishes came with tasteless, overcooked vegetables that looked and tasted worse than the vegetables in a microwave TV dinner. If you plan on getting lunch in this town, dont go to The Bothy. You can get better food in the grocery store down the street. read more

We had the steak pie and smokey chicken. Steak pie was as excellent and savory as anywhere else in the UK, served with steamed, but still crispy veggies. Smokey chicken was delicious, plenty of melted cheese and bacon, and a nice piece of chicken. Reminded me of Malibu chicken back in the US, with a bit more smoke to it. Racist service from a sub-par establishment. We were outright ignored from the start by the waitresses in the restaurant. At one point, we ordered coffee and the waitress literally stared at us and walked away. The tipping point came when our coffees finally arrived and the gentlemen with tattoos on his arm (one of the waiters) snapped at us as we were asking for creamer for our coffee. As we left in disappointment, we could see that the other non-white families in the restaurant looked equally irate. We found the hostess inept when she looked to serve some more bossy Americans before my family (although we were clearly first). The waitstaff was rude and completely unaccommodating with some of my mother's food allergies and served with a gruffness that was simply dismissive rather than "highland charming." And after all that the food was only so so. My brother and I both got a variation of the smoked salmon and Mom ordered the venison burger. Came across this place while we were waiting for our lochness tour. It is a quaint restaurant right by the water with a variety of traditional food to choose from like fish and chips and haggis. Stopped in here on our trip to see Nessy. The stones of this building were showing on the walls and the beams holding the roof seem like they have been here for centuries. Such a great feeling with the crackle of the logs in the fireplace located accross from the bar. I had a could pint and some haggis. It was a true experience for Scottland highlands. You could see the dark waters of Loch Ness ripple as the rain hit the surface from our table. The view alone was worth the trip. The Service was spot on and prompt. The prices for things here in this town were average for Scottland, which isn't expected for a tourist trap town (in the US at least). I really wish I could have spent more time in this town but our tour guide was on a schedule. The neat part about this was finding the restrooms that were located up 4 flights of stairs and down the hall. They did take credit cards which is a huge plus for a traveler. The only thing that disappointed me was that i didn't actually see Nessy. Believe me I freakin looked. Even walked around to the very spot that guy claimed to have seen it in the blurry photo. Appalling - Avoid at all cost. This restuarant is positively appalling for food. I've never before sent something back to the kitchen but had to during my visit. The waitress didn't even blink at the request. I'm guessing it happens with some frequency. I made the mistake of ordering the "Homemade Apple Crumble". I assumed (incorrectly) that the "homemade" moniker meant it would be halfway decent. When it arrived I had some bizarrely stewed apple mush at the bottom of a bowl, topped with a still mostly frozen block of shortbread and a freezer burned scoop of ice cream. I attempted to eat a bite or two and it was one of the most disgusting dishes I've ever tasted. Dinner itself was of questionable quality but edible at least. Where we were sat we could hear all the clanging within the kitchen along with their horrible taste in music. Bathrooms were in a disgusting state (and mostly without toilet paper), and the staff lacked any enthusiasm for their job (couldn't blame them). read more

decidedly racist, uninterested and indifferent service. they were recommended to us as one of the better lunch options by our Rabbies Tours drivers/guide at the midday stop at Fort Augustus. very disappointed to have met with an overtly boorish waitress - a very very sad experience. to top it, the food is over priced.
