I almost never leave 1 star reviews but this place earned it. First, the service was so incredibly rude. Sophia was just plain awful and honestly abusive with her mind games. I joined my family after parking the car who all warned me that the server was not even remotely friendly. They weren't kidding. She was awful, just plain rude and should not be in hospitality. She was aggressive, moody, unpredictable. It was like an old ex who played mind games just to be mean. She honestly was that bad. How is she working at this place? Upon sitting down, she told me we had only 2 hours at the table so I better order immediately. I asked if they had wifi, and she said yes. Then immediately walked away from me. Umm... Really??? The table next to us tried to flag down the same server and she yelled at them. At least, we weren't them! We actually bonded over the trauma of this woman since we weren't the only ones. I quickly ordered the halibut for my main course. I have to say, it was the worst meal I've had in a very long time. It was not only dry but completely lacked flavor. My kids also disliked their food. My daughter's mashed potatoes tasted like it was from the box. She didn't even touch them (and typically cleans her plate). And my son didn't eat half of his pizza. I tried it. And have to agree, it was really bad. No flavor. Finally my partner ordered the steak medium rare. It came out charred, burned and fatty. The meal was honestly awful. The service was even worse. I booked this meal months ago. We all laughed since it felt like one of those meals you're abused and you're all in on the gag. Except that wasn't the case here. Just rude service and terrible food. My kids ordered the brownie sundae for dessert. Surely, that couldn't be bad? Wrong. The brownies were dry and stale. But the kids at least enjoyed the ice cream. Overall, this was probably the worst dining experience I've had probably in years. It was definitely the worst meal and service in Scotland. I was shocked at just how bad the food was. How rude the service was and how expensive it was. The one upside is the restaurant space is beautiful. I rarely, almost never, give 1 star reviews. As an elite all star, I pride myself on trying to see the positive especially for small businesses. And focus on the positive. But I'm not going to promote a place that is truly not good, rips off the consumer and is rude. If it's not clear by this point. My recommendation? Run from this place! read more

This food was really quite good although a little pricey for what you get. The bread bowl that came out before our entree was delicious! I could not get enough of the bread and butter on this trip. It was warm and flaky bread and worth every carb! My main entree of chicken curry was mild but flavorful. The portion was small. It came with a side of naan that was okay I was hoping for a little bit of spice but to no avail. The building is beautiful. The vibe is solid. The staff was a little bit indifferent to us. Nice. But also somewhat disappointing. After reading the rave reviews we chose to come here for dinner. It's a big and very busy restaurant, with two levels of tables. We were taken to our table upstairs, frankly it was warm and a bit uncomfortable. Our server was a charming man, who unfortunately for him was working along on his first day. The restaurant was short staffed and they assisted him very well. He apologized multiple times. The goat cheese salad starter was reasonably good, certainly not great. My wife selected the halibut special that was frankly too salty. My choice of the monkfish was much better. On the recommendation of the people at the next table, I ordered the cheese board dessert. This was an excellent lunch stop for us in the town of Inverness.  We picked this place partially because it was a recommendation by renowned travel writer Rick Steves back in 2014.  It is also located conveniently in the heart of the commercial district and right alongside the Ness River.  Our friendly and engaging hostess/manager was Alina, a 17 year veteran.  They have a cozy and attractive 2 story high ceilinged setting and we sat on the 2nd floor.  The lunch menu was a variety of high quality 2 course selections for a very reasonable 18.95 GBP.  Our party of 4 had a delicious and beautifully presented lunch.  For the mains, I had their traditional fish pie and wife had their filet of seabass.  Our travel mates had the rump steak and red pesto gnocchi.  It got busy and the kitchen might have gotten backed up and it took a little while on the food, but we enjoyed hanging out here.  Service was otherwise friendly and attentive.  Highly recommended should you find yourselves in the lovely town of Inverness. read more

We booked a table at Mustard Seed based on its reputation, which was strong with local foodies. I mention this in the event that unfavorably influenced our perception of our experience, which was not the five-star dinner that we were anticipating. We arrived on time to a nearly empty restaurant (weekday evening, post rush hour, one other table wrapping up on the ground level as we arrived, a couple more on the upper level), and had to wait for our reserved table, which ended up being by the front door on a cold and rainy evening (aka normal Scottish weather for November). It was unclear what was slowing service down, but the wait to order cocktails was surprisingly long. Our drinks were made promptly and well. We began to place our meal order when the server excused themselves while in the process to take a drink order from the table that had arrived several minutes after we were seated (with the entirety of the lower level of the restaurant available, this boisterous table of four was set right next to us. Fortunately we hadn't been planning a quiet, romantic dinner...). In fairness to our server, there may have only been one other person working tables that night, but not great form even so. We eventually got our order placed. A breadbasket was brought out (three slices of bread for the two of us). Our food arrived in OK time and was itself OK, having seemed to have sat in the pass a little long for some reason. All this said, the menu looked solid, and while the entrees weren't especially memorable this visit, their cocktail options were good (we enjoyed the Highlanders Negroni made with Badachro Coastal gin) and desert options (a proper Mixed Berry Eton Mess). An additional positive note: my wife lost a ring in the restaurant during our visit and the bartender, quickly seeing that we were in distress, joined our search for it. I'm confident we would have given up on finding it were it not for his effort, so again, cheers to you, sir. This was above and beyond, and what I think probably passes for the standard of care that many experience dining here. So a mixed bag for us. I don't think this represents a typical dining experience here. Mustard Seed is well-thought of locally (there is a small, discreet shelf of awards tucked away around a corner), and if we should find ourselves back in Inverness looking for a dinner spot we wouldn't rule out Mustard Seed out of hand. The food was good but didn't stand out with the exception of the hoisin duck bon bons. It's absolutely amazing, served with a mango sauce. I would highly recommend even if you don't like duck. First day in Inverness and we found this restaurant. We were able to get in as someone cancelled. We got the early dinner menu for under 20 pounds for 2 courses. We got the mackerel and salmon pate and Gorgonzola bruschetta. Bruschetta was a bit bready but the pate was very good. For the entree we got the steak and sea bass. Both were good and decent portions for the price. It was a bit quiet as we were early but it did get a bit noisy when larger groups arrived. read more

Had a nice lunch here on our last day in Inverness. It's a really nice restaurant in a great location right on the River Ness, so offers great views. Also, we were seated upstairs which gives better views of both the river and the overall restaurant and bar. For food, my wife and I both got the two course meal, so I had the Deconstructed Prawn Cocktail and Fillet of Seabass. The prawns were good and the seabass (and couscous that came with it) was really good. They do a really good job on food presentation here, so it looked great, too. My wife had the Breaded French Brie, which she loved, and Red Pesto Gnocchi, which she said was just ok. Servers were friendly and attentive. The one odd thing that happened was we were presented with the two course menu option, whereas all tables seated after us were presented with a large specials placard which had some dishes I might have ordered. I noticed the one other couple seated before us also looking at the list of specials, so they weren't offered it either. Might have been because we were seated so early - not really sure. Quality of the food, we had Halibut and it was mushy and dry. We were told mushy is normal. We disagree.

I tried to pop in here for dinner, thinking that as a solo diner I could sit at the bar, but upon arrival I found out that a reservation is a must and there is no bar seating. So, when I saw an open reservation for lunch the next day I grabbed it. My reservation was for 12pm, when the restaurant opened. Surprisingly when I arrived there were already a lot of tables filled. I was seated on the upper level at a 2 top near the windows. While other reviews have mentioned that service was slow, my service was fine. Perhaps because they had just opened but my waitress was attentive throughout the 2 course meal. She was a bit difficult to find when I was ready to pay but all in all not bad. For lunch, for £15.95, you can get 2 courses (Starter & Main). I chose the Pickled rollmop Herring starter and Pan seared fillet of Scrabster Hake main. The herring starter was super bright, acidic, and light. A great way to wake up my palette and appetite. The hake main was good as well. Perhaps a bit more bland then the herring but a nice piece of fish. The mashed potatoes that the main came with were a bit dry and starchy for my taste but that could just be me. Obviously I couldn't pass up an opportunity to grab a drink so I started with the local Kinrara gin £5.30 - delicious! Light, floral, and fruity. Then I went for a large pour of the white False wine from South Africa £9 - perfect with the fish. Crisp, citrus, clean. If you're looking for a nicer sit down experience in Inverness this is a good option. Be sure to get a reservation and book early. read more

I ordered the creamy porcini mushroom risotto and it was probably the best mushroom risotto I ever had and I've been to Italy and had some insane truffle risotto there. The truffle flavour is quite strong, but even my brother and dad who dislike truffle enjoyed it. The mushrooms had a great texture that contrasted the risotto and the portion was perfect. Just arrived as a North American traveller. Saw their profile online and booked a reso well in advance. Great location on the water, nice building and interior. Warmer than average weather, and they had their patio doors open to keep it nice and cool inside. Specials were excellent and we ordered a lemon sole (£27) as well as the tortellini (£22). Ordered the halloumi fries (£10) to share as an appetizer. Ordered a bottle of wine (which they didn't have, so went with a solid second choice at a decent price (£30) Shared a dark chocolate caramel tart (£9) with ice cream that was wonderful. Tasty all around and would recommend the food all day long. Cons: busy night, so slow service - 15 minutes after being sat, we finally had service, placed all food and Bev orders as well as water. Appetizer arrived before the water and wine. Not that it's necessary, but no one checked in other than to deliver the food. Wine, dessert, tea, water done, no sign of service, had to ask after 30 minutes of waiting to get the cheque, which unlike many of the places we have been here in UK had a tip option (but no ingrained service charge) Food 5 stars, service 2 stars. Very fun and good restaurant to visit. Started with wonderful service, as our waitress was on top of everything but also quite pleasant. I had the mussels as a starter, large portion with a nice cream broth (and our efficient waitress brought extra bread without having to ask). Followed by the surf and turf, which was unique in that the turf was venison. The langoustines were great but the venison was over cooked, on the medium well to well side even though ordered medium rare. We thoroughly enjoyed this restaurant. Make a reservation! I cannot emphasize this enough. We stopped by a little after 7:30 on a Sunday and were told the earliest they could seat us was 8:45. We took it, and we were glad we did. This was the best meal we've had in Scotland so far, in that everything was to our liking. Most other places, one of us was raving about the food while the other didn't like it. Here, both my wife and I were pleased. Yelpers talk about the creative cocktails, and they are right. I was particularly impressed by the separate menu of gins, which included a full page of Scottish gins. For starters, my wife got the warm goat cheese with onion chutney. My wife said to me, "Be sure to mention in your review how much I loved it!" I got the seafood sampler for one -- prawns, calamari, pickled mackerel, and cold-smoked salmon, along with some greens. It was just the right amount for a starter, and was also delicious, especially the salmon. For dinner, my wife got the pan-fried salmon with green curry sauce and I had the ribeye with green peppercorn sauce. Also all tasty. My one complaint was that the steak was WAY over-salted. They could have used a quarter of the salt to better effect. We didn't get dessert. The staff was very attentive and the service sharp. read more
