To say that its scene and crowd are consistent is somewhat misleading, as it attracts a wide array of people who unite most readily for their contrariness and less for their style or their adherence to any particular scene or movement, a feature that makes this place refreshingly un-London. There is, however, a definite punk edge, evinced by the Barcelona pin-faces who pile onto the side patio for cigarettes any time of year, and the general sway of the musical acts booked in most nights (expect to pay a small cover if you arrive after eight). Drinks are somewhat on the expensive side, but long waits at the bar are virtually unheard of, saved by staff that may seem surly but are rather delightfully low-key. Non-locals need not be put off by night transit: both Commercial Road and Whitechapel High Street are surprisingly well-served by the system. All in all a reliable place to grab a drink and feel both at home and away at once.

Inside you'll find a warm and vibrant atmosphere populated by a young and uber-trendy crowd. Comfortable leather sofa are dotted about and there's an outdoor seating area in which to relax with a pint. I heard a rumour that Kate Moss used to frequent this place, but don't let that put you off, the George stocks an excellent range of beers, ales and spirits and regualrly plays host to local bands and DJs. With a late license that takes you through to the wee hours I'm thankful I live close to this excellent party pub.

ain't nothing but a late night out in soho…read more... ain't nothing but a side street that also houses dishoom, clearly a distraction for anyone hungry. ain't nothing but an overflowing crowd being told outdoors drinking ceases after 10pm? ain't nothing but a one in, one out queuing system, so just stand patiently in line for entry. ain't nothing but relief from the outdoors elements in exchange for a sardines packed indoors on a monday night because there's no cover charge? ain't nothing but jostling for precious real estate as you inch yourself towards the bar to quench your thirst. ain't nothing but cashless transactions, even a cashless tipping machine, just tap and go! ain't nothing but a beer in one hand and a cup of nuts in the other, still inching ever so slowly towards the stage. ain't nothing but non stop live music and a boisterous appreciative crowd making room to groove along. ain't nothing but a long wait to poach one of a handful of tables to sit and soak in the ambience, freeing up your hands to clap! ain't nothing but enthusiastic jamming sets right up till 12.45am. ain't nothing but a good late night out in soho!

The surfers paradise frozen cocktail, laden with passion fruit, mango, and pineapple, made me feel like I'd been transported to the islands. Didn't try the food here but the menu looked like standard pub fare, nothing gastro about it. Beer pong table was put away around 8pm to make room for the slowly infiltrating dance party ready crowds. All Bar One next door seemed to be more populated in comparison. Don't know what was going on because (based on my friends commentary, not from experience), the place is usually packed by this hour. Maybe just an off night or maybe everyone was busy watching the bonfire weekend fireworks display. Bartenders were free pouring it up, which is a welcome change from the precise measuring they're all about in this country. My bartender opted to go hard with the theatrical aspect of bartending, including plenty of cheesy jokes and fun glasses in the air moves. They brought us over a round of free shots to end the night, which was a nice gesture, but not an overly generous one given our group had cumulatively ordered at least 30 drinks. Cell signal and wifi signal were both weak, which was a slight annoyance. Decent mix of new and old tunes, but they definitely had their playlist on repeat. After hearing every song about 3 times over, we called it a night and headed out.

This is one of my favourite London pubs. It has so much character it's almost selfish. The owner…read morehas collected all sorts of bits and bobs over the years - from a life-size Sinatra cut-out to a surfboard and stuffed ferret - and crammed them into the pub - on the walls, hanging from the ceiling, in every available space. You may even find yourself sitting at a table that doubles up as an old-school sewing machine! You'll be entertained merely from gazing at the mesmerising array of curiosities - I notice something new on every visit. Added to that it's a wonderfully cosy, comfortable place with a real local feel despite its prime location. It's a wonder to me that it doesn't get over-run with the Clapham crowd - perhaps it's too "out-there" for that. Either way I'm not complaining, I love the POW POW POW (as it's neon sign proclaims) exactly as it is, although I must say Christmastime is best there - even more decorations! And I must mention the pizza: this is a new addition to the pub and used to be the menu at the Rose and Crown across the road. One of the bartenders was kind enough to keep running us water, and the bar was full service: not something I'd ever expect, espescially in London. The 12 percent service fee is more than fair, though the cocktail prices run a bit too high to be justified by even the quirky decorations. Definitely a good place to visit once or twice, solo or with a mate.

There are quirky signs around you and little nooks to hide away in. The bartender we had was so knowledgeable and didn't mind us asking a million different questions about the drinks, the bar and the little bottles on the counter. There is a standard menu but you can always ask for something different and the end result is tantalisingly good. Worth it. I promise.

The pub is a bit dirty, with ugly carpet and sticky tables. Really could do with a nice new lick of paint. Out the back is a pool table and a stage. Definitely a strange vibe here, as upstairs is a hostel so you find many many different types of people coming in and out, but hardly any stay for more than one drink. The strangeness and mystique of this place, along with welcoming staff make me want to come back when i'm next near.
