The Lougheed House has so many amazing things going on all the time. I encourage you to take their tour of the Hpuse as it has so much history. I have taken it twice and keep on learning new things all the time. In the summer the Conservation Society does a terrific job setting up and maintaining the gardens. What is an additional bonus is the vegetables and herbs are used in the restaurant.

It is on the same site as the original fort, the present structure is a reconstruction on a 40-acre park. In 1875, it was Fort Brisebois by the North West Mounted Police. Then the fort included men's quarters, a guard room, stables and storage facilities surrounded by a palisade of vertical logs. The setting is a flat parcel of land which slopes gently towards the river & supports several large trees. Official recognition refers to the parcel of land that is approximately 12 hectares surrounding the location of Fort Calgary.

It was so relaxing walking around the different buildings and taking in all the nature. We all enjoyed the train ride and surprisingly, the free amusement rides. We didn't have time for food but it was just so peaceful, we left feeling rejuvenated. Plenty of parking and everyone we crossed paths with was so kind and told us so much about Heritage Park.

And it was fun. We rode the train, rode in the wagon pulled by a tractor, went into houses, learned at the print shop and the oil well, and interacted with the actors. And of course we started at Gasoline Alley. Gasoline Alley has plenty of cars, but I was fascinated by the collection of work trucks and gasoline pumps. And there were plenty of volunteers there to explain the exhibited vehicles and ancillary items. We are an excellent lunch in the cafe.

All the staff are helpful and very welcoming and the entrance is just beautiful- outside and inside! The plaza leading up to the entrance is lovely - lots of art and character. And when you enter, be sure to look up and appreciate the beautiful dome interior! There's so many intricate details. Also there are some small exhibits located around the halls on the upper floors before you go into the museum so don't miss those - very cool! The museum downstairs is the real star of the show - we were so impressed! They have lots of exhibits and interesting replicas. I really enjoyed the large replica exhibit of the terracotta soldiers - I had no idea how huge they actually are! And of the antique seismograph for measuring earthquake activity - that was really cool. They have a very detailed exhibit on the development of Calgary's Chinese community spanning over 100 years that was so fascinating. We had no idea about any of that history and are so glad we stopped in. They had lots of early artifacts and stories and many other interesting pieces, including a small wall of photographs of Calgary's Chinatown throughout its history - which was a fantastic way to start our morning exploring the area. Calgary has a surprisingly large Chinatown and if you're at all interested in Chinese culture, I highly recommend starting here and then be sure to explore the town itself. Lots to see! Oh and there's a decent bathroom up on the second floor too!

Checked out the Cultural Centre during recent Calgary visit -…read more Unfortunately, hoped it would take up more time, however was in and out within 20 minutes. There were empty displays - and honestly not much to see , maybe not the ideal time of year? - but it's okay it was free. The staff noticed us but never approached us or anything - so this is a pretty dull experience. - However, good for the introvert that just wants to walk around and read.
